President Kirchner: "How can it be claimed that this territory is part of Britain?"
Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has demanded that Britain enter negotiations over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.
President Fernandez was addressing the UN Committee on Decolonisation on the 30th anniversary of the UK territory's liberation from Argentine occupation.
She said history and geography backed Argentina's claim. But an islander told the committee Argentina was "bullying".
UK Prime Minister David Cameron has said there would be "no negotiation".
Earlier on Thursday, the Falklands marked the end Argentina's 74-day 1982 occupation with a service at Port Stanley's Christ Church cathedral.
Veterans of the war then led a military parade to the Liberation Monument for an act of remembrance, paying tribute to the 255 UK servicemen and three Falklands civilians who died in the war.
An estimated 650 Argentines were also killed during the conflict.

It seems Argentina’s claim is based on proximity so I’m sure they will be claiming the whole continent because it’s close.
Well, how could Cuba not be part of the United States ?
Not that close. The Falkland Islands are over 200 miles from the coastline of Argenitna.
The islanders want no part of Argentina, but Argentina want the pertroleum in the seabed that surrounds the Falkland Islands.
The claim is driven, IMO, by greed.
The Fakland island didn’t belong to anyone since noone lived there til the Europeans decided to settle there
We have a much better claim to Cuba than Argentina has to the Falklands. Cuba once belonged tu the U.S.A. as a prize of War with Spain. Argentina never possessed the Falklands and as I said above, the islands are outside the 200 mile territorial limit of Argentina.
“The claim is driven, IMO, by greed.”
And internal politics... She’s managed to make Argentina a basket case again, and is just looking for political cover by distracting the sheeple with jingoistic talk.
The British are sitting on a massive oil/natural gas situation with the Falklands. There’s no doubt that they will stand their ground and may have to fight off another attack within ten years. I might even go out on the limb and predict by 2025 that half of all British military assets/personnel will be on the Falklands by that point.
El Presidente Zer0 want negotiations over the ‘Maldives’ (his words ) question. :^)
Negotiations were concluded 30 yrs. ago.
The fun never stops on the British Empire...
...what’s left of it, that is.
“I might even go out on the limb and predict by 2025 that half of all British military assets/personnel will be on the Falklands by that point.”
That really depends on the Argentinians. They are far less capable of launching an invasion now than they were in 1982 and the island is far better defended. With the permanent presence of a Daring class destroyer, an Astute class sub with tomahawks, a Vanguard class with Trident II and the land based Falklands Defence Force and Falklands based Typhoons, Argentina is going to have to spend vast amounts of money they don’t have to even attempt an invasion. Even if they started saving up now, in a couple of years we’ll have the new Elizabeth class carriers with F35’s on board which I doubt they’ll fancy their chances against in some aging French aircraft.
My money is on them being all talk, but if I’m wrong we’re well prepared for them.
Must be severe problems in Argentina if the gub mint is rehashing this issue.
Anything to take the folks mind off their current dificulties???
All they really need to keep Argentina out is to commit one SSN, and have the will to use it on Argentinian shipping.
They have seven.
If you’re not familiar with the end of the General Belgrano, you should be.
I’d love to take back Cuba. Great fishing, diving and it is quite beautiful.
Only problem with taking back Cuba is all those damn worthless Cubans who have grown up knowing nothing but communism would still be there.
Your two posts well-summarize what is behind this story.
I don’t think the danger so much is about them acting alone, but if they manage to build up South American alliance, including countries such as Brazil, which are on the rise to take back the Falklands.
In the long term, Argentina has more potential to be a richer and more powerful country than Britain because of its resource base. If they ever get their crap together and started acting a fraction more anglo-saxon we’d be in trouble...
Possibly, though I suspect other South American countries enthusiasm for unity with Argentina will stumble when countries like the UK stop buying from them. A resource base is no use if you can’t sell any of it to the richer countries because of embargoes placed on you for threatening little islands full of sheep who want to stay British. :)
If the Brits were smart they’d already have a highly skilled sniper already positioned in Argentina just waiting for orders.
My understanding is that in the last 50 years or so Argentina has descended from being a quite prosperous and stable nation to being just another Third World banana republic.
Base a coupla SSNs or SSBNs there and a squadron or two of fighters. Mebbie a coupla new destroyers.
THEN DRILL FOR OIL.
Then again, the future looks pretty bleak in the long term for Britain and Europe. Who is to say in 25 years time that the relative power and prosperity of the EU region and South America will not be reversed? China has already demonstrated that it is more sympathetic to the Argentinian cause, and all their English language publications refer to the islands as ‘the Malvinas’. As for the US, well, we have seen how reliable they are as an ally in the last couple of years, and they are also in relative decline...
La Raza, Aztlan, Reconquista, Hispano-Racism....Argentine style
The British people on the Falklands do not wish to be Argentine, Hispanic, Americana del Sur, or whatever
Even though this woman has a German name....she is pushing Hispano-Racism,front and center
