Distraught over dog's shooting by Fort Worth police officers

Twenty-four hours after a police officer shot Lily, a 5-year-old Border Collie-English Setter mix, its owners still don't understand why the police officer was on their property and why he used lethal force.

... had just returned from a shopping trip and their two dogs had slipped into their truck, then into the garage, before re-emerging when an officer walked up the driveway...

Asked by the officer to control his two dogs, Mark Boling urged him not to advance, but he did. "My dogs don't bite, They're not going to hurt you," Boling, 52, an electronics technician with a defense contractor, recalled saying. "They're just going to run up to you."

A statement issued by police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Criado said the officer waited by the driveway when two barking dogs charged him in an aggressive manner while he repeatedly asked a male at the house to call the animals back. Then the unnamed officer jumped onto the porch pillar.

"As the dogs were getting closer to attack/bite the officer, the officer fired his service weapon, striking the dog closest to him," the spokesman said.

Boling said he had gained control of one of the dogs by the time the officer raised his gun, "Then I hear my wife yelling, 'Don't shoot my baby, please don't hurt my baby!"

From above the dog, the officer fired once, striking the 5-year-old mixed breed on the back. It dashed to the back yard where it bled to death within three minutes.

"You'd better check on your dog," she quoted the officer as responding.

But the policeman still had the gun raised and pointed toward her husband and surviving dog, she asserted.

"Why are you on my property — I didn't call you," Boling recalls asking.

“Ft Worth is full of worthless cops.”

I read the story. This dumba$$ didn’t even know he was in the wrong area to investigate the alleged “copper theft”.

He thought a border collie was a pit bull? Obviously a publik skool graduate.

30 years ago I feared that as the dumbed down generations matured we would get to this point. Now they have the perfect “leader” and we are headed for the perfect storm. I hate being right about some things.

Statement on twitter from FWPD Cheif Of Staff 4 hrs ago re this matter:

Provided KRLD interview ref dog shooting.Leash laws are in place to prevent these tragedies.Still very disheartening for the owners and sad.

He later apologized if the leash comment was insensitive.(i.e. not credible)

So, it's the leash law rational justification ya see. The dog was in his driveway, cops encroaches on territory, and nobody yet knows why, and dog saunters casually out to check things out as dogs do and is executed. I sent a respectful but unambiguous note to the luminary. Noted others also not anymore pleased with this than I.

Not only that, I support FWPD and attended one of their community outreach efforts recently and I'm not even a FW resident, but have had interactions with the dept. I'm burning up with disappointment and just exasperated. Very disappointed in them, and their apparent field directives in dealing with dogs.

I am so damn tired of this. Remind me to give a damn next time an LEO is killed.

Isn't this uplifting.

“Lily, a 5-year-old Border Collie-English Setter mix”

Having had an English Setter and been around lots of Border
Collies and can not think of a way to breed a more lovable,
sweet natured dog. Of course the violent, aggressive name may
have corrupted it.

Were that my dog and my property, the cop would be laid out beside the dog.

Because he wasn’t bright enough to find the address where he was supposed to be two blocks away.

New info to me. Tanks. I’ll look into it. Yes, a report of “Pitbull” spotted alive and well would lend more credibility to a shoot-first approach here, all other facts could be discarded by responders. Should have called out swat team if a dog was reported to have resembled a “Pitbull” per hearsay. That would add up. Fear: primed/reason discarded. SHOOT! Sounds abt right.

Now, I want to see a picture of the cop that did the shooting who is an example of our school system in that he can’t even read a damn address.

I don’t share that sentiment and not at all cool. Hope it’s retracted quickly.

I have been around dogs all my life.
Once, while working in a young family.s house, performing renovation work, the two border collies they had (to actually help corral their two toddler children) watched me intently as I went from garage to basement, several times. In the course of my work, i deviated from this routine to cut a few holes into their new addition. One of the BC’s gently put her jaws around my wrist as to pull me back to my previous path. At the same moment, the wife/mother became alarmed, tried to explain the dog’s actions and plaintively told me she wouldn’t hurt me. I knew what the dog was doing: she was gently guiding me back to where she thought I belonged. There was no harm and no foul. The dogs were doing their job. Pure and simple. I laughed it off and assured the owner that I knew exactly what the dog was doing and they were fortunate to have such well trained and dedicated ‘’toddler sitters’’.

Texas, hmmmm? Just last November, [A] Texas appellate court recently ruled that state law entitles the owners of a wrongfully euthanized dog to recover "sentimental" or "intrinsic" damages from a defendant for the loss of the pet.

Would be nice if Officer Friendly were held personally liable for this...

The cop likely thought that he saw that the dog had an AK-47 (or a Glock).

He shot the dog because he can.

It's all part of our conditioning.
