Romney Screws the Pooch on Immigration
National Review ^ | 6-15-2012 | Mark Krikorian

Posted on 06/15/2012 8:14:40 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

Okay, maybe that wasn’t the best metaphor, but he fumbled an important opportunity. The problem with the president’s amnesty decree is not that it “makes it more difficult to reach that long-term solution because an executive order is, of course, just a short-term matter — it can be reversed by subsequent presidents.” The problem is that it’s u-n-c-o-n-s-t-i-t-u-t-i-o-n-a-l. You would expect Allen West and Steve King to be forceful in denouncing this usurpation, but even Amnesty John McCain and Rick “you don’t have a heart” Perry were strong. Heck, Lindsey Graham — Lindsey Graham — denounced the move as “possibly illegal.” And the fact that Romney didn’t answer when asked if he’d reverse the order is an especially bad sign.

I know all those who’ve been accusing me of being in the tank for Romney will say “I told you so,” but my distress isn’t really about his views on the policy issue at hand — he seemed to endorse Rubio’s as-yet-not-introduced revision of the DREAM Act, which I’m pretty sure I won’t like. I’m appalled because this is a fundamental matter of our political order

I should add that my basic outrage is over abuse of power. But as usual my low opinion of voter interest in any abstraction above sports analysis leads me to agree with a more tangible approach.

I expected better from Team Romney. Not that I think Romney has any real principled stand on the issue (I don’t) but just because this is such a great opportunity to slam Hussein. For the last few weeks TR has been sparring relentlessly and to good effect. Today Hussein led with his chin and Romney missed a great chance to send him to the moon. Mitt can make it up on Sunday, but hitting back hard today would have been much better.

Hell, a vote for Romney is a vote for liberal policies, so why should anyone be surprised that he doesn’t jump on this highly legal decree. Of course, Romney may be likely to come to out with a statement, but only after the polling data is in.

You’re missing the point. The day belongs to Obama and the democrats. This is about the statist dictator and mob rule. Will congress stand up and confront him or ket it go? I don’t have a desire to be Romney’s cheering section but he has been on offense and totally focused on the economy, jobs, taxes, Obama’s all out failure and division of the country. Doesn’t sound like he’s playing prevent defense to me. Why would he allow Obama to take him off message now? Have you seen the Rasmussen numbers this week? There is a long way to go and he is not only taking on Obama and the Leftist Democrats, but also the entire leftist media. Right now the media is scrambling to cover Obama’s sorry butt and they aren’t doing a good job of it.

Obama is in panic mode with this move and it is already backfiring. I will agree with you that Romney is not a great candidate but he is playing offense in this race.

given Mitt’s nature he might send the attack dogs first. I will be listening to see if he responds in the manner he probably should. Or is he responds at all.

This was a huge flunk on Mitt's part. Conservatives are already worried that he's not made of the right stuff, and many are looking to his record (which is decidedly liberal) to gauge the man.

A weak and incorrect answer on a subject so near and dear to the hearts of conservatives, just fuels the perception that he's far from being in alignment with patriotic, conservative America, whom he MUST draw to him, if he's going to win this thing.

Too many more oopsies like this, and he'll lose more of the conservative vote than he can afford to.

“candidates for POTUS must calculate. That’s the stupid reality of the game.”

The Obamunist Democrat plan, ALL ALONG, has been to create chaos, division, and racial tension. They NEED the Hispanics in the street and p**sed off, like they were in 2006, if Obama has any chance at all to win.

according to YouTube clip, Reagan says he believes in the idea of amnesty.
How about Romney state that he believes in a comprehensive review of our immigration policy towards the Mexicans, because that’s what we are talking about, and then come up with some suggestions. Because, the sooner we get this resolved, the sooner the brown catholic bretheren to the south will help shore up or Judeo Christian believes and national security versus accommodating non traditional influences out of fear of appearing religiously intolerate.

Being the former governor of California, I think he would be more comfortable visiting a catholic Hispanic household versus a socialist atheist household. No doubt a work and living visa needs to be clarified and scrutinized. But what do we do with the 14 million illegally here? That is the question.

Reagan believed in amnesty with a hell of a lot of controls, if you listen to his ytube and all his follow-up legislation attempts you can see this.

Yep, Sarah Palin was stopped by of all people Politico and asked off the stage about Obama’s unconstitutional grab and she responded clearly and concise that does not needed to be handled by staffers and advisors unlike people around here making excuses for Mitt not being prepared for a response:

“Our president still doesn’t understand the three branches of government,” she said. “He thinks he can usurp the Congressional branch of our government and dictate and mandate a policy like this.”

She took umbrage about an explanation she read in the press that said the law would only affect “law-abiding illegal immigrants.”

“That is a contradiction right there,” she said in the interview. “I think we need to characterize it and describe it more accurately. It’s called illegal for a reason.”

I don’t know enough about immigration law to make an informed decision, but I suspect most legislators never contemplated a president who would use emergency and/or discretion clauses to such an extent. So maybe immigration law does give the president the authority to amnesty hard immigration cases. The people who wrote that probably did not imagine a president like Obama would come along and use every conceivable loophole for political purposes.

That said, I know the difference between following the spirit of a law and the law itself. Legalists love to do the same thing with scripture. If Christ didn’t specifically state, “For the record, I oppose abortion,” then legalists can (and DO!) say Christ is OK with abortion. But we know immigration law was never intended to permit this, and even if it’s legally OK, we aren’t dummies. We know Congress has been try to reach a democratic compromise on this. They would have certainly passed something had there been a true mandate from We the People to do so.

I guess the emperor grew impatient when he wasn’t playing golf.

You cannot paint a rosy picture of this... romney looked like a deer caught in headlights today... he allowed his weakness to be seen... the weakness of a lack of true Conservative core philosophy... and a true leader NEVER allows any weakness to be seen... not during an election. The time for romney to respond has come and gone. Anything that he says from this point on will be nothing but damage control. Many who despise romney but were warming to his attacks on obama during the past two weeks, have just had all of their fears and reservations concerning romney reinforced... and romney cannot reverse that... he hurt himself badly with the base today and the following weeks will prove it. Do not be surprised to see obamao go above 50% in the polls next week and romney to fall into the low 40’s or high 30’s. This was all so predictable... and it will get much worse as the election nears.

As the title says, Mitt screwed the pooch with his clueless, pandering comment today. All eyes on the right have suddenly turned to him, and lots of them now have raised eyebrows.

He'd better get in front of the citizen outrage in a hurry, and demand that Obama cancel the E.O., or demand that Congress begin impeachment hearings.

At the very least, he's got to immediately begin echoing the right on this. Obama just shredded the law and the Constitution with this illegal act, and he's got to say that. Repeatedly, and with passion (well, at least as much as he can muster without mussing his hair).

My personal expectations run quite low about him doing what he needs to do.

Why would he allow Obama to take him off message now?

Off message? His 'message' is supposed to reflect his accord with a majority of the American people, our traditions, laws, and Constitution.

It's also supposed to be responsive to unfolding events. People need to see leadership, and there's no better way to do that when challenging an incumbent president, than a crack-fire, correct response to his missteps and blunders.

Romney was crack-fire, alright, but with precisely the WRONG response.

Since Myth, sadly, is the chosen one..the others in the party will do the dirty work so he won’t have to come out and and make a difinitive statement. Heck...he might incriminate himself if he does. It happened during the primary...it is happening now.

Even if impeachment proceedings were brought against the One in the House (not likely) they would never be confirmed in the Senate.

I read what was posted here, but I didn't follow the link because I don't need a reporter to do my thinking for me, or to interpret this event. I'm more than capable of doing that for myself.

Romney gave the wrong response today. That is the bottom line. He proved that he's a left-leaning moderate, who's entirely comfortable with Congress passing some sort of legislation that gives a form of legality to the children of illegals (who were born outside this country).

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, responded appropriately, and immediately. She rightfully condemned Obama for what he's done, and called him on the carpet for blatant pandering to Hispanics for their votes:

Palin: Obama 'pandering' on immigration

Sarah showed real leadership, not calculated political side-stepping, like Mitt.

I don’t think Romney blew it, but he’s definitely making it a much closer race than it should be. Jimmy Carter was more of a real president than Obama can be, and that’s saying something. This election should be a total blow out. The president lied to get elected. He played the moderate, hope and change stuff to the limit, and the media covered for him. Now, however, you’d have to be living under a rock to not know how radical and un-American Obama really is. He’s got the illegal immigrant, radical feminist, homosexual, and prole votes, but he’s even pissing off evangelical blacks. Now if Romney was a decent candidate...ah...but we know he’s a joke. The question is, is he a bigger joke than Obama? I’d say no.

They already blew it when the moderates and party establishment types (I repeat myself) pushed Romney across the nomination finish line. I hate to say it, but the presidency is lost to conservatives for at least four more years and probably more. Romney will likely win only because Obama is THAT bad, but Romney seems totally incapable of making the hard decisions to save this country. That’s the political reality as I see it. On a good note, I don’t think this can go on much longer. We are indeed a wealthy nation, but sooner or later government will indeed by broke. I would have preferred a soft landing, but I think the die is cast my FRiend.

Governor Romney took the action to ban automatic weapons in Massachusetts, or so I’ve read here on FR. That action was condemned here on this site as unconstitutional.

If the the above statement is true, then his response to BHO2’s unconstitutional move per amnesty is an indication of how he, Rommey, would govern as President.

ROMNEY WOULD NOT BE MUCH DIFFERENT THAN OBAMA!

Is it possible that a victorious (or perhaps, even worse) a defeated Willard "Mitt" Romney would, as Shakespeare wrote, "Cry Havoc, and Unleash the Dogs of War" against his post-2012 election opponents ?

Can we look to the experiences of Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich, to foretell what dire fate that Free Republic might harvest, should Mitt Romney turn his evil malice against his "Conservative Opposition" ?

Western writers have long ago uncovered the Islamic philosophy that "Lying to the Infidels" is a blessed and worthy practice , directly encouraged by Allah.

Narrated Ka'b ibn Malik: When the Prophet (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) intended to go on an expedition, he always pretended to be going somewhere else, and he would say: War is deception.

One of the Mormon's most embarrassing secrets is the tightly-covered-up Mormon-LDS scandal surrounding the CENSORSHIP and DESTRUCTION of the "Nauvoo Expositioner" newspaper in 1844.

Perhaps this frightening episode sheds some light on "why" some Mormon figures (such as Joseph Smith) will go to any length to protect their Earthly Wealth and Power.

Is Willard "Mitt" Romney ... cut from the same "moral cloth" (deceptive and violent) as Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Cult ?

"The Nauvoo Expositor Affair [Death of Mormon Joseph Smith]" has recently been discussed at Free Republic, for those who wish to learn more about this exceeding dark episode in Mormon history.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/2893840/posts

An Executive Summary would show that a powerful and wealthy and terribly emotional insecure cult dictator (reminiscent of the murderous Jim Jones), Joseph Smith ...

violently attempted to exterminate even the mere public discussion of his policies, allegations of fraud, and abuse of power ...

even within the very "church" that he had (allegedly) miraculously founded.

Joseph Smith turned violently on fellow Mormons who had stood loyally and valiantly at Smith's side for over a decade, through the hardest of times ...

If that was how Joseph Smith treated his "best of friends" in the LDS faith ...

how then were Joseph Smith's "enemies" treated ?

Far worse, to be sure.

Which leads an inquiring mind to Willard "Myth" Romney ...

a self-proclaimed "Celestial God-Child from the Planet Kolob, located in the heavenly Constellation Cancer" ...

A man of great wealth ($ 150 million estimated personal fortune) and clear aspirations to power ... great power.

Was Mitt Romney following Joseph Smith's "politically violent" example when Mitt Romney attempted (behind-the-scenes) to politically destroy political opponents Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich ?

Many say that Romney followed Joseph Smith ... "perfectly".

So what fate then, does ANYONE who stands in opposition (at the smallest level) to Willard Romney ... share ?

What about independent Conservative Journalists such as Michelle Malikin, Shawn Hannity, Andrew Breibart (were he still alive) ?

What about independent Conservative Websites ?

Would Romney attempt their clandestine destruction ...

just as Joseph Smith violently DESTROYED "The Nauvoo Expositor" newspaper, published by Joseph Smith's most loyal and trusted friends ?

And what (indeed) happens when the (still powerful) assets of the FBI, CIA, NSA, NRO are handed over to the CONTROL of a "faithful mormon" ...

who believes that the VENGEFUL and MURDEROUS and EVIL Joseph Smith was a "saint" ... or worse still ... a self-proclaimed anti-christ "god" ...

These assets ( FBI, CIA, NSA, NRO) placed in the Greedy and Narcissistic fingers of "Myth" Romney ...

just as Joseph Smith was ...

a "Celestial God-Child from the Planet Kolob"?

If they want to vote for Romney, they can go right on ahead but its a waste of time trying to convince me that he’s some kind of conservative.

If they had even a few brain cells working, they would encourage us to get out there and vote for our candidate of choice for no other reason than to save the more important house and senate races.
