Detroit street lights may shrink by half

Detroit street lights may be going dark soon. At least half of them will no longer shine as the city shrinks. The city has 88,000 streetlights and about 40 percent of those are broken, and the city cannot afford to fix them.

Mayor Dave Bing developed a plan to repair and reduce the street lights in Detroit. Unfortunately, the city is facing reduced population, which has reduced its budget for services like street lights.

Under the new plan, the city would only have 46,000, and ultimately they would save $10 million a year once the changes were made. Of course, not everybody is happy about the changes because some areas will literally be left in the dark.

The sad thing is that things have to change. The city cannot afford to continue maintenance and street lights in areas where very few people live. It is hard, but perhaps they can help shrink the city to a more managable area. The big problem is that criminals can operate easier in the dark.

Wonder when they’ll all be off.

The big deal, at least to me, is you have city officials making decisions on who gets city services and who does not.

With black youths roaming the streets at night, a dark street is an open invitation to crime. I don’t have this problem either where I live, but I have seen Detroit neighborhoods at night and it is scary as hell even with streetlights working.

The woman ‘stash’ interview was played on talk radio quite a few times and at one point it was on youtube also. I haven’t heard it in a long time tho.

Detroit streets are perfectly safe at night as long as you go out with a group of friends who are also out for a leisurely late night stroll...

armed to hilt with firearms galore, bullet-resistant vests and several thousand rounds of ammunition.

typical liberal thinking: you can’t afford things as they are, sooooo....
borrow 160mil in order to save 10 mil/year (16 year payback) and claim you’re saving money.
if the folks of detroit are dumb enough to swallow this, then they get what they deserve

Not all Liberal run cities have the ‘Detroilet’ problem, for more see Paul Kersey’s new book, “Escape From Detroit: The Collapse of America’s Black Metropolis”.

“The last one to leave, turn out the lights.”

The city will become even more dangerous to travel through as the “people of night” crawl out from hiding to prey on the unsuspecting .

When I was a kid growing up in Michigan, Detroit was listed as the 4th largest city in the US.

"Escape from New York"

"Escape From Detroit"

Coming soon!

Gosh, it is almost surreal. "Art imitates Life" or "Life imitates Art", I can never remember which is true...

Detroit is now #18 on the list just behind Charlotte, NC according to this Wiki.

I’d rather walk in a Detroit Blackout than many areas of Chicago during the day.

Chicago is a regular old killing zone and wait till the federal dollars are cut off.

“You have to identify those neighborhoods where you want to concentrate your population,” said Chris Brown, Detroit’s chief operating officer. “We’re not going to light distressed areas like we light other areas.”

“Bing in 2010 began an independent project called Detroit Works to sort ideas on how to reconfigure the city for residences, businesses, green space and even agriculture, a plan due in August.”

Detroit Works project is absolutely a sustainable development initiative.

Thanks for the link, but that’s NOT the article that I had read, and need to find. Definitely a keeper, but not the article I am looking for.

The article I am looking for specifically outlined the lighting cutbacks as a means to herd communities of residences into specified urban areas to the liking of master planners, opposed to the necessity to do so generated by cost to a bankrupt city. It wasn’t science fiction either. It was a real plan by real Leftists of the Leftist wannabe ruling class using the Detroit plan as the basis of their own National plan.

Good point to ping TEXOKIE. I had forgotten the necessity to do so. It does fall into the Agenda 21 category of societal manipulation.

Detroit, Newark, St. Louis, Chicago, Baltimore, Gary, Birmingham, Oakland...

No country on earth, outside of full on war (with two exceptions I can think of), has seen this level of decay in major cities. A unique force is at work here.
