"He argued that “it’s not so much that [stem-cell research has] diminished in its prospects for breakthroughs as much as it’s the other avenues of research have grown and multiplied and become as much or more promising."

Besides the fact that embryonic stem cells don't work, and even if they did would not be morally defensible, it is always the case that classic "small molecule" pharmacology which delivers a comparable benefit is highly preferable to macromolecule and/or cell therapy. This is due to a variety of issues having to do with management of duration and intensity of pharmacological effect, deliverability, potential side effects, etc. (i.e., pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics).

There is a direct correlation to the stem cell lines Bush allowed for funding research and the ability now to ‘back the cells up’ along the continuum of cell maturation. A recent application of ‘adult stem cells’ taken from donated palcentas regrew a man’s foot in Dalton, GA. The ability to take cells back to an earlier stem cell matrix then bring them forward in differentiation was soemthing learned through studying the cell lines President Bush allowed to continue receiving funding for research. He also disallowed any funding for new embryonic stem cell lines because that would have required killing embryonic humans to get their body parts. But I seriously doubt that folks like Michael J Fox or Mary Tyler Moore care about the etics of the killing.
