Cops gun down man for legally carrying firearm
WND ^ | June 2, 1012 | Jeff Knox

Erik Scott was a West Point graduate who went on to serve honorably in the Army, get his MBA from Duke and establish a lucrative career in real estate and as a sales rep for a medical device company. He was 38 years old when he was gunned down in 2010 in the portico of a Las Vegas area Costco store by officers from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. While it was 7 bullets from the only people we’re supposed to trust with guns that snuffed out Erik Scott’s life, what really killed him was an irrational fear of firearms – hoplophobia

I feel so deprived, d. And I thought I was fairly well-read on the Net. I honest-to-heck don’t remember this story anywhere at all in 2010-11.

I found the archive link to it, and will go do some reading.

The whole sitch reminds of the cops who shoot dogs (who aren’t threaten the officer(s))but the cops just over-react and go all trigger happy.

As America slips into third world dictator status I expect the number of people who will be costcoed in the future to increase.

Au contraire: The National Association of Police Organizations has honored two Metro Police officers who were involved in the fatal shooting of Erik Scott

“I have one and you could put you finger in it and fire the gun easily while it was holstered.”

Odd. I tried it with mine and it would be damned awkward. Even more so since Scott was carrying without a round in the chamber.

The bottom line for me was they opened fire without giving him a chance to comply. From the tape:

14:11 (D): “And do they see him?”

14:12 (SL): “Ah, negative.”

14:13 (D): “Have they walked out the door right now? What is that guy doing right this...”

14:16 (Unidentified Officer’s Voice(s) in Background): “Put your hands where I see them now, drop it, get on the ground, get on the ground...”

[At 14:18, multiple, rapidly fired gunshots can be clearly heard in the background.]

[Officer call sign 2V16, probably Mosher, at 19:11, radios, and the transcript indicates he’s yelling: “2V16, we got shots fired, shots fired!” The Dispatcher asks if anyone is down and 2V16 does not directly reply, saying only “Roll medical.” Approximately 27 seconds later, 2V16 is asked if it is safe for others to enter the building. He does not respond to this question but blurts out: “He pulled a 413 and pointed it in my direction.” Is this an officer who is still unsettled by the shock of a shooting, or an officer trying to get information on the record that he knows will help him later? This was apparently not pursued at the Inquest.]

14:19 (D): “Shay. Hello. Shay.”

14:20 (SL): “He pulled a firearm. Yeah, I’m here, I’m here.”

At 14:12, the cops have not figured out that Eric Scott is the ‘deranged suspect’, yet at 14:18 they are shooting. What happened in 6 seconds that made them go from ‘where is he’ to ‘must shoot to save our lives’?

In that time frame, how could ANYONE have complied?

I’d be willing to bet Trigger Finger didn’t mean to shoot Scott. I’d bet he had his finger on the trigger of his Glock, and was just so tense he fired by accident - and then everyone else joined in.

This is a free, serialized book of fiction, with a new chapter posted every week. "The Permit" was inspired by the actual event of my son, Erik Scott, being killed in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 10, 2010 (www.erikbscott.com). Although certain elements are true, this is strictly a work of fiction, a product of my imagination, and all characters bear no relationship to actual persons, living or dead. However, a number of technologies and weapon systems depicted herein do exist. Please start with the “New PREFACE,” below. — William B. Scott

Chapter One starts here

“The Officers were clearly caught by surprise to find Scott, a man who moments earlier walked past them and was obviously unremarkable, suddenly identified as the suspect, in their midst. Drawing down on him, their commands and responses were hasty, uncoordinated, and everyone in the immediate area including themselves was in danger, but not from Scott, from the Officers, who were likely pointing their weapons at each other with Scott between them (due to “tunnel vision” they would almost certainly have been unaware of the danger). Scott had, from the sound of the first command, only about two seconds to save his life. Witnesses testified that he was clearly “surprised”— anyone would be—but given the time frame, he did not have sufficient time to respond to any command before being shot in the heart, and if he did, in fact, reach toward his right side, it may have been nothing more than a last ditch reaction to the surprise and stress, an attempt to disarm himself and defuse the situation. It was almost certainly not an attempt to shoot the Officers. “

Did COSTCO actually *lose* the video of the event?

I-Team: Is a Serial Killer Hunting Motorists in Northern Nevada?

Here's another Nevada story from Las Vegas newsman George Knapp that may be of interest..

and just maybe someone here has a clue that the northern Nevada sheriff's office could use.

I have traveled the I-80 route and I know others driving to Utah from Sacramento also use I-80 across norther Nevada.

"In 2009, the FBI established a task force to look at serial killers working as truck drivers. Since then, the bureau has profiled more than 200 possible trucker killers and more than 500 murder victims, many of them prostitutes.

"At least 10 suspected serial killers have been arrested, including Chester Todd who was picked up in February in Las Vegas, suspected in a string of rapes and murders.

"The bureau has a map of possible trucker slayings, including six in Nevada, but, has done little to publicize the task force and would not comment on this report."

Very informative post. I still believe the cops did not give him time to comply, and find your comment about the holster to be questionable, but overall you provide good information. Thanks.

Much more comprehensive description here-

http://erikbscottmemorialblog.blogspot.com/

As Erik Scott walked to the exit, more than a dozen police cruisers rolled up. Officers jumped out, yelled conflicting commands at Scott — “Get on the ground!” “Drop your weapon!” “Keep your hands up!” — and then shot him within two seconds of issuing those commands, Scott says, citing dispatch recordings.

Mosher, who shot and killed a citizen in 2006, shot him twice, and Mendiola and Stark shot him five times in his back, after he fell, Scott says.

Police didn’t take possession of Costco’s video until five days later, but the segments of the shooting were found to be corrupted.

The same day as the shooting, the Public Administrator, a former Vegas officer, and a police officer used a locksmith to gain entry to Erik’s condo, where they confiscated a West Point saber mounted in a shadow box and a pistol he kept in a drawer, logging those items in police reports.

But after the search was conducted, the family realized two other handguns were missing and not logged in police reports. Scott contends the cops wanted a second gun, because they claimed Erik pulled a gun on them, prompting them to fire. But that story didn’t gibe with a report medics had written for their employer, American Medical Response, saying the gun was still on Erik, when he was placed inside the ambulance. Medics gave the gun to police, and photos of the shooting scene taken by police show a handgun and a phone on the pavement, after the pavement had been washed of blood, Scott says.

If I recall correctly, the vidoes were quickly siezed by the police - and then mysteriously found to be defective. Aka scrubbed.

This is from PJ Media...” After hearing the shots I see the guy going down. I looked at — I saw his hands. His hands had no gun in it. I looked on the ground because — just, I just did that. I looked down and I didn’t see a gun. I saw what I thought were maybe sunglasses. And a pen.

This matches up with several other eyewitness claims that officers William Mosher, Joshua Stark, and Thomas Mendiola fired nearly immediately after shouting conflicting commands at Scott, giving him little or no time to respond. Four other witnesses within 20 feet of the store’s entrance all agree that Scott never brandished a weapon or made a move that could be interpreted as brandishing a weapon.
At what point are we going to rebel from these governments run amok?

Eric assumed the position (hands up) and reached for his gun, and removed it and the holster (gun never came out of the holster) and he was shot. . . .

. . . . The police acted appropriately based on the information they were given and based on the actions of Eric.

Amazing cognitive dissonance on your part.

Speaking of confusion, police shootings, death, and in this case the homeowner and family wondering what the hell happened.. it's called SWAT-ing. (In case some have not seen this.)

Conservative bloggers say they're targets of dangerous 'SWAT-ing' prank

It's done deliberately and with the purpose of tricking the police into doing exactly what these Vegas police did -- only it's you and it's done at your home.
