GOP Sen. Rubio says deportation leniency is 'welcome news'

A GOP senator on the short list to be Mitt Romney's running mate is applauding President Obama's move to forgo deportations for some illegal immigrants.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said the more lenient policy is "welcome news" for those immigrants who will benefit, though he was quick to knock the administration for acting unilaterally.

“Today’s announcement will be welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer, but it is a short term answer to a long term problem," the Cuban-American Rubio said in a statement. "And by once again ignoring the Constitution and going around Congress, this short term policy will make it harder to find a balanced and responsible long term one.”

Rubio's comments are a stark contrast to those coming from other Republicans, who are blasting the new rules as a threat to U.S. jobs and possibly illegal.

Rubio's remarks also further complicate the position of GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who took a hard conservative stance against illegal immigrants amid the heat of the GOP primary but is now searching for ways to soften that stance in order to appeal to Hispanic voters, who will be vital in a number of swing states.

The bigger issue, which should be screamed by Republicans, is that Obama has no respect for separation of powers or the Constitution, that he’s a power-grabber.

I completely agree with you.

The real problem is Obama's continued usurpation of the powers of the legislative and judicial branches. While anti-immigrant folks go apoplectic over the immigration issue (without regard for the fact that this may be the only reasonable compromise anyway), they will raise enough noise that the rise of the dictatorship will get overlooked.

Isn’t that what multiculturalism and diversity is all about?

Holder has “his people”, Rubio has “his people” and the mooslims have theirs, etc.

And when the SHTF there will be a large number of ethnic groups all trying to claw and fight their way to a position from where they can survive.

Epluribus what?

All of you people that promoted this open border, Constitution shredding, racist pimp for mexico should apologize for every nice thing that you ever said about him. This is an fundamental issue that goes right to the heart of the US Constitution and the RULE OF LAW. There is no rationalization of this issue... just illegal and unconstitutional tyranny... and this jerk likes it. FU rubio!

I’m not sure that any of you read the original quote. Rubio said it was “welcome news” to those kids; not to Americans, Republicans, or him.

Cmon. Even the writer characterized Rubio's comments as a stark contrast to other GOP figures condemning the EO.

This whole thing by Obama is just a clarion call for the next gushing wave of illegals to come pouring over the border.

Here comes the gushing wave of illegals.

They are not going to want to miss the amnesty that Obama will give them either in his second term or during his lame-duck session.

Well that was a short-lived career. Romney is doing well right now and if he wants to win this he’d better distance himself from Rubio and Jeb. If he jumps on this band wagon, he’s toast.

He is the elected representative of American citizens.

He is not the elected representative of illegal aliens.

His first concern on the issue should not be for what is welcome news for illegals, what makes illegals happy or what is "fair" for illegals.

His concern and obligation as a Senator should be for the law, his oath of office, the taxpayers who have had to foot the bill for illegals' welfare, health care, schooling, etc., the people who would fill the jobs vacated by illegals, the Americans who have to compete with illegals for jobs, college slots, etc.

This was an opportunity for him to speak out for those who elected him, for taxpayers and for the law of the land. He failed.

The best thing Republicans can do from this point is declare:

“NOW IT’S TIME TO CLOSE THE BORDER!”

Don’t bother trying to fight this battle, just move on to the next battle, in this war.

I am not sure that, outside of the military, anyone in Washington will help defend our nation. Are they all traitors? Most likely.

Rubio is playing right into Obamas’ “Rope a dope” strategy.

Well, it worked on one dope from South Florida!

If Romney picks Rubio as his running mate it will guarantee Obama a second term.

Not what he said, at all. Only what you wished he said.

LOL. you are either very young or naive. I have been around long enough to know exactly how politicians think.

Rubio is 100% in favor of EVERY illegal eventually getting citizenship. He can't come out and say it, but that is exactly the end result of the policies that Rubio supports.

Rubio wants to be President one day (it is obvious) Rubio knows he will need the votes of tens of millions of illegal third world socialists. Hence, the nuanced statements that Rubio spews.

Rubio is like 99.9% of every other politician -- opportunistic slime.

I hope Romney will cross this panderer from Florida off the potential VP list. Romney could make fewer bigger mistakes than to stick someone on the ticket with him that would immediately, by his presence, reopen the rift among Republican voters that caused some much harm during W’s years of pushing amnesty for illegals.

Forget Rubio.

Rubio has been pretty clear where he comes down on this.. He wasn't very clear on anything related to illegal aliens before he won a senate seat. He has gradually become more clear since winning.
