A WOMAN zookeeper was mauled to death by a pack of wolves as she fed them in their enclosure.
Eight of the wolves are thought to have surrounded and attacked the woman, who was in her 30s.
Her body was found by a colleague — but the snarling pack would not let anyone near her. Eventually brave zoo workers formed a human chain and rushed the wolves, forcing them back.
Jan Tengeborg, who organised the attempt to recover the body, said: “We couldn’t get into the enclosure because the wolves clearly did not want us in there. You can’t just walk right into a wolf pack.”
No one witnessed the attack so it is not yet clear exactly what triggered it. The dead woman has not been named.
The same pack attacked TV naturalist Arne Weise when Kolmarden Wildlife Park opened in Braviken Bay, Sweden, in 2007.
He said yesterday: “We have to stop interacting so closely with wolves. It is wrong, the risk is too great. We must recognise they are dangerous animals.”
Armed police were called to the zoo but did not open fire. Mats Höggren, director at Kolmarden — where earlier this year a girl of 15 was bitten on the leg by a wolf — said: “This is is terrible.
“She was alone in the wolves’ yard but had contact with a colleague via two-way radio.
“The colleague thought she had been gone longer than usual, so investigated and found her body.” He said the animals would not be put down.
And then there is prey.

We think that we may have wolves in our neighborhood. They could be coyotes that were bred with huskies, but they have taken on all the attributes of a pack of wolves.
I’ve been looking up wolves and coyotes (these look more like wolves, they don’t have that triangular face and narrow nose of a coyote and they are actually lighter in color. At least the one that I saw in my yard was very light). Everything that I have read says that coyotes are lone hunters and cannot take down a deer. We have seen several deer, stripped to the bare bone.
We do have coyotes. We hear them, but what we saw did not look like a deer.

Understandable. Wolves do not like people taking away their food. Even some dogs will snarl at you if you mess with them while they are eating.
This was not a good way to go.
I am glad the Swedes followed all Darwinian protocols, ceding the body to the superior animal.
No, they recovered it.

That right there is the problem. Once wolves have realized they can kill and eat humans, it’s almost inevitable that they will try it again if they see the opportunity. The pack should have been destroyed after the first attack.
The 30-year-old woman had entered the wolf enclosure at Kolmarden park, in the Ostergotland district, alone at about 11am when the deadly incident happened.It is understood that visitors to the zoo then witnessed the horrific attack.
Emergency services could not enter the enclosure while the woman was being mauled for fear of being attacked themselves.
Emergency services co-ordinator, Jan Tengeborg, told Aftonbladet newspaper: 'You can’t just go in to a pack of wolves. Police and ambulance staff couldn’t get close to the victim until later.'
Very sad. I’m sure that women loved those wolves.
A reminder not to project human emotions onto wild animals.
I always find it difficult to feel much sympathy for people who knowingly approach packs of wild animals, especially when the pack had already given notice of its propensity to attack humans. Never the less it was a fellow human so R.I.P.
Too bad she didn’t read this book first. Excellent read, I highly recommend it.
