DSCC Hits Berg With New TV Ad (North Dakota)
The Hotline ^ | June 19, 2012 | Sean Sullivan

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is making a second independent expenditure in the North Dakota Senate race for a 30-second TV ad criticizing Republican Rep. Rick Berg's record. It's the largest ad buy an outside group has made in North Dakota so far this cycle.

The spot, which spoofs the popular "Words With Friends" puzzle game played on mobile devices, argues that Berg's prioritizes his own interests over North Dakotans'.

"One congressman has spelled out his Washington priorities quite clearly," the narrator of the ad says. "He voted to give billions in tax breaks to millionaires while essentially ending Medicare for the rest of us. He voted repeatedly to raise his own pay, then gave tax breaks to companies that ship American jobs overseas."

The DSCC is spending $86,000 on the ad, which is a bit more than the GOP-aligned outside group Crossroads GPS spent on ad it released last week, which ties Democratic nominee Heidi Heitkamp to President Obama's health care law. The DSCC's latest ad will run through July 2.

With last week's primary in the rearview mirror, the ad war is heating up in North Dakota, with Democratic and Republican aligned outside groups already cluttering the airwaves, as both Berg and Heitkamp have each launched several ads of their own.

The ‘Rats wouldn’t be spending money like this if they thought winning in ND were a long shot. They have a compelling sound bite: “Rick Berg voted against raising the minimum wage, but raised his own pay.” He clearly has image problems and should not have been recruited in the first place.

It’s hard to imagine any pro-Obama democrat doing well in an oil producing state like ND.

Berg should win this easily.

Just the same, I’m going to send Berg some money and change my voter registration from SD to ND

I think you are being overly pessimistic.

It is a small amount of money in a state where it is cheap to run an ad campaign.

The DSCC has to at least try or they look ridiculous.

Clearly they smell blood. Sure you can say he shouldn't have been selected and be correct, but that is pointless. The dance has started.

The deficit vote should be a lesson on why you cannot compromise with these people. Remember when GHW Bush voilated his oath signed off on new taxes? Clinton promptly ran ads on this.

Excellent point. Now how do we keep him from being the next Mark Andrews?

Congress votes on pay raises for themselves all the time. I think it’s usually attached to other stuff and the vast majority of them vote AYE.

It’s a non-issue, only meaningful when attacking your opponent.

And he was dead right to vote against a minimum wage hike.

Anyone dumb enough to respond to this attack ad isn’t a likely GOP vote in the first place.

I would consider slashing congressional pay, but then ONLY rich people would want to run.
