Women Don't Belong in Ranger School
Wall Street Journal ^ | 6-12-12 | Stephen Kilcullen

The United States Army is debating whether to admit women to Ranger School, its elite training program for young combat leaders.

Proponents argue this is to remove a final impediment to the careers of Army women. But the move would erode the unique Ranger ethos and culture—not to mention the program's rigorous physical requirements—harming its core mission of cultivating leaders willing to sacrifice everything for our nation.

The Army's 75th Ranger Regiment traces its roots back to World War II, when it won acclaim for penetrating deep behind Japanese lines. Founded in 1950, Ranger School teaches combat soldiers small-unit tactics and leadership under extreme duress. It pushes men harder than any other program in the Army's curriculum.

Competition to attend the course is fierce, with about 4,000 men eligible to attend each year. Only about half graduate. Of those, only 20% make it through without having to retake various phases.

For decades, completion of Ranger School has been the best indicator for determining which young men can handle the enormous responsibility of combat leadership

I imagine she would be the first to agree that she couldn’t do all that her guys could do on the physical level. But by being a female - she also served a very important role that none of the guys could.

Which is exactly the point, I'm sure her fellow soldiers felt the same way.

How do costs go up by allowing an eligible f soldier to compete against an eligible m soldier in Ranger School?

Let her try and fail. When she fails, she will then not be serving with the Rangers, SEALs or any other Special Forces.

In my youth there were God Damned few males who could better me. They tried and they failed.

Like you they were not only ignorant they were arrogant. But me being a God Damned cunning female managed to beat them at their game not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. They went home with their tales between their legs.

The military cannot afford to play games with soldiering, nor with slots to schools that are already far too rare, you probably don't know that many Rangers already do not get to go to Ranger school because there are too few slots, same with HALO, and HAHO, Submarine insertions, International LRRP School, cross training with their counterparts in the SAS, 13th Regiment, the Danes and on and on and on.

The military elites are desperate for more training, the last thing they need is to dilute it and introduce more ticket punchers, and in the case of females, the end of excellance.

By the way when you were young and fiercely defeating all the men of the world, was any of that in the military?

Feminism is not conservatism honey.....never has been and never will be.

Advocating more social engineering in the military based on fairness, changing times and a one in a thousand exception creates no advantage for anyone but the enemy

It is an indulgence of a civilization fat and soft in its decline

.....when that nation sending mothers to fight while young men sit at home smoking dope playing video games or watching reality TV

it is nothing short of absolutely disgusting......those exceptions notwithstanding

You obviously have been nowhere near a conflict or serious sustained violence

The only nations that sacrifice their females so are desperate ones historically.....the sorts who arm 12 year old boys...

I was young, I listened to people like you and believed that the Military was no place for women. I was a fool. BTW, I only defeated the mediocre males, not the great ones. : )

So you refused to serve when you were 100% totally free to do so, and now you are still anti-military, except that now you are using leftist politics to support your bitterness at the American military?

And you blame it on me?

wardaddy, thank you for your post. I am not advocating social engineering. You are mistaken.

What I am saying is to allow only the eligible Soldiers to apply for Ranger School should they wish to apply. If they fail they fail. You have a problem with that?

You are correct I have been nowhere near a conflict or sustained violence. But neither were many of the Soldiers who landed on Omaha Beach.

I guess it is only OK for men to fight for their country, their way of life, their family. I guess the women folk get to stay home, wait for that damned phone call....

“When as kids as soon as the boys were seeing we were winning they started to change the rules.”

Ummmmm...they didn’t change the rules because you were “winning.” They changed them because you couldn’t measure up to the men’s standards. That was feminazi writ large.

Travis, one of my dearest friends is a three time purple heart recipient (two of his wounds should have killed him) in Viet Nam, and a Ranger. He’s a compact man, but one of the sweetest, most thoughtful, guys, and one of the biggest badass men I’ve ever met.

“We weren’t in the same class as the guys. Enjoy your delusion.”

So, you didn’t compete with the men?

I don’t think it’s Travis McGee who is delusional.

You have to be offered something to refuse it.

“You have to be offered something to refuse it.”

No...you have to sign up, and apply. Then, you have to prove yourself.

They don’t “offer” anything unless, and until, you’ve passed muster.

Large soldiers can talk all day long about how strong and tough small male soldiers are, it is something to see and they tend to be tough as nails.

By the way, I don’t know the current American wisdom, but long muscled, less bulky soldiers used to be seen (generally) as the most successful for Special Operations units.
