Skip to comments.Man filmed whipping his son during game of catch arrested for child abuse (California)

A California water agency director has been arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after a neighbour shot and posted an online video of him whipping his stepson with a belt while playing catch.
Imperial Irrigation District Director Anthony Sanchez, 34, was arrested Friday on $100,000 bond according to Sheriff's Lt. Scott Sheppeard after caught hitting the child with a belt in one hand and a baseball glove in the other.
In the video uploaded to YouTube, the stepfather's seen repeatedly beating the boy, even knocking him to the ground, before stepping back to wait for him to toss the ball back which he drops.
After a long stall by the boy who stands frozen in place, the man returns to him - a glove on one hand and a belt in the other - hitting him once again.
The boy can be seen physically upset, holding his body, before Lopez opens his window, calling at him to stop.

I may be twisted, but I never ended up in jail and for that I thank my beloved sainted, departed father.
It is imperative to the game of baseball that one catch a ball each and every time a playable ball is hit to a fielder. Sometimes it will be a fly ball, a pop-up, a line drive or even a tricky grounder, but errors lead to unearned runs which in a big game can be costly and in the long term much more painful than a whipping.
One day, when this kid makes a diving catch to win the World Series, he will know that if were not for his Old Man beating the crap out of him for missing a routine catch back in 2012 that he would not be the hero of a World Championship baseball team.
This wasn't the world series slick.
As a result of the beating he took for missing that one, he didn’t catch many more balls for the people who did so, did he???
Of course it is not the World Series, but one day he will be in the World Series and he will have the focus and discipline to not miss a simple catch.
What would be more painful, a whipping as a child or living the the horrid memory that it was your error that cost your team a World Series?
Grown men who aren’t the kid’s father have no right to lay hands on a kid. Ever.
Way to go, mom, bringing an abuser into your kid’s life!
You’ve just increased fivefold his chances of going to prison, dropping out of school, fathering out of wedlock children, and being an abuser himself.
that is moronic, idiotic, stupid depraved and nonsensical. Stop
So basically you’re saying that if only Nelson Cruz’s dad had beat him up as a kid, the Rangers would have won the World Series last year.
“I sense another poor guy is about to get railroaded for behavior that wasnt really that bad and may have been done for good cause.”
Wrong. Even if the SOB married the kid’s mom, he’s not the kid’s father and he has no right to lay hands on him for any reason. Ever.
yeah you are twisted apparently, praising A STEPFATHER for being abusive.
STEP PARENTS KEEP YOUR MITTS OFF THE KIDS
This video is disgusting. It isn’t discipline,it’s evil laziness. It’s hard to teach and discipline your kids. It’s easy to beat the crap out of them. Shame on this cowardly bully. Good for the neighbor who spoke up. Maybe that little boy will be able to learn what a man is.
I would say that goes even if he was the kid's natural father.
There are a few MLB players I would love to whip with a belt.
My father was a big tough cop and never laid a hand on us kids in anger, all he had to do was give us a certain look and we shut up. My brother was quiet, but us 3 girls were a handfull....first time he laid a hand on me in anger I was 16 and almost went through the wall....never call your father a name during an argument.....I only did once.
We were raised to think for ourselves and dinner time was full of discussions and why we thought the way we did...you teach your child, you don't beat them...learned to play chess at 7 and poker by 10....that was family entertainment along with lots of books...oops no tv for homes yet, just radio, The Shadow knows,,,,green hornet......lone ranger....fibber Mcgee and molly...Not brought up on violence on TV or porno on the internet....lucky time to be born back then....
I don't know. My father and mother hit me a few times. But I don't think the few times I was hit did me much good. A few of the times, it was uncalled for, unjust, and over-the-top. I remember those incidents with bitterness. The other times left little lasting impression.
One of my older brothers, and my younger sister, those two received most of the belts, slaps, spankings, hairbrushes and baseball bats in my family. Neither of them turned out too well. Their kids are even worse off - although their kids got plenty of slaps, belts, kicks, etc.
My other older brother and I, we almost never got hit. We both finished college (I eventually completed a masters degree), launched careers, happily married, had/have kids growing to mature, happy and healthy adulthood.
My two sons have never been hit. Not that my wife or I foreswore spanking, it just never really seemed necessary. Other methods of discipline seemed to work just fine.
They appear to be turning out half-way decently, too.
“So basically youre saying that if only Nelson Cruzs dad had beat him up as a kid, the Rangers would have won the World Series last year.”
Cruz’s miss of that simple fly ball was a more egregious error than even Bill Buckner’s 1986 miss of that grounder.
And now, Nelson Cruz has to live with the deep pain of costing the Rangers a World Series, which without a doubt is more painful than a whipping his old man could have administered.
At the very least, after the 2011 World Series game, Nolan Ryan should gone into the shower room armed with a belt, a rubber hose, and a cattle prod and administered some strict discipline on Nelson.
Beautiful scripture. Sadly many of us were not brought up such. Happily, God uses this hateful world to squeeze us to a realization of our bankruptcy and need of Him.
I don’t know how men in this country can stand having other men raise their children.
And how do women in this country justify bringing strange men into their kids’ lives when everyone knows the statistics of boyfriend/step-parent abuse?
This is what happens when you won’t marry or stay married to your kids’ mothers.
This boy’s own father has failed him as much as the mother by putting him in the path of an abuser.
Where is he? He needs to be in court like yesterday filing for full custody until mommy kicks the SOB out of her bed.
You think that’s appropriate behavior by the father? I hope you people don’t have kids and if you do, may God spare us from them when they grow up.
We don’t know the whole situation. The kid could have been mouthing off and the father was just swatting him on the rear. Still, I believe the kid was way too old for corporal punishment. You should only swat your kid between the ages of 2 to 4-when he does something like run into traffic or stick his finger in a wall socket. I think the neighbor was actually a bigger jerk. There had to be a much better way to handle that situation. He shoulda gone outside and calmly talk to the father and tell him to knock it off. Think about it. What did the neighbor teach both the kid and the father. He might of just as well said, “Hey, buddy, You know what? You’re right. Violence is the answer.”
“The kid could have been mouthing off and the father was just swatting him on the rear. Still, I believe the kid was way too old for corporal punishment.
Please keep in mind that Colonel Kangaroo outranks Corporal Punishment.
All this is going to do is confuse the child,it is degrading precisely because it is uncalled for and it is done in a semi-public setting. It is an adult going through the motions of trying to raise a child....it is pathetic.
Sure we do...Listen to the video. The neighbor heard and watched the whole thing, and told the punk step dad to knock off beating on the kid for not playing catch right. Then told the step dad, "You want come up here and try that on me"?
If the kid simply "mouthed off" how is it the dad already had a belt in his hand?
Are we supposed to believe the kid told the dad to f-off and the dad continued playing catch with him?
Or are you suggesting the kid kept mouthing off after being whipped multiple times?
“I’ll say for what seems to be the 1000th time, I am not for a kid getting a whipping for dropping a ball but WE DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY FROM WHAT THE VIDEO SHOWS.”
When you say: “I am not for... but...” you are qualifying your objection.
And common sense and decency demand that everyone object without reservation to the brutality depicted in this video. With no qualifiers. With no “we need more information.” No, we don’t.
You’re saying is there’s a plausible scenario — a ‘whole story’ — that if only we knew it, THIS BEAT-DOWN MIGHT BE OKAY.
There are no circumstances, no second act, real or imaginary, in which this would be okay. So we do in fact know the ‘Whole Story’: Grown Man Beats Child. The End.
“Please keep in mind that Colonel Kangaroo outranks Corporal Punishment.”
There is no reason to whip the kid with a belt over a game of catch. Only a moron would do that.
They talk that late? I should have been clearer, it doesn’t improve behavior in the long run.
Well, Given that it’s California, accounting for the man’s age, race and title - he’s likely a Democrat political appointee and most certainly deserves jail time for something. So why not this?
There is no excuse for what he was doing to that boy. He should spend some time in jail to think about it too.
“Well, Given that its California, accounting for the mans age, race and title - hes likely a Democrat political appointee and most certainly deserves jail time for something. So why not this?”
Can’t argue that one. Anything that can be done to remove these leeches from society, with their lifelong, inflation-adjusted, pensions, can only be a good thing.
I am 50 years old. I come from the era when a father used a belt for discipline.
I am also a father.
I watched the video.
The man is an asshole. He should have HIS ass kicked.
He isn’t “teaching” that kid anything except to distrust and despise his “stepfather”.
It makes me ill to hear freepers defending this jerk’s actions.
you are absolutely right. I bet the little boy hates that steaming pile of excrement because that steaming pile of excrement is banging his mom. And justifiably so. She should have stayed unmarried at least until the little boy was grown. Now she’s brought a heathen into their home and wrecked it.
If they arrested the guy, then they have probable cause (unless youre the Zimmerman prosecutor). Being that they arrested him on felony charges, I suspect they examined the kid and found serious marks on him. Of course I could be wrong - its always possible that a feminist saw the tape and considered it ample evidence for ruining a mans life, but, more likely, there was good cause. You think Zimmerman's prosecutor is a rarity out there in the land of prosecutors?
I mean it is totally justifiable that the little boy hates the steaming pile of excrement.
“I sense another poor guy is about to get railroaded for behavior that wasnt really that bad and may have been done for good cause.”
It is completely amazing to me that you write a post like this. I hope the bastard has to do some jail time and pays a hefty fine. I am 72 years old, and I grew up with a father for whom had enough respect that he didn’t need to hit me to get my attention. There really isn’t any good reason to hit a child, but it’s easier than being a real parent just to whack your kid. It shows a complete lack of parenting skills.
Pretty disgusting isn't it? It takes all kinds.
I said up thread, I played all sports, played catch with my kids for nearly 15 years, never once did it with a damn belt in my hand.
We had neighborhood BB gun target practice with my boys and their friends, for years, totally supervised when my kids turned 5 or 6..
Maybe I should have whipped my kids for not hitting the bullseye or coke can every time?
Agree, some of the comments here are just flat out disturbing.
“You think Zimmerman’s prosecutor is a rarity out there in the land of prosecutors? “
Overall, yes. But, of course, there are a lot like her...starting with Duke and then Wenatchee.
But, in this case, you had the video first and the guy was arrested...he’s probably someone that shouldn’t be near kids - but we’ll find out.
Exactly... There is a huge difference between the two, and btw, kids instinctively know that difference after they reach a certain age. One who uses extreme “corporal punishment” (aka child abuse) may think their child is “broken” and behaving because they have “learned” better, but the rage and wrath inside builds for so many of them. On the other hand, if parents do nothing at all the kids will grow up foolish and headstrong. As always the balance is somewhere in the middle.
The “rod of correction” is not meant to smack a child down, it is meant to be guidance. Many parents - mostly out of fear - take it way too far. They then forget that there is another part of that whole passage in Proverbs - Fathers do not provoke your child to wrath (in our society perhaps it should be commonly said as ‘parents’ due to so many families without fathers).
A willfully disobedient child, and an adult who doesn’t even understand how to make it in this world without taking from others in a variety of ways is what you get when you are a parent UNWORTHY of honor who either never disciplines at all, or abuses a child into submission never truly teaching them anything except fear, intimidation, and bullying. A horrible path to have to go down as an adolescent or an adult which is why so many of these kids will end up in trouble, which then makes it a problem for all the rest of us.
Thank God for neighbors like the person who filmed this and turned it in. Surely there will be those who will say horrible things about that person, but they will perhaps never know how much good they have done for that child.
Just because our parent(s) were abusive and used “corporal punishment” ALL the time on us older, and not so much older people does NOT mean they should be thanked for that. If you went through that and STILL became a decent person then it is YOU who have made that accomplishment DESPITE the abuse you suffered.
Minimizing or justifying any kind of abusive behavior does no-one any good at all - that is what allows the cycle to continue. AND, it is probably why so many people - again out of fear - cannot see any difference between discipline and abuse.
ALL JMO, but I’ve been there as a survivor of child abuse, and now as a proud parent of two “adult” children and two teens. I REALLY understood the difference and wanted to be sure my daughters NEVER felt like I did. We spoke about this the other day in fact, and between all of us we can only remember several (like 3 or 4) times in the last 20 years that I have EVER spanked them (and it was true spankings - not being whipped with a belt, or anything else - being hit with a belt is NOT discipline it is TORTURE and abuse). I haven’t NEEDED to do more than that because there are OTHER ways to teach a child that will actually give them the skills they need to be REASONABLE people, neither spoiled nor abusive to others.
Ah God! maybe a secret vice more widespread than most suspect has had its lid flipped off.
If two adult fags want to play with each other that way, well let them beat the tar out of one another so long as they don’t hurt anybody else and suck up the personal consequences themselves. God would not want it that way, but he gives certain permissions even to the devil.
When a SMALL CHILD is pulled into this sort of VIOLENT PLAY, this is what? Criminal? Dirt ignorant? Cruel? Sick? Vile? Satanic? Wicked? I don’t know if there is a single word that wraps this up.
I sure HOPE the chesty thumpers are KIDDING about this. Stories like this apparently are rare. Idiots like that jerk are also ruining the freedom of normal families to make proper use of, er, chastisement by being the perfect poster pests for such things as state bans.
Bullying is an attitude and need never (or seldom) come to vicious blows. It also has other things to strike with, like shame.
It will suck to be them at God’s throne. “Why did you cause that little one to stumble?!?”
My high school principal, coach and most teachers would be arrested today.
>Playing catch at your house must have been blistering fun!
Wasn’t for playing catch.
Backtalk, hitting my sister, stuff like that.
If this whipping in California was for merely dropping a baseball, I'd agree it was uncalled for and despicable. But we can't tell from the video what it was really for.
You're a glaring idiot...Ya even put California in the title, when the second word in the article is, "California". How obvious can you get?
But it backfired on ya slick, as 98 percent of the posters think you're some kind of sadistic weirdo.
The neighbor did the right thing, and probably should have just went over and kicked the step dads ass or threatened him with a whip, instead of just challenging the step dad like he did.
Any father who plays a game of catch with his very young son, glove on one hand and a belt in the other, is an ass.
You’re supposed to be a hero to your kids, and this is certainly not the way to go about it.
All the “I would have ended up in jail unless..”, “the jails are full because..” hoo-haa reek of desperation to justify what would otherwise be unjustifiable.
It doesn’t help that the assertion is demonstrably false. There are several countries in the west (I happen to live in one..) in which any form of discipline that leaves marks on a kid is a criminal offence.
Anyone who takes the time to look beyond the end of their noses will find that incarceration rates and crime rates (per capita incarceration especially) are much lower than the US.
I see you are well-practiced at straw-man rationalizations.
