Skip to comments.US enlists Britain's help to stop ship 'carrying Russian attack helicopters' to Syria

The MV Alaed, a Russian-operated cargo vessel, is currently thought to be sailing through the North Sea after allegedly picking up a consignment of munitions and MI25 helicopters - known as "flying tanks" - from the Russian Baltic port of Kaliningrad.
Washington, which last week condemned Moscow for continuing to arm the Syrian regime, has asked British officials to help stop the Alaed delivering its alleged cargo by using sanctions legislation to force its London-based insurer to withdraw its cover.
Under the terms of the current European Union arms embargo against Syria, imposed in May last year, there is a ban on the "transfer or export" of arms and any related "brokering" services such as insurance. Withdrawal of a ship's insurance cover would make it difficult for it legally to dock elsewhere and could force it to return the cargo to port.

Really? I can surely see Putin worrying about his insurance policies...lol
A blockade is an act of war, yes?
Really? Maybe they should make Obama publicly acknowledge that the Falklands belong to the UK first.
Evacuate all Christians and let the remaining muslims have at each other till there is one left standing.
Give him some hummus and tell him to go to Iraq.
The British Navy is going to block a Putin military cargo vessel?
That’ll be the day.
Replay of the Cuban Missile Crisis...NOT!
That or a good time for a laxative....!
re: “Really? I can surely see Putin worrying about his insurance policies...lol”
Exactly. This is Obama standing tall against Russian aggression?? Withdrawing insurance for the weapons??
What a joke we are to Putin. He’s already got Obama’s number and knows he could do anything he wants and our government will stand by and let him do it - except maybe Obama might send Putin a very stern letter.
On the other hand, if Obama actually sent some of our ships to block Putin’s what would Obama do if we found it?
He’ll have to take the Churchill bust back into the WH first...and then exchange the crappy gifts he gave to the Queen for something more appropriate...oh yeah, and then say; “pretty please, Your Highness”...LMAO!! Whadda jerk!!!
Suppose this ship accidentally disappeared in the middle of the ocean due to a massive internal explosion? That would be a real shame.
That would be a shame. In a rational world we would support Russia with Syria in return for Russia supporting us with Iran.
Not always. In the modern world, the UN is often the arbiter of when a blockade is an act of war or not.
The U.N. is not an arbiter of anything in my world.
"Mr. President, we have a foreign policy crisis!"
"Really? Let me talk to the insurance companies ..."
"Mr. President, Lindsay Lohan was found unconscious in her hotel room!"
"Really? Let me talk to the insurance companies ..."
This does have a Geico commercial written all over it....lol
Those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.
Hitler was selling tanks and planes (which he claimed he didn’t have) to one side of each neighboring country that was involved in civil wars. His goal was complete takeover.
The US and Britain were aware of it, yet didn’t want to get involved, and possibly start WWII.
You know the rest of the story.
But in the real world they have been given that power by many countries. This was the rationale for the Korean “police action” that was not a “war”.
Meanwhile, has anyone noticed the nice picture in the Telegraph article is actually a POLISH helicopter?
Funny. Just posted on another thread about Russian arms shipments to Syria.
Similar comments would apply here, but I’ll just say this is funny. Imagine getting the news on the ship.
“Yuri, we need to talk. There is a problem with Lloyds.”
“What is problem Ivan? I have a ship to run here. Insurance is your department.”
“That’s just it. There’s no insurance. Lloyds canceled on us.”
“Americans. Annoyed at cargo, they made some phone calls and threw us the finger.”
“Goddamit.” (Russian swearing follows). “We were planning on having that bilge retrofit done in port as part of on-voyage damage! Now you’re telling me we can’t file claim and I’m going to smell this damn thing all the way back home as well?”
I’m sure that the midlevel functionaries that orchestrate the superpower proxy fights have some really fun moments from time to time.
serious provacation. More on the story:
Total amateur hour.
Story is of a different ship. Odd though and thanks for bringing that to my attention.
Perhaps a diversion so the private container ship makes safe passage?
Either way you are right....Bungles of Obama continue!
Since you know helicopters...
I thought the concept of attack helicopters came to a brutal end in the last Iraqi War?
I recall an air battle where like 20 USA choppers massed for an attack and almost every one of them sustained serious damage or was shot down.
Obviously, attack choppers against untrained rebels would be successful.
But are sovereign armies still betting on this idea?
But Russia is supporting both Syria and Iran, just to give us trouble.
Well, it’s an Mi-25 with Polish national markings. I doubt the Poles build their own Mi-25s.
Follow my tagline to cause Russia more problems than they can handle. It’s time to Regan them again.
