Is Liberalism Dead?

Maybe it’s just me, but I find it hard to believe liberals believe in liberalism anymore.

With the obvious global meltdown of Keynesian economics, how could anyone remotely intelligent support the continued deficit spending that is driving the Western World into bankruptcy?

And yet a large proportion of our population still backs Barack Obama for a second term. Yes, some of this is due to the reactionary identity politics the Democratic Party has practiced for so many years and some to the large number of people working for the government and therefore voting their self-interest. Even so, it’s difficult to avoid this conclusion:

Liberalism as an ideology is in its death throes. Only the power trip remains.

An indication of this ideological flimflam is the recent braggadocio from various MSNBC hosts that Obama is really the King of Austerity and has spent less than other presidents. Apparently, this assertion was based on the misleading figures of an economist who lumped nearly a year of Obama’s expenditures under Bush, including at least half the stimulus, but never mind. What you have is MSNBC, of all paleo-liberal outlets, bragging about their man’s lower government spending. Whatever happened to liberalism?

Similarly, and for some time, the Democratic Party is running as far as possible from the Occupy crowd and the relentless demands. Most Democratic leaders know what the majority of the public knows. The Occupyers are retreads from the Summer of Love more likely to be freeloaders or con artists, even rapists, than people with something positive to contribute to society.

Democrats — more of them, I imagine, than will publicly admit it — are recoiling from Obama’s attack on Bain Capital as well, anyone with an IQ in triple-digits knowing private equity firms have more potential to revive our...

100 million people died directly or indirectly due to communism in the 20th century and it’s still around.

Smallpox was supposedly eradicated, too. Then we came to find out that intellectuals and scientists had carefully preserved some.

I still run into people that believe Keynesian economics is the only solution. They believe it to their core. No amount of fact will sway them. Just like their belief in global warming and that Al Gore actually won in 2000.

Dream on, it isn’t going to happen. Key phrase from the article: “how could anyone remotely intelligent”. They are not even remotely intelligent. Well, they may be somewhat intelligent but they live in a dream world where unicorns poop rainbows with stars in them.

Clasical Liberalism has been dead in washington since the 1930’s...

Neo Liberalism is just Fascism dressed up in the cloak of “democracy” which is really just the rule of the mob, not the rule of law.

Liberalism is a natural outgrowth of the first lie:

Gen 3

the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Liberalism is the arrogant political theory that man is smart enough to be God like.

The source of liberalism is evil and it will be with us in some form until Jesus returns.

I think what is happening is that liberalism is losing its legitimacy in more and more circles. it’s not dead. it’s just becoming a laughing stock for more and more people, hopefully a majority. Look at what’s happening in WIsconsin. A blue state is turning red.

Plus, Obama is having to lie that he is not a big spender in order to get ahead of the coming attacks that he is a spendthrift. This lie admits as an assumption that being a liberal spendthrift is a bad thing.

Actually, there was NOTHING ‘liberal’ about the so-called liberals.

They do not want liberty/freedom from government for anyone except themselves.

They loathe the US Constitution, limited government and the rule of law.

These so called liberals stole a great word, poisoned it and are presently destroying EVERYTHING that classical liberals like John Locke , Adam Smith, Milton Friedman etc, have created.

The folks are narcissists, deeply naive and crave authoritarian rule.....and they will morph like the virus they are.

Yep. It will morph into some other communist agenda/cause like it morphed into progressives and so on. I think it is a disease for which there seems to be no cure.

Liberalism/Socialism/Communism is not dead nor will it die.

It will always thrive due to the hubris of evil people inculcating greed and sloth in the ignorant by eliminating God and the Judeo Christian ethic from public discourse.

“With the obvious global meltdown of Keynesian economics, how could anyone remotely intelligent support the continued deficit spending that is driving the Western World into bankruptcy?”

Intelligence has little to do with it (regardless of how inflated the average leftist’s view of his or her IQ happens to be). Your posted poster says it best — it could be a mental disorder. The kinder answer is that people become “paradigm bound”.

Another answer is that Keynesian economics hasn’t been practiced anywhere for decades — if ever. We’ve never actually seen Keynesianism. If Keynes were alive today, he might be standing on street corners holding a large sign that proclaimed: “I am not a Keynesian”.

Keynes advocated increased government spending, when the economic cycle was in a trough — and, then savings when the cycle was nearing a peak. He also recommended the use of reserve accounts (savings) where possible, rather than debt. For decades, we’ve seen nothing but deficit spending to “stimulate” economies — never savings to cool over-heated economies. Also, the spending was supposed to be for useful things — largely infrastructure. The idea being to build it sooner (for stimulus), and then cut back the spending later (for savings). Contrast that with “stimulus” programs comprising hundreds of billions of wasted dollars.

Liberalism isn’t an intellectual belief, and certainly not a rational belief.

At the sheeperal level, it all boils down to people who believe the lie “I’m a good person”. They are “liberal” in order to advocate for causes that affirm that lie.

The commies, the truly dangerous “liberals”, have no such drive. Their drive is for domination. And they use the sheeperals’ desire to feel good about themselves in order to attain the power to impose that domination.

Just like Rush was wrong when he claimed liberalism was dead after the RINOs errr excuse me the GOP took control of the house and senate thinking liberalism is dead is not only wrong but a big dangerous mistake.

There will always be more losers than winners in life’s lottery and when you have a political system which convinces these inferior people that the reason they don’t have millions or any of the perks in life is because of republicans, you will never defeat them completely.

If all recorded history does not prove to them they are wrong it should be obvious no discussion on our part will be able to enlighten them beyond their status in life a plantation dwellers sucking on taxpayers teats.

It is like trying to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

I assume that you’re asking if it is dead in this country?

If that is the case then, “Yes, liberalism is dead”. It has been replaced by totalitarian communism.

Lest my post #23 somehow be misconstrued as a defence for “pure Keynesianism” — let me add that I think that Hayek, and the Austrian School are right in “the long run”. (The “long run”, where Keynes famously proclaimed “In the long run, we're all dead”. Keynes has been dead for some time now.) The fundamental problem with Keynesianism (even if it were ever to be taken as prescribed), is that it substitutes public-sector central planning, for the private sector and free markets. The central planning results in wasted resources, and just prolongs the agony.

It is plain (to me, at least) that Angela Merkel is more influenced by the Austrian School economists, than she is by (so-called) Keynesiansm. That would explain why she (along with Canada's PM Harper) is championing austerity. She's looking at the problem, and solutions, from a the perspective of a different theory (paradigm) than the leftists who are still bound by the “Keynesian” paradigm.

Liberalism did not die. It morphed to full blown socialism. I am in California and I can tell you without doubt we are a full blow socialist nanny state. True liberals are very rare anymore. They are all some form of soft to hard socialist.

Anyone who turns to communism has given up on life...pure and simple!

I think this is the most profound truth of collectivism.

Human beings are faced with the challenge of growing into higher beings, into spiritual beings, and not live like animals - or lower than animals. Accepting that challenge is the definition of being a "human being."

Collectivists - no matter what they call themselves - have refused that challenge. In the most profound sense, they have refused their humanity. And they know this is the worst thing they could possibly do, and they are profoundly ashamed of themselves.

That's why they claim to be the highest, most moral, best and brightest of all - to cover that most fundamental sin - which makes them paranoid and cruel and shameless. But to the contrary, shame is all they know, and why they believe they can never be forgiven and so forgive no one, constantly seething in terrified hatred in order to keep themselves hidden. And because they can't live with that, either, the final level of their lie is to declare that the evil with which they live their lives is the truth - and force it onto the rest of the world, and burn down what resists them.

That's why ALL of the "political" subjects collectivist, liberals, etc., claim as their own, are stolen - because they have nothing but lies. And they kill those ideas they've stolen - they kill true progress, because it's full of the life that threatens their lies. for the same reasons, they kill growth, they kill community, and they kill peace, while claiming all of them for themselves. They can't do otherwise - it's the cost of their pact with the devil, that killing is all they will ever know.

Because they've already killed themselves.
