14-year-old Phoenix boy shoots armed intruder
Associated Press ^ | Jun 23, 2012, 2:36 PM EDT | AMANDA LEE MYERS

A 14-year-old boy shot and nearly killed an intruder who broke into his Phoenix home and pulled a gun on him while he was watching his three younger siblings, police said Saturday.

The teen and his siblings, ages 8, 10 and 12, were at home alone when a woman rang the doorbell Friday afternoon, Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said.

The teen didn't open the door because he didn't recognize the woman.

Soon after, the teen heard a loud bang on the door, rushed his siblings upstairs and got a handgun from his parent's bedroom.

When he got to the top of the stairs, he saw a man break through the front door and point a gun at him.

The boy shot the 37-year-old man, who was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and underwent surgery. The man was upgraded to critical condition and is expected to survive and be booked into jail within the week on counts of aggravated assault and burglary, Holmes said.

He said the suspect did not get a shot off. He declined to release his name until he is booked into jail.

The woman who rang the home's doorbell got away.

Holmes hailed the teen's actions and his parents for teaching the kids to never open the door to strangers.

"The police and indeed our community does not ever want to see a...

I was hoping to see a picture of the perp on the AP website.

I’m sure that was just an oversight.

In Missouri “Armed Criminal Action” would be added to the list of charges.

I’m happy the 14 yr. old doesn’t have the weight of taking a life, on his shoulders.
He can focus on having saved his siblings.

Detached....I’m all for dead perps.

More thoughtfully....I’m glad it worked out this way.

But...stupid #1: The doctors, who are probably slapping themselves on the after performing another “miracle”, and tallying up the bill...which, of course, we will pay, because the odds of this guy having insurance is somewhere between absolutely none and zero. I think that putting a band-aid on it and hoping for the best would have been sufficient.

To those that say, “bad shooting”, I would give this “boy”, more of a man than many men, MASSIVE slack in this area. If needed, I hope that I have the maturity and wits to perform that well in a life or death crisis.

“I hope the parents don’t get hell for the gun being accessible to a minor.”

Are you kidding? The media/police/bedwetters wouldn’t dare touch that.

Excellent work! A- (A is for the intruder dead, and A+ if the intruder was disintegrated on impact).

About that quote and your comment... "... but this young man did exactly what he should have done," he said. "I'm not sure he gave full thought about what he had to do. He just acted."

In the context of the officer's remarks, it actually looks like he is actually giving the young man praise. After all, a well trained firearm user will, indeed, "just act". Until the training takes hold, the trainee must think through whatever he/she must do to accomplish the goal. This young man obviously knew what he was doing and ...

... did it.

Under pressure

And from a position requiring a shot downhill

that almost killed the perp!

I couldn't ask for anything more than that. He took aim, squeezed the trigger, and hit the target, taking out the target with only one shot! A Marksman in my book.

the parents should be congratulated on 1) having an UNLOCKED, LOADED gun and telling the boy where it was...

In Californicate the parents would be arrested, prosecuted, and serve serious prison time if they were unable to get an informed jury.

The perp would be given immunity for testimony against the teen, and the teen would definitely do time in the youth authority as 14 year olds can't get a jury if they are charged as minors.

The family would be impoverished and destroyed, and the perp would definitely sue and again the only check would be an informed jury.

It's not uncommon for a woman to act as a lure to get the intended victim to open their door. Glad this kid had the savvy not to fall for the ruse.

“I’m not sure he gave full thought about what he had to do. He just acted.”

Even better - he didn’t shoot any house pets. What an idiot.

“Yea, I know, dial 911 and wait for the police. “

...and call Crime Scene Cleanup while you are at it, because their services will be needed after the CSI team leaves.

Well, maybe he was a first time offender. </s>

If the perp looked like a hoodie wearing ,skittles eating, doped up son of Obama and the shooter looked like Romney’s or Rubio’s son- the kids in trouble.

Obama , Pelosi and the DNC killed Brian Terry and could care less- because he was white.

Apparently, the kid even remembered to shoot low from the top of the stairs.

That is one good, well-trained kid.

Congratulations to all involved (except the intruders).

This is Arizona —the kid will get a special award from the Governor and maybe lunch at the Governor’s Mansion.

Apparently, the kid even remembered to shoot low from the top of the stairs.

Why would you want to shoot low?

If anything, you would want to shoot just slightly high to compensate for the descending path through the perp's body and the fact that the bullet would not travel far enough to rise to the line of sight.
