Inmate release part of new North Las Vegas plan to reduce jail staffing

North Las Vegas released 70 inmates from its jail Thursday, part of a plan to reduce the size of the facility brought on by a rash of correctional officers calling in sick last weekend, a city official said Friday.

The release of inmates — all of whom were nonviolent offenders — comes days after city leaders told corrections officers their jobs were in jeopardy as the city tries to balance its budget.

Nearly 50 shifts were not covered for three days last weekend due to correction officers calling in sick, he said. The sick calls forced the city to cover the shifts by paying overtime to officers.

Leonard Cardinale, president of the Police Supervisors Association, criticized the city’s move.

“Rather than pay overtime, they would release 70 inmates into the city of North Las Vegas,” Cardinale said.

Rather than deal with union expenses or cut in other areas, you punish the population at large by the release of criminals. It also gives the expectation to criminals that, if caught, they won’t be punished for non violent crimes.

Harry Reid has spent record amounts of money, yet he isn’t even aware Las Vegas can’t balance its budget? Must be why Donald Trump supported him...singing cowboy poetry...

Someone should have been there handing out papers with the addresses of the city officials. If they want to play these stupid games, then play for big money.

--they have unsuccessfully attempted to cut union expenses--no co-operation from the unions--and are about to try another ploy to break the contract, (which happens tobe the subject of the lead editorial in the LV Review-Journal today)--

Keeping a criminal in jail/prison is cheaper than the crimes they commit when they are released.

the union “sick outs” have directly threatened the public’s safety. the union leaders should be called to account for their actions.

if one of these released offenders hurts or kills someone, their blood is on union hands.

Gee, according to all the ads that are on TV around the clock in Nevada, I thought things were getting much better! (sarcasm)

In Reno, Police and Fire are always on the chopping block as well, yet any drive around town will demonstrate where their priorities lie. The roads must be rebuilt 24/7. Whether they need it or not!

When I bought one of my guns, I was warned not to drive through North Las Vegas with it even unloaded and in my trunk when driving to the range. I avoid North Las Vegas like the plague.

It was roughly 3 years ago when I bought the gun, and was told NLV gun laws were so convoluted/confusing it wasn’t worth the risk.
