SAN DIEGO (AP) — Voters in two major California cities overwhelmingly approved cuts to retirement benefits for city workers in what supporters said was a mandate that may lead to similar ballot initiatives in other states and cities that are struggling with mounting pension obligations.
Supporters had a simple message to voters in San Diego and San Jose: Pensions for city workers are unaffordable and more generous than many private companies offer, forcing libraries to slash hours and potholes to go unfilled.
"The public is frustrated," said San Diego Councilman Carl DeMaio, a Republican who staked his mayoral bid on the pension measure and advanced to a November runoff in Tuesday's election to lead the nation's eighth-largest city.
In San Diego, 66 percent voted in favor of Proposition B, while 34 percent were opposed. Nearly 97 percent of precincts were tallied by early Wednesday.
The landslide was even bigger in San Jose, the nation's 10th-largest city. With all precincts counted, 70 percent were in favor of Measure B and 30 percent were opposed.

Social Security should be paid out EQUAL TO what one has paid into it and no more. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works.. Social Security checks are issued to people who never even worked a day in their life. The system is idiotic and with people living longer, most people receive over TWICE what they ever paid into it. This system cannot and will not sustain itself.
This is the worst damn thing that's ever been foisted on this country. People need to realize the Supreme Court has ruled that no one has any legal claim to a dime that they've put into it. It totally depends on the good graces (yeah right) of the Federal government.
Frankly, I'll be surprised to ever see a dime of it back. Just makes me want to puke.

I’m paying these retirees and they never worked for me. They worked for someone 40 years ago who presumed on me to pay pensions in the next century.

Your right, this only applies to new hires. San Jose is still on the hook for current employees and retirees. As is San Diego. These pensions literally make me sick. I heard on a local radio show that there are retired librarians receiving over 100 grand a year. Can you believe it?!!
They need to start all new hires on a defined contribution plan instead of a defined benefit plan.

The government didn’t spend their money, (unless your talking Social Security,) The government, local and state, made promises to public employees that they knew they couldn’t keep. The pensions for retired public employees is beyond obscene. Calif. has a deficit of 14 billion and Gov. Brown wants to raise taxes to cover it. Guess where over 50% of the newly generated revenue will go. Yep, to cover pensions for retired public employees.

But it would be nice to see her pension cut by say 50%.
If she retired already, that won’t happen. This will be the people who begin work as Teachers tomorrow or whatever date they deem the need to start.
Most republicans won’t touch police/fire/EMS pensions...even Walker exempted them in WI.
between pension spiking and double dipping, it bankrupts cities just as surely as school administrator’s six figure contracts.

The employees (unions) aren’t pure and righteous in this. Those pensions were promised as a result of exactly the type of cronyism and corruption that comes when politicians realize that they can buy the votes of the government union class by allocating ever higher wages and pensions at the expense of the public purse, and that they will have been long gone by the time the piper demands his due. THIS is why govt unions are inherently corrupt and should be abolished.

The word “courts” denotes a sense of honor and justice completely lost on the leftist issuing theses basically arbitrary edicts.
Perhaps we should simply refer to them by name, or as lawless magistrates?
