White House: Bryson to take medical leave
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | June 11, 2012

(AP) -- The White House says Commerce Secretary John Bryson will take a medical leave as he undergoes tests and evaluations after suffering a seizure in connection with two traffic accidents in the Los Angeles.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement Monday that President Barack Obama's thoughts were with Bryson and his family.

The department said Bryson suffered a seizure on Saturday and had "limited recall" of the events related to

I always cringe at that “our thoughts are with so-and-so”. How utterly meaningless. “Thoughts” never helped anybody—how about “our PRAYERS are with so-and-so”?

Alcohol lowers the threshold for seizures.

My 15 year old daughter has a seizure disorder (hasn’t had one in 5 years), and the doctor said that lots of kids stop having seizures then when they go to college they start up again due to stress, drinking, not getting enough sleep.

Even if he is in the Obama administration, my prayers are still with them. Seizures are horrible, and I don’t wish them on anyone.

“Thoughts” may mean get well wishes or be a euphemism for prayers used when addressing a mixed group some of whom are not religious. It’s probably not something that merits getting overly picky about.

yes, alcohol, stress, and many medicines lower the seizure threshhold.

The question is why did he have a seizure? It could be a brain tumor.

He and his family in our prayers.

I think the term of art is, “I have no specific recollection of that to which you refer.”

With this formulation, the politician can beat a perjury rap. He/she can always argue that his/her interpretation of “that to which you refer” was different from the “specific” recollection that he/she had.

I don’t buy this “seizure” story one tiny bit.

I think this guy was a drunk driver, period.

When they found out who he was, they had to come up with something that would keep the issue from impacting on Obama.

Rules are different for the political elite. Especially if they are Liberals.

"Limited recall. Isn’t that the same thing Hillary! had?"

Obama gives this guy medical leave for not being able to recall the accidents he had, yet fired IG Gerald Walpin for allegedly being confused at a meeting. One article states that Bryson hit a car, spoke to the cars' occupants, then hit the car again as he drove off. Seizure my ass.

I am skeptical too! I've taught swim lessons to children that are prone to seizures and I've seen 3 episodes up close and in person.

Bryson hitting a car. Hitting the car again. Talking to the driver. Leaving the scene. Hitting a different car and being found unconscious... does not sound remotely like the seizures I witnessed!

I guess this means that Obama doesn't want the spectacle of Senate confirmation hearings in advance of the election. It would become a referendum on Obama's handling of the economy.

No, the real question is, why, if he had a seizure, did he get back in the vehicle and flee the scene, instead of waiting for medical attention.

I’m not a big cop fan, but they have developed a few gems of wisdom over the years that tend to hold up pretty well. One of them is: guilty people run.

Yes, and then he hit ANOTHER car a few minutes down the road in another township before being discovered unconscious by the police. If this was a seizure, they need to study him, because nobody in recorded medical history has ever had a seizure of this nature before.

No? “Thoughts” implies anything from positive vibes to ESP to concern. To paraphrase Flannery O’Connor, “the hell with ‘thoughts.’” If it’s mentioned WITH prayers, okay, I get it. If it’s mentioned INSTEAD of prayers, it’s downright offensive.

First I hope his health improves, if it is in fact health related. Second, and more interesting to me, is that no one knew this guy. You would think with the economy in this state, the Commerce Secretary would be more visible, active. This guy has brought zero value to the recovery.

There are some partial seizures that do leave you conscious, but altered. Then partial seizures can then become generalized into a full blown grand mal.

There is not a one size fits all with seizures.

I would think he would have an abnormal EEG if that was the case.

Also, do they know if he was on anti-seizure medication and forgot to take it. That can also trigger seizures.

Of course, all of this is frightening to me because my 15 year old daughter is about to start driving. We also are taking her off of meds because she hasn’t had a seizure in years. Seizures are scary.

if he had a seizure then it was post ictal confusion.

Did he “hit and run” or get out of the car, saw he hit someone and then ran? I don’t know the details, but if this was his first seizure, it could be serious or drug related. If it was his second seizure, he shouldn’t have been driving at all...

He hit the car, got out of the car, spoke to the other party, got back in his car, attempted to drive off, hit the first car again, fled the scene, drove a few minutes down the road, crashed again, and then was found unconscious at the second scene.

The Commerce Department spokesperson said he sufferd a seizure, and the Sheriff’s department spokesperson said they were told that he “suffers from a pre-existing medical condition”.

I’ve only had experience with someone with gran mal seizures, so I can’t comment too much on other varieties. Still, it would seem to me that, since he says it was pre-existing, it is his responsibility to either keep the condition under control, or not be driving.

They did take him to the hospital when they found him unconscious after his third collision, so I would bet they did an EEG. I’m a bit skeptical as to whether we will ever find out the results of that or any other details about that night which might be incriminating, considering who he is and the position he holds.

Seizures are scary, especially when they happen to someone you love, so I pray that your daughter remains well and won’t have to worry about them in the future.

As to the pre-existing condition. My daughter will always have this on her record also. She had seizures as a baby and then she had them when she was 10.

Legally, she can drive because she has had them under control many years.

In California the law says:

“No probation is needed for drivers who have achieved six or more months of control and there are no coexisting medication conditions that would aggravate the driver’s seizures or impair the driver’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. “

As a parent, do we let our daughter drive? That would be very difficult to not drive your entire adult life.

My personal opinion is to just make sure that people who have had seizures are very vigilant. Even more than other people, they should not drive if they have been drinking at all. They should not drive if they are sick or very tired.

My daughter may never have another seizure, and I don’t think she and others with epilepsy can live their lives so sheltered.

The chances of a wreck because of a seizure are probably slimmer than someone crashing because of alcohol or texting.

The laws let people drive with seizures if they are under control.

People can have multiple seizures without control, and then they find the right medication (or diet) and get them under control.

Also, seizures are more proned during puberty, and then once a person is out of puberty they stop having seizures.

Same thing with pregnancy and menopause. Anytime there are hormonal changes, the seizure threshold lowers.

After the hormonal levels have stabilized, the seizures stop.

I think that’s a pretty sensible position. You’ve just got to weigh the slim chance that the condition reappears against all the difficulties and things she might miss out on by being too cautious.

yes if you haven’t had seizures in a certain amount of time, you are allowed to drive.

But this was his first seizure according to reports...but there is a lot of confusion about the reports. Sounds like they are covering up something, but that doesn’t make sense if he just had a seizure.
