Brown, Warren Scrap Over Native American Controversy
By Jonathan Miller and Matt Vasilogambros | National Journal
Thu, Jun 14, 2012

In a fight to keep his Senate seat in Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown lashed out Thursday at Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, saying she failed the test of “truthfulness and credibility and honesty” as evidenced by her past claims about her Native American heritage.

On Fox News, Brown responded to a statement Warren made about him being too cozy with Wall Street: “When you're running for elective office … you have to pass a test and the test is about truthfulness and credibility and honesty. And quite frankly she's failed that test as evidenced by her claiming to be a Native American and checking the box and making misrepresentations to not only Harvard but Penn.

He added: “She can rewrite her own history but she can’t rewrite mine.”

There is no controversy.

We have researched Ms. Warren’s ancestry in the line she claims to be Cherokee through, as well as researched the collateral lines connected to that family. There is absolutely no indication of her having anything other than Caucasian ancestors. Though Ms. Warren’s ancestors did move into the areas that later became Oklahoma, they arrived at the same time many other non-Indian families arrived – when the land was going to be opened up and they thought they could get free or cheap land from the Indians. Ms. Warren’s ancestors were not Cherokees and neither is she. We, as Cherokees, cannot allow Ms. Warren to continue on with her false claims. If we allow someone as high profile as her to get away with it, then everyone else will expect a free pass as well.

I want to hear her answer when somebody asks:

Did your adult children use the Native American designation on applications for college, grad school, scholarships, and employment?

I am disappointed that nobody is using Warren to address the larger question of Affirmative Action, specifically, when will it ever end?
How many “protected classes” will we have?
How do we quantify the amount of “past discrimination” that it takes to have a present-day grievance?
How much AA is required to make up for ancestors’ pain and suffering?
How much “proof” does it take to qualify? Certainly by now we must have a more sophisticated taxonomy system than the old South Africa.

By the way, I have discovered that I have a teensy bit of Neanderthal DNA. That ought to be worth something.
