One idea universally understood by the founding fathers was that representative government depended on the level of virtue in the electorate. Many of them spoke with eloquence on this, incidentally citing the necessity to the life of the Republic of broad freely available education-- which to them meant inculcation of democratic virtues as well as general knowledge.

Absolutely right and today we have college graduates who majored in history because they figured it was the easiest degree to obtain and they don’t know the history that used to be required learning in the first eight years of school. Small wonder that people are sucked into voting for socialistic schemes, they don’t even know that all these “new ideas” are just recycled failures from the past.
