Russian battleships?!? What, did they raise the hulk of the Stalingrad and finish it?

Russia has no battleships. It does have 3 modified Kirov class cruisers, which are arguably nuclear battlecruisers. I say so in defference to their tonnage (20,000 tons) and missile armament of 20 Granat antiship (carrier killer) missiles, and 96 SA-N-6/S300 antiaircraft missiles. However, they only have one 130mm (5.2 inch) cannon. They also have 3 Slava class cruisers with 16 anti-ship missiles and 64 SA-N-6/S300 antiaircraft missiles. However, these are the size of our Ticonderoga Cruisers and of World War 2 cruisers.

It’s two LST Amphibious ships carring maybe three companies of naval infantry. They may be looking to evacuate theor embassy in the face of civil unrest.

I truly wish that the Israelis had a surplus Chinese torpedo in their inventory. The resultant hilarity of Russia having its own Cheonan sinking, with the evidence pointing to China, would be worth the price of admission.

So what is Russia’s end game?

In part it could be because Syria, along with Lebanon and Iran are among the last few well-heeled purchasers of Russian arms, aircraft, etc.

And that is big business that brings foreign currency to Russia and helps keep their arms industries running.

They also comprise one of the last foreign areas where Russia has an international presence and influence.

They are threatening NATO and the UN and europe. Russia wants Assad to prevail. NATO wants Assad to step down. Russia does this little display of force to make it clear they will not allow any intervention in syria by NATO, the UN, or any EU forces.

Yeah, that image meant to be a joke.

Any Sov tank at that time capable of holding up a German armoured division would have been a KV-1

There was a KV-2, which is probably where the makers of the image got the idea,
but that was a special purpose tank for use against fixed fortifications, carrying a slow firing 152mm howitzer. Against armour, it would have been quickly overwhelmed.

And the supposed fates of the "KV-6"s are exactly what you might guess from looking at the picture.

Correct. Before the Arab Spring we had anti-American, anti-Semite regimes that posed no great threat to the United States. Now we have Anti-American Anti-Semite regimes that will cooperate with those that will try and harm the United States.

That really worked out good for us /sarcasm.

A Lebanese Christian I know said this about Syria. "Those Bast---s have been killing each other forever. I hope they all kill each other." His opinion is far more rational than our foreign policy.

He could ask for pray, not ask for prayer, or demand prayer.
The ‘if you will’ is asking.

I looked at the daily intelligence summary that Putin looked at yesterday, and here’s what it said:

“Obama is the biggest pussy in the history of the United States, and Romney looks like he’s going to be the second biggest pussy. Go ahead and do what you couldn’t in the 80’s - take out the Saudi’s, the Jews, and then Europe.

The Chinese will take Taiwan, and when we’ve cleaned all that up, we’ll go after the US. Or we may get impatient and just nuke them now - like that gigantic pussy is going to launch a counter strike.”

You’ve pretty much got it.

There are two reasonable scenarios here.

1. Putin is wary of our continuing military interventions in the Arab world, and is responding with his own intervention to prevent the balance of power shifting top far in our favor.

2. Putin and Obama have secretly made their Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, dividing which countries the socialist US government will intervene in, and which countries the socialist Russian government will intervene in. Hence, the US refusal to take action on Syria and silence on Russian actions there.

From what I know of Putin, both scenarios are probably equally correct, since I think, no matter what agreements he has made with the Obamunnist, he would hedge his bets and act in whatever way furthers his interests, knowing there will be no consequence.

When I was a kid living in Yokosuka, Japan, I used to sneak under the fence to go off-base right near this:

I guess there are still a few of these old ships around...this one, the Mikasa, was the flagship of the Japanese fleet at Tsushima Straits. She somehow survived WWII (one can imagine American aviators in 1945 seeing that thing and planting bombs on it, just to be sure) and Admiral Nimitz helped fund her preservation after the war.

Interesting stuff.

The Mikasa was on George Marshall's Do Not Bomb list, along with numerous religious and historical districts and even a few entire cities.

Our boys did a good job abiding by that list so Japan got to keep (some) of their culture.
