UK: Overhaul the benefits system, says [PM]David Cameron
The Telegraph ^ | 6/24/2012 | Robert Winnett

David Cameron is to admit that the welfare system is causing “huge resentment” for hard-working taxpayers as he pledges to target working-age families in a “fundamental” overhaul.

In a major speech, the Prime Minister will indicate that out-of-work families will not qualify for extra benefits if they have more children and that young unemployed people may be forced to live at home under plans to cut the welfare bill by another £10 billion.

He will say that unemployment benefit may be “time-limited” and the £26,000 cap on welfare handouts for each household may be further reduced.

Universal benefits for pensioners such as the winter fuel allowance and television licence will be protected, he will say, despite pressure from Liberal Democrats and Iain Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions secretary, for them to be means-tested.

In the speech he will say: “We need to think harder about who receives working-age welfare. If it is a real safety net, then clearly it’s principally for people who have no other means of support, or who have fallen on hard times. But there are many receiving today who do not necessarily fall into these camps.

“The time has come to go back to first principles; to have a real national debate and ask some fundamental, searching questions about working-age welfare; what it is actually for; who should receive it; what the limits of state provision should be; and what kind of contribution we should expect from those receiving benefits.”

Pensioners currently receive benefits worth £107 billion, including the state pension, compared with £54 billion paid to working-age people. Universal benefits, such as the £200 winter fuel allowance, free TV licences and free bus passes cost almost £4 billion annually – almost equal to the budget for Jobseeker’s Allowance.

However, the Prime Minister is

Just my thoughts for England:

England needs to bring back Christian Ethics and dump the Atheist/socialism. They need a Reawakening and to get out of the EU. Patriotism needs to be regenerated, as does freedom and initiative.

They need to promote marriage between one man and one woman and traditional family and get back to Classical Education—with rhetoric-—and outlaw polygamy and quit supporting muslim immigration and their many wives and children and out of wedlock births of their worthless citizens.

CS Lewis warned England was destroying their future generations with the ‘social” studies courses-—getting rid of Traditional Classical education and inserting indoctrination classes into Marxism/Atheism so kids can’t think or be rational and have no morality. Dalrymple writes about the immorality that is rampant with young parents (never married) who neglect and abuse their children who become addicts, suicide victims, or criminals.

I would reestablish the Anglican Church as the only promoted one in England and God and Jesus Christ would be all over the country and Blasphemy Laws would be in place only for the Anglican Church. It is England’s traditions and heritage that made them great. It worked so much better than the socialism.

Get back to Blackstone!!! and Rule of Law and John Locke’s philosophy-— when England was the most powerful nation on Earth and produced such greats as Newton, Shakespeare, Milton, etc. Yes, they would still have social problems, but only in a free Christian society does that become solvable to any great degree.

This is the kind of action our own politicians should be taking.

Instead they moan about how mean spirited conservatives are whenever a suggestion is made that welfare and other publoc assistance should be for the truly needy - not welfare queens and able-bodied slackers, illegal aliens and new legal immigrants.

You think? How come we have a triple A credit rating and 10 year govt. bond rate is below 2.13%, the lowest it’s been since 1898.

Remind me what the US credit rating currently is?

Judging by your thoughts, I’m guessing you don’t know a lot about England.

You’re certainly right we need to get out of the EU.

As for christianity, we’re officially a christian country unlike the secular US with it’s separation of state and church. Our head of state is also head of the church. Members of the CofE sit in the house of lords and vote on all legislation, but only the CofE is represented, no other religions. If you watched the past couple of weeks of celebrations, you wouldn’t question our patriotism.

Currently marriage is only allowed between men and women and polygamy is illegal. Muslim immigration is capped and we have a society that is 93% white British and 3% muslim, which compares interestingly with the US racial split.

Your points about Lewis and Dalrymple are vaild, but apply more so to the US than the UK. These are problems we both share.

The anglican church is the only official church and the only officially promoted one, but a return to religious protectionism is as bad as a return to commercial protectionism. Before you lecture us, catch us up and become officially christian and have your church represented in your government. As for socialism, well you guys are the ones with the left wing foreign prseident and vast corporation tax rates stifling business, we’re the ones with the Conservative PM and some of the lowest corporation tax levels in the world. Half your country still allows union closed shops and you reckon we’re the socialists?

England was the most powerful nation on earth when we ruled directly over a third of the world’s population and a quarter of her land mass. Unfortunately America did everything they could at the end of WW2 to strip us of that empire, so it’s your fault. :)

The EU is not the cause of England's sinking. In fact England, France and Germany's moral sinking is what is affecting others.

England's sinking happened at the same time as ours -- in the 60s.

Ok, England was not the most powerful nation on the Earth during the time it produced these 3.

John Milton (1608-1674), Shakespeare (1564-1616) were there during Elizabeth I, James I, Charles I, Cromwell and Charles II's reigns

During this time, England was most definitely NOT the most powerful nation on Earth, not even the most powerful in Europe, and not in the top league of the most powerful in Europe at that time

In fact in Europe in the period 1560 to 1670, the most powerful nations in Europe were: Spain, France, the Holy Roman Empire, the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth and Ottoman Turkey.

in the second-tier were Portugal, England, the Dutch republic, Sweden (though the Dutch and Swedes pushed themselves forward in the 1600s and England only came into it's own in the 1700s with the war of the Spanish Succession)

On the wider global scale, in the 1560-1670 period the most powerful nations in the world were the Ottoman Empire across North Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, the Ming Empire in China, the Mughal Empire in India and Safavid Persia.

Each of these was richer and had a large military than any of the European powers besides Spain.

As the only "promoted" one, ok, but the Church of England was never the only Church in England. There were Catholics except for a brief interrugnum, Methodists and Baptists/Puritans as well as Unitarians right from the beginning

England was the most powerful nation on earth when we ruled directly over a third of the world’s population and a quarter of her land mass.

incorrectly, the english ruled over 1/5th of the world's population at the Empire's largest extent and yes, you ar correct, over nearly 1/4th of the world's land-mass

Unfortunately America did everything they could at the end of WW2 to strip us of that empire, so it’s your fault. :) -- I don't think that's completely fair. While the USA did look for self-determination, the fact was that after WWII, the UK could just not afford having colonies any more and the colonies -- especially India which was the jewel in the crown, was going to get independence one way or another

to the everlasting honor of the Empire, the British left their colonies peacefully and thereby retained a good standing, quite unlike the French or Turks

You’re being very kind to them. What the US did to the British Empire at the end of WW2 was motivated by exactly the same thinking that made them come up with Plan Red in 1930. Up until recently the US has always seen the British Empire as the biggest threat to US expansionism.

” - - - No, it was about England - - - “

Neither the word “England” and the term “UK” was written in the article for this thread.

However, the first two letters in the title of this thread was “UK.”

Hence, I chose to refer to the Nation, as described in the article, that has chosen to follow the Greek Model of total dependance on Government, as UK.

BTW, what IS the difference between what the PM is in charge of and the UK?

And what do you do with the kids ? And the parents ? While I agree with you, I haven't seen a real good answer to either.

Just re-arranging the deck chairs.
Wanna fix it? Stop inviting barbarians in and giving them huge homes and stipends. Cut the stipends of the ones already here and kick their sorry butts out. Break it off with the EU and offer a better tax and regulatory environment for business. Create a “British First Amendment” and put an end to the concept of “Thought Crime.”

Education is vital. They destroyed Classical Education which is laced in moral ethics. CS Lewis writes about it in his Abolition of Man. All children need to be taught Virtue—and be habituated into the correct sentiments. (Pain for evil, etc.)

Return Classical Education and teaching Virtue which is the glue for freedom and responsible behavior. It is what is known to be essential for great and lasting civilizations, since Plato. Marxists destroyed it—moral virtue—because it is the easiest way to destroy cultures from within (Lukacs). They destroyed the curricula and promote Vice in MSM and by all their Foundations which glorify evil. That was never allowed prior to the Marxist infiltration of the courts and institutions.

Socialism has to be EJECTED—it is a welfare system which rewards evil behavior and destroys Virtue.

They have to get back to rewarding Virtue. Governments —if Just—can never promote Vice with their programs. Their marriage laws should make it more profitable to stay married and raise their own children.

Charity (the Church of England) should take care of the poor with donations—and the people who do good for the poor should be glorified and encouraged.
The poor should be enabled by the Church to learn how to be productive.

Government always makes things worse. There will always be poor and the downtrodden-—because that is the way life is. It is never fair. But if people are Good—things are much, much better. Teach Goodness—Teach Christian Ethics which is the best ethical system in the world—and one which supports Free Will—Freedom.

Get rid of Socialism/Marxism/Progressivism-—it teaches envy, hate, dependence and sloth and that there is no God-—so no hope, love, or meaning to life. It only teaches Vice, Lust and perversion-—slavery of the Flesh and addicted masses that allow human beings to be “means to an end” (murdered/aborted/euthanized, etc.).
