The luxury carmaker Fisker Automotive continues to signal it could ditch plans to build its next generation hybrid electric vehicle in the United States, despite the nearly $200 million in Obama administration loan money it has already received.
Fisker received federal funds in part to help purchase a shuttered General Motors plant in Delaware, where it predicted it would one day employ 2,000 auto workers to assemble the clean-burning gas-electric family car, known as the Atlantic.
But company executives began hinting in February that it would reconsider that plan and look for a cheaper place to build the car after the Department of Energy froze the $529 million green-energy loan the company had received, and had been drawing on since 2010.
Fisker used the first $169 million in taxpayer funds to bring to market the Karma, a flashy $100,000 hybrid sports sedan that it assembles in Finland.
Earlier this year, one of the Karmas stopped working in the middle of a Consumer Reports road test -- an embarrassing breakdown that Fisker later blamed on a faulty battery. The lithium-ion batteries became the subject of a recall, including for a defect that raised the risk of fires.
More recently, one of the high-priced cars went up in flames in the garage of its Texas owner.

While I hate the idea of the US giving the money for this company, a buddy has one and its sweeettt.
Fiskar was Mike Castle’s gift to Delaware.
And they called us dummies and rubes who voted him outta there.
The RINOS, the elite Blue Blood Republican class, they know everything.
The taxpayers should never be funding corporations, if the government thinks businesses need help... how about cutting taxes?
but, but, but, this was a gift for Delaware from Joe Biden.
How can they do this?
Freepmail "Lazlo in PA" to be added or removed.
Some Fiskar Karma owners prefer to think of it as hot!
“Fisker May Never Build Electric Cars in US”
Yeah, but, seriously...can you blame them?
We have the highest corporate tax rates on Earth, the only ones who can get ahead is by getting politicians to fork up illicit (in my opinion) subsidies
How about cutting through the crap and call it what it is......the “Obama”, it’s gonna fail anyway.
I agree Geron.
Personally I think electric cycles would be a far more efficient direction for electric vehicles to go. I would go with making them mostly for urban use (basically electric scooters) while test marketing something bigger like touring bikes.
This reminds me, I have a Fisker on my butt I need to get lanced!
In the middle of a road test, that was part of the check in process. CR got part way through a speedometer calibration test when the car stopped working. They said they had never had a car fail during the check in period.
Electric scooters are already out there. I see them at Wall Mart for under 200 clams. I don’t know what the range is or how long it takes to charge. Motorcycles are a different thing. Batteries are heavy and then add a motor. That might be too heavy to control safely.
Speaking of butts, you should check out the assets on the model in the Fiskar brochure. Makes me want to buy.
