Guidelines on Hatred and the Religion Forum
Religion Moderator | June 22, 2012 | Religion Moderator

Posted on 06/22/2012 8:48:35 AM PDT by Religion Moderator

It is within the bounds of “open” Religion Forum town square style debate for a Freeper to express his hatred of a belief. But such posts are never allowed on RF threads labeled “prayer” “devotional” “caucus” or “ecumenical.”

It is never within the bounds on the Religion Forum for a Freeper to express his hatred of people who hold a particular belief when any Freeper is part of the belief group.

For example:

It is ok to express hatred towards MormonISM on “open” Religion Forum threads. It is never ok to express hatred towards Mormons because some Freepers are Mormon.

It is ok to express hatred towards CatholicISM on “open” Religion Forum threads. It is never ok to express hatred towards Catholics because some Freepers are Catholic.

It is ok to express hatred towards ProtestantISM on “open” Religion Forum threads. It is never ok to express hatred towards Protestants because some Freepers are Protestant.

It is ok to express hatred towards SatanISM and Satanists both because no Freeper is Satanist.

Some political posters are now venturing onto the Religion Forum probably because Romney’s beliefs are at issue in this election.

If you don’t know whether you are on the Religion Forum, look at the top of your internet browser window. If the current address (URL) begins with http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/ then you are on the Religion Forum.

If you do not wish to see RF posts, do NOT use the "everything" option on the Free Republic browse option list. Instead, browse by "News/Activism." When you log back in, the browse will reset to "everything" - so be sure to set it back to "News/Activism."

Finally, whereas posters may argue vigorously for and against beliefs on “open” Religion Forum threads it is never tolerable to use ad hominems in religious debate because they invariably lead to flame wars when the subject is one’s deeply held religious beliefs.

For something to be "making it personal" it must be speaking to another Freeper, personally.

"Protestants are heretics" is not making it personal. "You are a heretic" is making it personal. "Catholics worship Mary" is not making it personal. "You worship Mary" is making it personal. "Mormons worship many gods" is not making it personal. "You worship many gods" is making it personal.

However, when a poster paints with a brush that accuses an entire religion of criminal behavior - his post will be pulled as flame bait. For example, posts that say "Protestants kill babies" or "Catholics molest children" or "Mormons kill non-Mormons" will be pulled. However, if the post is specific about a non-Freeper, I will not pull it. For example "Rev. Doe says abortion and infanticide are not sin" or "Father Doe was convicted for molesting those kids" or "Mormons killed non-Mormons at Mountain Meadows" would not be pulled.

Statements formed as questions are rarely "making it personal."

"Are you a heretic" is not making it personal. "You are a heretic" is making it personal.

Forms of "making it personal" include mind reading, attributing motive, accusing another Freeper of telling a lie (because it attributes motive, the intent to deceive) - making the thread "about" individual Freeper(s), following a Freeper from thread to thread and badgering a Freeper over-and-again with the same question.

When in doubt, avoid the use of the pronoun "you" and Freeper's names - or put yourself in the other guy's shoes.

Despite all these efforts to eliminate ad hominems, there is nothing I can do to keep you from "taking it personally."

If you keep getting your feelings hurt because other posters ridicule or disapprove or hate what you hold dear, then you are too thin-skinned to be involved in “open” RF debate. You should IGNORE “open” RF threads altogether and instead post to RF threads labeled “prayer” “devotional” “caucus” or “ecumenical.”

The use of the term is deliberate.

Ya THINK???

Questions put to Joseph Smith: "'Do you believe the Bible?' [Smith:]'If we do, we are the only people under heaven that does, for there are none of the religious sects of the day that do'. When asked 'Will everybody be damned, but Mormons'? [Smith replied] 'Yes, and a great portion of them, unless they repent, and work righteousness." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119).
Joseph Smith: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (from Pearl of Great Price 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).

Brigham Young stated this repeatedly: "When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness" (Journal of Discourses 5:73); "The Christian world, so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God" (Journal of Discourses 8:171); "With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199); "And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.24); "Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal of Discourses 10:230).

Orson Pratt proclaimed: "Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent" (The Seer, p. 255).

Orson Pratt also said: "This great apostasy commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of Discourses
, vol.18, p.44) and: "But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance" (Journal of Discourses , 18:172).

President John Taylor stated: "Christianity...is a perfect pack of nonsense...the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century." (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.167); "Where shall we look for the true order or authority of God? It cannot be found in any nation of Christendom." (Journal of Discourses , 10:127).

James Talmage said: "A self-suggesting interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy from the Church of Christ". (A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.182).

President Joseph Fielding Smith said: "Doctrines were corrupted, authority lost, and a false order of religion took the place of the gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it had been the case in former dispensations, and the people were left in spiritual darkness." (Doctrines of Salvation, p.266). "For hundreds of years the world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation ...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, p.282).

More recent statements by apostle Bruce McConkie are also very clear: "Apostasy was universal...And this darkness still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored gospel" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol 3, p.265); "Thus the signs of the times include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in the religious world in general" (The Millennial Messiah, p.403); "a perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, p.132); "virtually all the millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, p.269); "Gnosticism is one of the great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that era." (Mormon Doctrine, p.316).

President George Q. Cannon said: "After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth, p.324).

President Wilford Woodruff stated: "the Gospel of modern Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 2, p.196).

The difference between Mormons and Protestants is that Mormons don’t feel comfortable criticizing their church (or any church publicly). Protestants treat it like a sacrament.

It's mostly a sacrament on the FR Rel Forum. LOL.

Sadly, most of the discussions on the religion forum turn into insult fests between a few members.

We keep hoping that MORMONs uh, members of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints would clean up their act; but few can keep up in a debate, so they fall back on insults.

Perhaps you didn’t see this above:

What about this situation:

Mr. Z is known claim no label at all regarding his own religion, but has a habit of critiquing other religions .

Mr. Z replies to Mr. X (an adherent of Religion X) by posting “Religion X sucks canal water” or “Religion X is of the devil” or “Religion X is filled with malingerers and criminals” or “People of Religion X love sin” or some other derogatory remark.

Mr. X replies to Mr. Z “Your religion also sucks canal water” (etc.)

_________

Please explain how the RF rules apply to that scenario.

If a Religion Forum poster chooses to not reveal his religious label, then do not badger him to reveal it. That would be making the thread "about" him - it would be "making it personal."

In this case, there is nothing to prevent Mr. X from saying to Mr. Z "Your religion also sucks canal water" when he doesn't know what that religion is. However, he might appear foolish to those reading along for saying it that way instead of "Since you have refused to reveal your religion, we may safely presume it also sucks canal water."

I think that it is anti Christian to express hatred at all. You can dislike, or disapprove, someone’s actions, but hatred is a very strong word.

“Let those who love the Lord hate evil” (Psalm 97:10a).

I guess the question is:

"Are false teachings 'evil'"?

Is anger or hatried even OK? According to what Jesus says in Matthew 5, it is not.

Strange; in another place; it appears that it is...

Ephesians 4:26a
“In your anger do not sin”:

I guess Jesus was just so HAPPY to see the moneychangers in the temple that he accidently knocked their tables over!

As a person who worked many years of Psych, I can tell you that debate in addictive, being part of a mob is addictive and belittling others (even in backhanded ways) to make one’s self feel good is actually a diagnosable disorder.

MORMON
ATTITUDES OF SUPERIORITY

  1. I’m Superior; I have a special gift of the holy Ghost -- you don’t!
  2. I’m Superior; I have God’s true priesthood power -- you don’t!
  3. I’m Superior; I can go in God’s secret Temple -- you can’t!
  4. I’m Superior; I’ve been Endowed with special Gifts and Knowledge -- you’re just normal!
  5. I’m Superior; I’ll have my family with me in heaven -- you’ll be with strangers!
  6. I’m Superior; I’m becoming a God -- you aren’t!
  7. I’m Superior; My women know their place as servants of man and yours don’t.
  8. I’m Superior; YOUR creeds are wrong because they come from man - mine comes from God (you can find each one printed in our Scriptures).
  9. I’m Superior; I don’t HAVE a creed - I’ve got 13 Articles of Faith.
10. I'm Superior; I have 4 "Bibles"-- the standard works (5 if you count the JST) -- you've only got one: in as far as it is translated correctly.
11. I’m Superior; I can lie with impunity about such things as church membership, church growth, church doctrine, church history, church influence, etc. —                           -- You can’t.
12. I’m Superior; I am right (everybody knows) when I say 'evangelical' Christians are lunatics --
-- You’re a hideous narrow-minded bigot, who is persecuting me by practicing discrimination by saying I'm not a Christian.
13. I'm Superior; I have a testimony about a prophet -- you don't.
14. I'm Superior; I have a Scripture-producing Amos 3:7 prophet -- you don't
15. I’m Superior; I have a Living Prophet who talks to god every day -- you have a dim-witted hireling of Satan who only talks to himself.
16. I'm Superior; I have my calling & election made sure -- you don't.
17. I’m Superior; I have magic underwear to protect me from the bogey man -- you don’t.
18. I’m Superior; I have secret clasps and grips to give the angel so I get admitted to the celestial kingdom -- you don’t ;so you can’t.
19. I'm Superior; I know secret handshake codes for afterlife entrances-- you don't.
20. I’m Superior; I will see Joseph Smith setting on the right hand of GOD, when I get to Mormon heaven, and he will recognize me and judge me favorably                              -- You’re on your own; when you get to wherever you’re going!
21. I’m Superior; I’m going to hie to Kolob -- you’re going to who knows where.
22. I’m Superior; I get to have a harem and act like a celestial stud for time and all eternity -- you don’t.
23. I’m Superior; I have sun stones, moon stones, sky stones, cloud stones, Saturn stones, and the evil eye of Osirus guarding my temple
-- You have nothing but a stupid cross.
24. I’m Superior; My church has billions in assets stashed away -- yours has taken a stupid vow of poverty.
25. I'm Superior; Last - we have the power to keep a whole race out of our priesthood if we wanted to reinsert our 148-year legacy  (we ARE still keeping an entire GENDER at bay!)
26.  I'm superior; I have the "higher law" -- everyone else "lives under the "lesser law' because I say so...(over and over).

Those things don't really matter though. Obedience to God is all that matters.

Ask a pointed question: get a pointed answer example:

>

John 6:28-29 (niv)

Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

1 John 3:21-24

Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.  And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.  The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Your argument that doctrine does not matter is pure evil.

See, that's an example of what goes wrong on the RF. I don't see that BB said that doctrine doesn't matter. And it's not pure evil (or of the devil) to think that. It's really rather realistic and his point is well made.

If our salvation depended on 100% correct doctrine, nobody would make it. NOBODY can claim to have 100% correct doctrine, because we are fallible, limited humans trying to understand the infinite mind of God with our puny human minds.

It ain't happening.

That said, there are those of us who don't believe that correct doctrine gets one into heaven.

Christianity is about a relationship with God, not getting our facts about Him correct.

I kind of doubt that many of the people, like the thief on the cross, had their doctrine down pat when they encountered Jesus and yet Jesus still told them they were saved (today you will be with me in paradise).

Teachings are not a person.

But people that hold to those 'teachings' tend to get REALLY upset when called on them.

THEY take it VERY 'personal'!

I don't see that BB said that doctrine doesn't matter.

THIS sentence probably gave him that impression: Those things don't really matter though.

"Protestants are heretics" is not making it personal. "You are a heretic" is making it personal.

Where is that line? I can make the same assertion by "Protestants are heretics. You are a Protestant".

It hasn’t been the Mormon posters for the most part but a few Catholics and Protestants.

It is up to the listener (us) to keep the two separate — the idea and the living, breathing, human being.

Can we consider islam and satanism to be synonymous?

I don't make the rules, but as a Christian I have a problem with that. It is offence against truth. The Koran has adoring chapters about Jesus, Mary, and St. John the Baptist. Islam is really a remnant of an obscure Christian Gnostic sect that got a second life because of writings of Mohammed and military success. I don't intend to argue back and forth, since it is not the right thread, but slandering our enemy "satanist" is not helpful to anyone.

Thank you for the fine job you do of herding us cats on the RF. I know it has to be a thankless job most days.

Doctrine is essential in order to evangelize, as we are commanded to do.

That those who have some uncertainty (large or small) about doctrine can obtain the promises of Christ is a given as God’s mercy is boundless.

I have not even hinted that one cannot know God in some beneficial way unless one knows everything about God - yet that is what you have concluded.

None of this supports BB’s preposterous claim that (paraphrased)

“we should not worry what falsehoods (erroneous doctrine) or truths (true doctrine) about God are being preached, because we just have to know God”.

What drivel it is to undermine the utter necessity of solid bedrock Gospel truth.

That God can work with us regardless of how little we know about Him is a wonderful thing, but how evil it is to encourage people to take so lightly the obligation we have to know as best as we can (which demands we seek truthful doctrine - not just any old doctrine).

We are invited to run a race - and running a race requires real effort, not a shoulder shrugging “whatever”.
