SAN ANTONIO -- Police say a car burglary on the city's northwest side was foiled by an alert homeowner with a gun.
The homeowner was woken around 1:55 a.m. Thursday by two men busting the side window of the Cadillac Escalade parked outside his home in the 6300 block of Stable Farm, San Antonio police said.
One of the suspects allegedly signaled to the homeowner that he had a gun.
However, police said the homeowner really did have a gun and fired a single shot through his bedroom window one of the men attempting to steal the Cadillac.
Both suspects took off on foot.
Police said they don't believe either of the suspects were shot since no blood was found at the scene and they were able to run away.
Police searched for the area by helicopter and with canine units but failed to locate the suspects.

I am just happy I wasn’t on the next street over happily driving down the street and shot dead in my car or in bed across the street and killed by the stray bullet. This is in a residential neighborhood you know.
So what’s *your* solution?

Of course! But why are y’all assuming that the homeowner *wasn’t* acting responsibly? Just because he missed with the one round he fired? Nothing in the article points towards your conclusion.
Most likely the bedroom was on the second floor, which means that missed shots would have hit the asphalt.
Ideally, he should have used a shotgun. More stopping power, less ricochet hazard.
Always shoot into the ground or the target, or use a shotgun. I’m so glad you didn’t get hit by that stray bullet.
Maybe you should be happy he shot...You may have been next on the thieves “shopping list”...From the way you talk, you would’ve just cowered down and let them have whatever....
Well, I'm not assuming that, I'm just generally recommending the defender have options and training for these situations. There was no critique of this particular defender's actions.

The “missed” shot just might have been to scare off the thieves.
I think there is a simple solution to this problem that we can all agree on. That man needs a laser sighting device.
Despite other conditions: dark, obscured, that you are groggy, nervous or upset; that red dot appearing on the belt buckle of your target is just so gosh darned reassuring.

It starts with some teenagers lifting car door handles to see if they can get inside. Eventually it doesn’t payoff and some yahoo decides to try and break the car windows. Time goes by and the criminal gets more brazen, is that back door of the house locked? Eventually, whether door is locked or not, whether people are home or not... there’s a stranger in your house, probably armed, and could care less what happens to you.
It’s a reality that some don’t want to believe can happen.

Thinking of getting one at the Kingman, AZ show in June. Looks like a great anti-carjacker - big bore to intimidate, shot does not go far in the parking lot and take out a passerby - close in, as good a ball.
Come on, it’s not “could care less”, it’s “couldn’t care less”. Think about it, if he could care less, how much less could he care?
Tell you what, it’s a FUN handgun to shoot. I don’t have the least regret about purchasing it.
I enjoy the heck out of shooting it. The variety of loads you can fire out of it is amazing. And it’s great for a certain class of varmints (snakes, rats).
But other than for in-vehicle use, I’d think seriously about something else for personal protection.
Also, be aware that .410 and .45 long colt can be spendy ammo.

Every time I hit a gun show table and talk to the seller about one of these guns, I tell him it’s for a concealed carry for my wife. Always get a deer-in-headlights look, then a laugh.
I like it mainly for the close range intimidation value of the big bore. Have been using a M1911 for the auto but am a little leery of nailing some bystander, so the fine shot I think, is a bit safer.
No carjacking experience and want to keep it that way. It’s a pretty low crime area out my way but then that’s what they usually say, with some wonder, AFTER a crime.

Unless you only want to annoy the perp, don’t even think about anything smaller than #4. Seriously. And personally I wouldn’t defend anyone I love with #4 shot in a Judge.

Someone (Hornady?) makes a .410 defense round tailored for the Judge — it’s got everything and the kitchen sink in it (disks, shot, ...) but it’s pricey and gimmicky IMHO.
More commentary from the troll known as “nougat”. No one said anything about “random gunfire”; carefully aimed gunfire is the issue under discussion. At the distance from my upstairs study to my driveway, I could easily make a headshot with my least accurate handgun. HOWEVER, I would likely select something less sporting and more appropriate for vermin extermination like a shotgun loaded with slugs. Again, at the range we are discussing, my only issue is deciding which eye in which to put the slug.
Regarding your monicker, I work in IT, but I prefer not to consider the brainless dolts controlling the aircraft in which I travel. If I think about it too much, I am likely to refuse business travel and wind up living off the government dole like you.
