A 14-year-old boy shot and nearly killed an intruder who broke into his Phoenix home and pulled a gun on him while he was watching his three younger siblings, police said Saturday.

The teen and his siblings, ages 8, 10 and 12, were at home alone when a woman rang the doorbell Friday afternoon, Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said.

The teen didn't open the door because he didn't recognize the woman.

Soon after, the teen heard a loud bang on the door, rushed his siblings upstairs and got a handgun from his parent's bedroom.

When he got to the top of the stairs, he saw a man break through the front door and point a gun at him.

The boy shot the 37-year-old man, who was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and underwent surgery. The man was upgraded to critical condition and is expected to survive and be booked into jail within the week on counts of aggravated assault and burglary, Holmes said.

He said the suspect did not get a shot off. He declined to release his name until he is booked into jail.

The woman who rang the home's doorbell got away.

Holmes hailed the teen's actions and his parents for teaching the kids to never open the door to strangers.

"The police and indeed our community does not ever want to see a...

Why burglary? Why not armed robbery?

These is a great teachable moment for all parents what to teach their oldest children what to do in case of such a situation.

This young man must have great parents.

37 year old attacker with a gun in a minimum of armed daylight breaking and entering. Perp had a woman accomplice so my guess is wealth distribution and a contribution to someone’s election campaign who favors gun control and confiscation.

"Holmes hailed the teen's actions and his parents for teaching the kids to never open the door to strangers."

breath-taking. The door got knocked down. It's the weapon and a kid who knew how to use it,that saved the day, for which the kid gets semi-chastised later on in the article.

“If Obama had a Son...
(He’d be the guy laying on the floor with the bullet hole in him) “

Since we don’t have a photo of the perp, we are left wondering if it was indeed “one of Obama’s sons, or one of his “cousins” from Mexico! Any one betting on this one?

‘The kid learned well the lessons of Armed Defense 101. Now he’s ready to take Armed Defense 201 and learn the concept of the “double tap”.’

Then have him take the Armed Defense 301 class where he get to learn the Mozambique Drill (aka “triple tap”) of two to the body and one to the head.

Why burglary? Why not armed robbery?

Aggravated burglary = illegally entering a dwelling while armed with a deadly weapon (or words to that effect). It's like armed robbery + breaking and entering, sort of. Some states have supplemented that with "home invasion" charges, which just adds a "dwelling was occupied" element to the burglary.

Armed robbery would be a more applicable charge if the victim were accosted and threatened while out on the street, basically anywhere outside their house or apartment.

having an UNLOCKED, LOADED gun and telling the boy where it was and 2)

Exactly!!! Had the weapon been locked and/or unloaded they would all be dead.

I think, given all the circumstances, as freedumb2003 laid out in post #5, plus the fact that he had a gun pointed at him, we can't really fault this kid young man one bit.

Putting the Constitution into action - SOLO!

Something the good old boys TOGETHER couldn’t do with the imposter, BO, the thief who broke into our system, and has stolen the goods of America.

If this was CA, NY or IL, the perp would not be jailed afterward, the teen would be arrested and taken to juve, CPS would be after the parents.

So glad this ended this way. The kid protected himself and his siblings, but he will not have to live with the knowledge of having taken another’s life.

What’s not stated is whether the invader knew that the kids were there. There’s a good chance that he didn’t. There’s also a chance that he was after something (maybe the kids, maybe property). Just cannot tell.

It’s very nice to see the officer praising the kid and his parents, as others have said - leaving a loaded gun in the presence of a minor will get you locked up in most of the country.

"I'm not sure he gave full thought about what he had to do. He just acted."

Did the cop say that? Sheesh!
Unlike policemen who always have everything under control. Yeah, right.
The kid was probably scared out of his mind and he still did all the right things. Better than most adults.
What should he have done if he had given "full thought"?
Yea, I know, dial 911 and wait for the police. Somehow that seems insufficient.

I hope the parents don't get hell for the gun being accessible to a minor.

Why do I get the feeling that this kid does not look as if he could be the spawn of “The Zoro”?

If I was this kid’s parents I would be swollen up with pride!

I fully expect the district attorney to file charges against the parents. This child should never have had access to a loaded gun in the home. Any gun in the house should have been locked up in one place and the ammo in another, also locked. The boy should have called 911 and waited for the police. /s
