DC Comics character to come out as gay

DC Comics plans to reintroduce a character as gay, comic blog BleedingCool.com reports.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio announced the plans over the weekend at Kapow Comic Convention in London, saying that the existing superhero who was previously assumed to be straight will be "one of our most prominent gay characters." He did not specify in which issue the reveal will occur.

President Barack Obama: Same-sex couples should be able to get married

The news comes a year after DiDio told The Advocate that he only intends to introduce new characters in the DC universe as gay rather than make existing ones gay. Of the change in plans, DC Comics Senior VP Bob Wayne told BleedingCool.com that DiDio's view "has evolved," echoing President Barack Obama's recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

So, basically DC Comics is fixing to write the death knell for the sales of one of their Superheroes.

Mark my words, it doesn’t matter which hero it is, sales numbers will crater.

A homosexual “superhero”. The Fabulous Boa! This should be hilarious. I guess they’ll have to leave off the “SWISH!” when he/she takes off running.

Just one super hero?

Every one of them has that whole spandex tights thing going on, in all kinds of bright colors. Then you’ve got the matching cape, matching mask, and slip-on stain high top shoes.

I’m thinking the whole super hero culture is keeping a secret.

What is it with these people? (Rhetorical Question...)

Comic books were one of my favorite reading pleasures as a young child and man. I read them for the adventure or the eeriness of somewhere far away and different from where I lived and went to school. I didn’t care about a heros or villains sexual orientation nor would it have ever occurred to me to ask.

Now-a-days... These comics are quickly heading for the XXX rated adult store not the local comic book store.

Totally idiotic move taking 'PC' to the level of insanity.

The boys and young men that buy DC 'superhero' comics may be brainwashed by the public schools and the media that being 'gay' is just dandy but as far as I can tell, it's still considered an insult for one teen-age boy to call another (both presumably heterosexual) 'gay'. That indicates the reality is that boys still know that wanting sex with another guy is wrong and probably repulsive to most of them. Thus, adding a 'gay' character to the DC comic stable will likely turn off the majority of that company's prospective consumers. Maybe Obama will bail DC comics out when they crater. Oh, wait, he won't be president by then.

Oh good grief! The comic books are not usually about with whom the characters are having sex. It’s of absolutely no importance to the stories, unless the writer is pushing an agenda, in which case it’s not a comic book, it’s propaganda.

Not necessarily.

Besides, if it is WW, her original impetus behind leaving Paradise Island Themyscira—her having fallen in love with Steve Trevor—will be erased, and she would have no reason to go to Man’s World.

I stopped reading comics when Goldfinger first came out in paperback.

My mild curiosity is whether this "superhero" is going to be on the Gotham Turnpike, servicing a Glory Hole in a rest stop mens room.

I always thought that was the ultimate in the romance of homosexual behavior. Odd that it never gets the publicity it deserves...

Really, who cares about comic book characters? I never understood the interest by anyone over the age of 12. In today’s environment, I doubt anyone UNDER the age of, oh, 40, cares. Collectors and guys in their 40’s who still live in mom’s basement maybe.

Sorry, this silly in and out of the closet/commie/enviro whacko trend that everyone keeps writing about creeping into comic books - what power do they have over anything or anyone that we don’t grant them? If a tree in a forest is cut down to print a comic book, do I give a...., ah, never mind.

I say ditch the dime store comics and read Melville.
