New York City officials displayed big cups of soda along with the amount of sugar in them
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed banning sales of large soft drinks. Does this herald the end of the popular, money-making bucket-sized cups of soda?
The cold, sugary caffeinated goodness of a big cup of Coca-Cola so delights Chris Alexander he quips it helps sooth his post-traumatic stress disorder.
"If I get agitated, I'll have an incredible urge to get a Coke," says Alexander, a 37-year-old US Army veteran who served several tours in Iraq.
"I'll go get a 48-ounce Big Gulp every once in a while. It's just convenient. If I'm working a lot of hours, I'll just grab a giant one and take it to the office and let it sit there for a while."
Forty-eight ounces (1.42 litres) of soda has more calories than an eight-ounce (227g) T-bone steak, and 5.5 ounces (156g) of sugar, and Alexander admits he gains weight if he slurps the sodas but lets his exercise routine slacken.
But in convenience stores across America, one can buy even larger drinks - one of America's largest convenience store chains, 7-Eleven, sells a 50-ounce (1.5-litre) "Double Gulp" soda, and has at times sold a 64-ounce (1.9-litre) soda.
"They're quite popular," says Margaret Chabris, a spokeswoman for 7-Eleven, which has 7,800 convenience stores in the US.
"People are quite thirsty and want a large-sized soda."

Think of the Lenins, the Stalins, the Maos, the Pol Pots and all those who decided what was best for their people without asking them for their opinion.
The biggest issue that I have with soda sizes is that they’re such a high-margin product for fast-food restaurants that you can no longer get the size you really want. What was once (when I was growing up) a “large” is now a “small” and people are forced to pay for additional volume beyond what they really want.
Now having said that, I don’t think that it’s government’s business to get involved, and it’s up to the consumer to be informed of the revenue-enhancing business practices and to respond accordingly. Several years ago I worked near a Taco Bell, would hit the drive-through regularly for lunch. After the third time they gave me a truck-driver’s special instead of the “small” I’d ordered (claiming they were all out of smaller cups, but still charging me full price for a massive drink), I just started hitting a vending machine on my way out the door at work then making a point to pop the $0.60, 12oz can when I pulled up to the window to collect the food.
How much more do we let politicians get away with before we start hanging them from lampposts?

I’ll bet the minimum wage guy at the Taco Bell drive-thru was really steamed that you beat his nefarious scheme!

I remember when Coastal Appliance Center in Panama City, Florida had their grand opening they advertised free soft drinks.
I was about 5 years old so it would have been around 1952. Our Father had a good job but no money to waste as he had a family of 7. We never got soft drinks as a normal thing.
I remember there was a brand called grapette which came in little 6 ounce bottles. I was old enough to realize if you had no limit on the number you could drink, then getting the smallest size was better since they all normally sold for 5 cents. If I had, had to pay I would have bought the largest but since they were free I drank a bunch of those grapettes, probably 7 or 8. I was surprised they didn’t make me sick.
Every fat person I know drinks diet soda anyhow.
Unintended Consequences.
People will still drink the same amount, they will just have to make multiple purchases. More paper cup trash.

First note that they did not ban the large sodas in retail stores (such as grocery stores). Not a very level playing field. Second, I can see convenience stores springing up at the edges of NYC hawking cigarettes, trans fats, salty stuff, super sized sodas, etc. Third, eventually the mob will start black marketing the stuff in the city, with payoffs to the police to keep quiet. I can see it now. A large box truck pulls into an alley and opens up the back and starts selling candy bars, bucket of soda, foot long cigarettes, etc. until the police come, pocket their take and a little something for the Bloomberg re-election campaign, before they have them move to a new location.
