NEW YORK - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg offered a full-throated defense of his proposed ban on large-size sugary sodas on Friday, calling criticism of the proposal "ridiculous" and saying his city is again leading the way in taking on critical health issues.

Coca-Cola, the world's largest soft-drink maker, assailed the proposal in a statement on Thursday.

"New Yorkers expect and deserve better than this,' the Coca-Cola statement said. "They can make their own choices about beverages they purchase."

Meanwhile, New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, told The New York Post on Thursday that he was considering state legislation to thwart the measure.

"We may be getting too close to Big Brother," Silver told the newspaper. "I just think we ought to step back and look at the freedoms that we have been given in this country and reflect on them."

"You think this was bad?" Bloomberg asked. With the smoking ban, "everybody was opposed to it. today, virtually every major city in America does it ... whole countries!

"If people are yelling and screaming, there's nothing you can do about that. I mean, this is ridiculous."

"Nobody is taking away any of your rights," Bloomberg said later in the broadcast. "This way, we're just telling you That's a lot of soda.'

Unconstitutional pat downs and now soda bans? And for the privilege of this you pay an $8.00 toll to enter the city.

That’s why I don’t go there. Enjoy your city Mayor pompous ass .

Someone needs to put this globalist traitor on the spot and ask him what he thinks should be done about gmo foods and Monsanto.

When you willingly live on a tiny island with millions of people, this is the kind of crap you get. After 9/11, when Giuliani said something like “We’re all New Yorkers today”, I thought, “I’m not and never will be a New Yorker.” because I would never submit to their lifestyle.

He can pass whatever he wants in NYC, but when they bring that law to the south, I think the south will finally rise again! We like our big drinks down here.

It is about the taxes per bottle- if people buy two instead of one - the city will win.

I hope NYC doesn’t crack - it is a fun place and I have a 20 year old daughter there who adores the place. She lives just above Canal Street.

Real diversity is there - the Dutch set the tone just right- so great to shop in a non Mall setting - it is pure joy - and I hate to shop!!

“never submit to their lifestyle..”

I thought that too until I experienced Manhattan and did a lot of reading about the history - especially lower Manhattan.

I am an upstater born and bred and had never thought I would see the day I changed my mind.

whats to prevent any retailer from offering free refills on
the 16 oz. size? Or f’instance paying 1 buck for a 16oz.
drink, and your next drink is 1 cent?
The whole thing is so unenforceable and stupid I cannot
even believe it....
Maybe if the mayor would stop paying the health care costs
for diabetes and cardiac disease people might start “paying”
attention to their diets instead of “paying” inept
gov’mint workers to watch out for them. Win on gov’mint
interference, win on state/city budgets, win on bloated
government workforce, win on health...And you would have
more money to spend on gooooood foooood..How’s that
New Yorkers?

Yes...the smoking ban was bad. I still oppose it. It is a violation of property rights. And I’m a non-smoker. And, now, look at the precedent it set.

A million times this. I also don't smoke, but it didn't take a genius to see that was a trial run to see if people would accept it.

Good for you. I’m glad you like it. But, I would submit that there is a helluva lot more difference in lifestyles between NYC and the deep south than there is between NYC and upstate NY.

“Bloomberg said that the proposal was aimed towards the city’s poorer residents who may not have a sophisticated understanding of nutrition. He insisted that the measure is not targeted towards big soda companies like PepsiCo and Coca-Cola.”

So because they’re poor they’re stupid? Wow.. that’s elitism at it’s most brazen

Whether we consume too much sugar or not is not the province of government period. ......................... It will be if SCOTUS doesn’t overturn bammycare.

Exactly, that's why Socialized Healthcare is insidious....now EVERYTHING will be the government's business.

The lunatic Bloomberg has more issues with ‘’health and safety’’ in the fact that huge rats infest every corner of his city. Instead of tackling real issues, the moron offers up feelgood crap to appease the radical nyc fringes.

“heluva lot more difference in lifestyles..

O so right - although NYC/Manhattan is a draw for the best and curious - just read the latest book on the Brooklyn Bridge - or weep over the destruction of the original Penn Station.

I have come to learn that NYC is a microcosim of this our country.

There are a hell of a lot of differences between the outer boros and Manhattan as well. The whole of NYC is not some monolithic block. Over in Queens, the Manhattanites think I live in the sticks and are the equivalent of a hillbilly. And as for the deep south, you have good and bad like any other place. The fact is, now no matter where you live, the Pols all think that they are omnipotent and we the voters are just an annoyance.
