Obama's 2008 base is cracking: Gallup
IBD Editorials ^ | June 12, 2012 | ANDREW MALCOM

President Obama today is -- what else? -- fundraising again.

But while he's out, Gallup released a seriously ominous poll for the Democrat's chances of keeping his extended family in the White House for four more years.

Gallup finds a deep crack in Obama support emerging among whites, still statistically by far the largest group of voters. His support among several white subgroups is down 5% now among registered voters from what it was just before the 2008 election, when he easily defeated John McCain.

These sub-sets of non-Hispanic whites include young registered voters between 18 and 29, which provided him a huge margin four years ago, well-educated women and non-religious whites, among others. Other research has shown huge percentages of Obama's money donors from 2008 withholding their money this time.

The article is a little misleading. When they say Obama’s support dropped 5%, they are actually talking about it going from 51% to 46%. That’s actually more than a 10% drop.

You better use your calculator. 51-46=5

You’re probably right. Instead of from 51% to 41% they made it 46%

Instead of from 51% to 41% they made it 46%

Which they call a 'minor rounding error'.

And you need to brush up on your math...

51 down to 46 is more than a 10% drop:

((y2 - y1) / y1) * 100 = your percentage of change.

((51-46) / 46) * 100 = your percentage of change
((5) / 46) * 100 = your percentage of change
(.109) * 100 = your percentage of change
10.9% = your percentage of change

Therefore dropping from 51% to 46% equals a drop of 10.9%.

Math was never Gallup’s strong suit. Cooking the books for Dems always was.

Therefore dropping from 51% to 46% equals a drop of 10.9%.

I'm getting a percentage drop of 9.8039.

All you have to do is divide 51 by 5.

Correction. Divide 5 by 51=5/51=0.098039. Convert that to percent and it's 9.8039%

Here’s to a major war in the democrat party. Union goons rolling with black panthers in the streets, shots fired. MSNBC attacking cueball. zer0 poring hot coffee on slick. Hilda beast running her fat mouth at the convention while riots control the streets.

You’re more correct than Kaslin, however I think that you’re off a little also- the percentage of change must be measured against the original value- as in 51-46=5. 5/51=9.8%. In other words, if you have $100, and lose $20, then you’re down 20%- 20/100=0.20.

Well I’ll settle for 9.8% as opposed to 5%

The drop in his proportion of the vote in 2008 vs. now as reflected in this poll is 10 percent. In other words, mathematically Obama has lost roughly 10% of his previous support.

.51-.46 = 0.05

5/51 = 0.098 = 9.8% or rounding up 10%

5 is 10% of 50. So it is a 10% drop but a 5 point drop.

You maybe right. It is true that going from 51% to 46%
is a shift of 5%. The percentage change is 9.89%.
