President Barack Obama delivered a campaign speech on Thursday that was billed as an effort to refocus on the economy and to frame the debate against Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney moving forward. But a panel of liberal commentators on MSNBC reacting to the speech unanimously felt the President had wasted the opportunity to truly make an impact on the race.
I thought this, honestly, was one of the least successful speeches I’ve seen Barack Obama give in several years,” said Newsweek editor Jonathan Alter. “It was long winded. He had a good argument to make, and at the beginning of the speech he seemed to be making it in a fairly compelling way but then he lost the thread.”
Alter said he thought the speech was “way too long” and Obama had “lost the audience by the end.”
Daily Beast columnist and economist Zachary Karabell agreed with Alter, saying that the President opened the speech well, but quickly lost the plot.
MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall attempted to clarify the President’s points for her panelists, seeing that the conversation was rapidly spiraling into pointedly off-message territory.
UPDATE: Jonathan Alter appears to be taking heat for his insufficient support of Obama following his Ohio campaign speech. Not long after his appearance on MSNBC, Alter tweeted this:

The Left foisted off a man completely unqualified to be president, and succeeded in getting him elected because he was Black.
So stupid was this jackass, that he couldn’t deliver even a short talk without screwing up big-time, unless he could read the thing word for word.

His speeches were always this idiotic, but now while the media can still lie about how sharp he is, you can’t fool the average person who can’t fail but see how lame this president truly is. That’s making the Left look positively vile. It’s making it so Obama hasn’t a prayer of being re-elected.
The folks that were lying to cover his ass, are now angry that he’s that stupid. They’re not only angry that he is that stupid, but he has put them and the election in jeopardy. They are angry because the guy that was going to usher in the new version of the U. S. S. R. here, has revealed that plan for the disgusting nation destroying plan that it always was, and always will be.
Socialism doesn’t work. Europe is crumbling in no small part because of it’s attraction to socialism. Obama wants to install Europe’s game plan here. The public doesn’t want it.
ObamaCare is going down. His economic plans are going down. The nation as a whole is going down. And sadly, this ass-hat hasn’t got a single clue.
We are months before the next election, and Obama is still telling everyone that Bush made such a mess of things, he (Obama) is over his head and can’t fix it.
