Yes, we know that the controversial "Operation Fast and Furious" originated during the administration of President George W. Bush, just like we know that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were products of the the Bush administration. But recent events coming out of Washington and now the announcement of a wrongful death suit against the Justice Department by the family of the US Border Patrol agent who was gunned down by Mexican drug runners prove one thing: this isn't about President Bush anymore, this is about the current administration of President Obama. This is about a failed "war on drugs" that continues to reflect a US-Mexico relationship that leads to nowhere.
Today President Obama exerted executive privilege for this first time in his administration when Congress asked for more information about a setup that basically sold US guns to Mexican drug cartels. After that, Holder was held in contempt by the Congressional committee that was investigating this. Sure, the logic is that by supplying tracked guns to criminals, you have a better chance of capturing them (which in essence makes no sense to us, since we still can't get beyond the fact that the US government gave guns to Mexican drug dealers), but let's repeat this again: the US government sold guns to Mexican drug cartels.
To those who don't want to hear it, that is what happened, and yes, we know that the administrations of many US presidents have done similar things, but the past is the past. This is the now. And while you will hear the typical partisan talk about this (the GOP is out to get Holder and Obama), the fact remains: the US government sold guns to Mexican drug cartels. And now President Obama is invoking executive privilege. Yes, executive privilege about a situation that we can state with confidence added to the thousands and thousands of deaths in the failed war on drugs. Now, we are NOT saying that "Operation Fast and Furious" is the direct cause of the Mexican drug tragedy, but it is one of its many causes. And for those who don't know by now, over 50,000 people have died as a result of this sad and senseless war.
You would think that if anything good came out of "Operation Fast and Furious," the Obama administration would have let the American people know by now. People would accept results, but it appears that very little positive results have occurred. Instead we get executive privilege and tons of questions. We will leave the partisan claims to others, we tend to focus on one of the sad consequences of this whole campaign: the death of a US Border Patrol agent. As CBS News reported today:
CBS News has learned that the family of ICE Special Agent Jaime Zapata has filed a claim for wrongful death against the Justice Dept. and other federal agencies. Zapata was gunned down by suspected drug cartel members in Mexico in Feb. 2011 with weapons later linked to an ATF case in the Texas area. Joining the claim is Zapata's surviving partner in the attack: Victor Avila.
In an interview last November, Zapata's family told CBS News they feel that U.S. law enforcement could have stopped the sale of a gun used to kill their son. CBS News obtained law enforcement records that show the gun that killed Zapata came from the U.S., and the suspects who allegedly trafficked it had been under law enforcement's watch for months in Dallas but weren't arrested.
In February, CBS News learned a second weapon used in the Zapata attack was also linked to an ongoing case under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The Justice Department has said ATF "was not aware of" the suspect's purchase of the gun that killed Zapata when it happened, and that answering further questions would jeopardize the investigation.
This isn't some patriot conspiracy blog reporting this. This is flipping CBS News. You don't think there are questions about this? Shouldn't the American people demand that more transparency be displayed here? What are the secrets that are not being shared? And why?
The tragedy of the Mexican drug war has negatively affected too many lives. When is enough enough? If the Obama administration had real political courage, it would be in front of this story and be more forthcoming. Instead, we get immigration promises and campaign videos in Spanish, while people continue to die south of the border. Maybe Obama is just like the rest of the American presidents who have followed a Monroe-Doctrine philosophy with Latin America. The more things change
. well, you know how that ends.
They do not even mention that Zapata was investigating Fast and Furious weapons shipments.
Gunwalker / Murdergate ping.
It is a political decision designed to fire up O’s base, just like the immigration policy change and the gay thing.
I fear and believe this will enter a new legal phase now that will kill any chance the truth will come out for many years. I also believe that Obama will lose in November, regardless of F&F, but I also believe the MSM will downplay this story and the dem spin machine will hang it around the GOP’s neck as a witchhunt.
First, national security leaks, then the gunwaking AG in contempt of Congress — now if the SCOTUS kicks Obamacare to the curb tomorrow this will be an epic week of failure for Barack Hussein Obama, mmm, mmm, mmmmmm.
What did Holder and Obama know and when did they know it.
A latino weighs in. Imagine that.
Self inflicted headache by incompetent idiots.
And well it should, because this is not just about the coverup of a Watergate type screw-up, it is about the coverup of a series of homicides caused by the negligence of the DOJ, and most likely the Obama administration!
If Mexico had a working government, they would be demanding Holder’s extradition and Obama’s trial in a UN court for arming terrorists in their country.
We should keep our eyes open for stories on Fast and Furious coming out of Mexico via their own news sites.
In my opinion, if they downplay it too much THEY will look like the "racist" (even though I hate to use that word with Latinos. I do not consider it a race).
Anybody know any good Mexican news sites in English? Normally I read the spanish language sites from there.
If I am not mistaken, Mexico's Attorney General has already mentioned the "ex" word regarding the deaths of "several hundred" Mexicanos.
IF re-elected, Jughead will be impeached and convicted.
Whoa, right there!
The operation under Bush had tracking devices in the firearms. It didn't work, because the batteries went dead. The operation was stopped because it didn't work.
Under Obama, there were no tracking devices, no attempts to arrest the straw buyers or track the guns down the line and apprehend.
An entirely new operation, never intended to do other than provide piles of dead bodies to point to in an attempt to blame American guns for Mexican deaths and push gun control on the American People. Bush should not be blamed for that.
Sorry, when the article starts out with complete idiocy and/or and outright lie (”Yes, we know that the controversial “Operation Fast and Furious” originated during the administration of President George W. Bush,”), I won’t bother reading the rest...
Ice Agent Jaime Zapata Murdered While Investigating Fast and Furious Weapons
ICE Agent Jaime Zapata and his partner, Victor Avila, were ambushed at a fake roadblock in Mexico. Were they set up? If so by whom?
That must be a Mexican prison. I doubt cigs are permitted in US graybars.
does it add up?:
What could possibly be the motive behind this lunacy?
On the last day of December last year, Manuel Mel Zelaya, the deposed Honduran president and self-described victim of high-frequency radiation attacks by Israeli mercenaries, vowed to the press that he would return to Honduras. Few outside of Honduras have paid much attention to Zelayas MacArthur-esque prediction, but it has become apparent there is more behind his declaration than his usual hyperbole and bombastic absurdities.
Behind the scenes in the Obama administration there appears to be a concerted effort to pressure the democratically elected government of President Porfirio Lobo to dismiss charges of misappropriation of government funds and falsifying documents that are pending against Zelaya. This would open the door for his return to the country, and would be certain to undermine the delicate process of reestablishing democracy and order that is currently taking place in this poor and beleaguered nation.
When Zelaya was removed from office in July of 2009, the Obama administration at first joined with leftist dictators Fidel Castro of Cuba, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, and Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua in calling for his reinstatement. The Obama White House seemed oblivious to the Honduran constitution, as well as the threat Zelaya posed to the stability of the country and the region. When the courageous Honduran people held firm to their democratic constitution and refused to yield to the pressure exerted by the U.S., the Obama administration found no way of saving face other than reversing course and backing the democratic presidential elections called for by their constitution.
The Honduran Connection 7.7.11 Now we know why Hillary Clinton and Obama were falling all over themselves to support and prop-up the Honduran Marxist dictator-wannabe, Manuel Zelaya back in 2009. I never could figure out why they would create such blatantly unflattering, pro-Marxist optics for the Obama regime for a small country like Honduras. Now it all makes perfect sense. Zelaya attempted to overthrow the Honduran constitution and install himself as dictator for life, a la Hugo Chavez. The Honduran Congress AND Supreme Court followed their Constitutional Rule of Law to the letter and removed Zelaya. Within hours Obama and Clinton were threatening Honduras and demanding that the Marxist dictator Zelaya be re-installed. Now we know why. Obama and Clinton were arming Zelaya and were coordinating with Zelaya to run arms through Honduras. Presumably the deal was that some of the arms would stay with Zelaya and most would move into Mexico from the South. Then, Obama and Clinton could "find" U.S. guns in Southern Mexico and Central America, and thus use these optics to bolster their false contention that "90%" of Mexican guns were sourced directly from the U.S. "See? U.S. guns are all the way down in Chiapas State and Guatemala. U.S. guns are everywhere! The Second Amendment simply is not feasible any longer!"
US revokes visas to pressure Haiti on election
It is very curious that Mexico has done nothing....to gather evidence in this case. I would speculate somewhere behind all of this mess....that the top level of the Mexican government knew about Operation Fast and Furious....and asked for it to continue to run...way past the “safe” point. And this might explain why the President has to bless everything now to his level.
Right. One field agent, realizing there were no tracking devices, actually went out and purchased one themselves to attach to a weapon, then got reprimanded by their supervisor for doing so. They didn’t want those weapons tracked until they showed up at crime scenes. They got exactly what they wanted.
In my dreams, I see Holder, Napolitano, and Obama in striped pajamas saying “We would have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for those meddling whistleblowers!”
For morning viewing
Besides the outrage over Zapata (and Terry) they should be outraged over the cynical murder of hundreds of Mexicans
The GOP should be harping on one message every time F&F is mentioned. F&F was a program designed to result in Mexican deaths - so that 'evil' US-sourced guns could be found at the crime scenes and US gun laws could be blamed for the carnage. Holder, Napolitano, Hillary and Obama and a host of their minions cooked this program up knowing that Mexicans would die - in fact, needing Mexicans to die for this scheme to work. The only "botch" in the scheme was getting Americans killed too.
As I've said on another thread, Mexico has a pretty decent case hat the United States committed an act of war against it.
It's not patently false, as it was an offshoot of a legitimate LE effort called "Wide Receiver". But the original program kept tight control over the weapons, never letting them actually fall into criminal/terrorist hands, and arrested the gunrunners.
Saying that that's the same as Fast & Furious is like a newspaper delivery route being used to distribute drugs hidden in the papers is the fault of the newspaper for creating the route.
