(Reuters) - Firefighters struggled on Wednesday to beat back a fiercely aggressive wildfire raging at the edge of Colorado Springs that has forced at least 35,000 people from their homes and was nipping at the edges of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The so-called Waldo Canyon Fire, fanned by gusting winds, has gutted an unknown number of homes on the wooded fringes of Colorado's second-most populous city and prompted more evacuations as flames roared out of control for a fifth day.
President Barack Obama plans to pay a visit to the area on Friday to view the damage, the White House said.

While nobama “visits”, will they ground all planes (including firefighting planes) to clear aitrspace for the King?
yeah, it does sound like a colossally stupid time to do it, unless they land him outside the firefighting plane area and bus him in.
According to my friend who is an air traffic controller in San Jose - yes.
He’ll gain no votes there.
This is a very conservative area.
As long as the SOB sits in the back of the bus i got no problem with it
Will they confiscate all the forks, too?
It’s theater for the benefit of liberals elsewhere. And it’s stupid, if in any way it hinders the fire fighting effort. Ya think George W. Bush would ever have set up such a photo op? I’d just call it crazy if it wasn’t so potentially dangerous.
Of course now, what if he and Biden both go and AF1 falls in the flames. We get President Boehnless Chicken?!?
Actually it is not.
Boulder, Denver, Vail an Aspen are liberal - that’s where the largest populations are. Or I should say the districts are drawn to give dems the advantage.
Douglas and Arapaho Counties are more conservative.
BHO won the state by about 8% in 2008.
We may have this all wrong. He could be heading to Cheyenne Mountain and the NORAD Bunker.
Doesn’t matter how obozo gets there. 30 miles around the President period. Looks like the firefighting plane will be grounded for the @$$(.)
Is he calling it a campaign stop?
But, word is he is not bringing $100B in dollars; no, he is providing relief in the form of $100B in matches and lighter fluid.
Let him go to some liberal area of Colorado and put them in the danger.
From the daily Caller: Most Conservative Counties in the U.S.
18. El Paso County, Colo.
Largest city: Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs is the right-wing stronghold of Colorado. The Air Force Academy and NORAD are based in the county. About 19 percent of the population are civilian veterans, one of the highest rates in the nation. The other conservative influences are social: Focus on the Family is located in Colorado Springs, as are many other parachurch organizations. Colorado Springs was named by Money Magazine as the best big city to live in 2006.

I once lived for a short time in Woodland Park, many years ago. The house I rented had a lovely view of Pike’s Peak. Wonder if it’s still there...
He’s probably thinking which of the 57 states he’s in.
reuter rooter bah. not as bad as abc news with diane sawyer.
tonight she asked how close the fire is to the city center. 3-4 miles wanting the stupid people who get their news from the alphabet networks to think the fire could engulf the city.
channel 7 thedenverchannel.com has been overriding national programs to bring clear, concise, professional reporting of the 3 main front range fires. no hype, no bs speculation no mention of any danger to downtown and no saying the same crap every 30 minutes like fox, cnn weather channel.
bho should have been here last night and flown over the fire with the governor. he would have seen what his afterlife residence is going to look like.
If I were Hickenlooper, I would tell Obama to find something else to do. Unless he wants to bring in an army of people willing to work to undo the damage he and his party have done to the mountain West over the past several decades, he needs to stay wherever he is and shut up.
And yet BHO still won Colorado in 2008.
Yep.
Most likely a fly over on the way to a California fund raiser. Just a publicity stunt but it’ll be disruptive nonetheless.
Think Dear Leader has the strength to start a chain saw or the ability to have water hit him without melting? He won’t be helping.
You got that right. He can’t appear uninterested.
What’s he gonna do, spit on it? Blame Bush?
These fires would be more controllable if 0blaba worked
on getting the EPA out of the forest.
You know, actually did something right.
Hickenlooper is a total bozo he hasn’t even requested a declaration of a disaster area for the state and he thinks Obama is so cool the moment he sets food on Colorado ground .... poof... the fires will all go out.....
LoL.
with the plane carrying a banner requesting money and a number to call with credit card ready.
“This is a very conservative area.”
I grew up in this area and it was a conservative right to work state. Then the liberals, environmentalist, hippies and wacos moved in and took over. The state is now very liberal in the urban areas and will go Obama in November.
Or a fund raiser with the Hollyweird elite in Vail or Aspen.
We’ll see but I’m afraid you’re probably right.
I’m in S W Colo. (La Plata County) and 0bama is losing ground here.
Same thing has been happening to Texas over the past 15 years or so. This also used to be a great state, but now is getting close to a take over by the Progressives, hippies (Austin, TX), queers (Dallas, Houston, Austin), feminists, marixist supporters, etc, etc, etc....
Great, everywhere he goes disaster follows. What happens when he visits a disaster already happening?
Rahm Emanuel, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste"
"DENVER President Barack Obama will fly to Colorado Springs Friday to tour the scene of the Waldo Canyon Fire, which continues to ravage homes and forest on the edge of Colorados second most populous city.
The President called Gov. John Hickenlooper and Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach on Friday to be updated on the fires burning across the state and to inform them of his plan to visit the fire lines Friday, the White House confirmed.
The President reiterated his administrations focus, through the US Forest Service as well as the Department of Interior and FEMA, on continuing to bring all resources to bear to assist local responders in Colorado and a number of Western States currently being impacted by fires, according to the White House...."

Some men just want to watch the world burn.
Obviously you’ve never lit a fart.
According to my friend who is an air traffic controller in San Jose - yes
Damn is there no end to this?
Maybe it’s fitting he’s going to see raging fires then, as Obamacare will be going down in flames tomorrow.
I thought about it later after I typed it, but think of it more as a high pressure fuel vapor bomb, sucks all the air out of the surrounding atmosphere and you suffocate. Because it’s going to be coming out of those big ol’ butt cheeks very, very fast.
Unless Air Farce Zero is prepared to perform low level water drops, I don’t think his skinny butt flying in here and grounding fire fighting flights is going to go over so well.
Every time the President’s plane flies there is a 30 mile TFR put up around it.
I just do not know.
I have decided fight or drink or drink while fighting, no matter what I am sickened.
It just makes me weep.
Another disaster visits Colorado.
I do not know Colorado very well, is the fire in a conservative area of the state or a liberal part? It all comes down to politics with obama
See Post 16.
Maybe George Clooney or Fat Al Sharpton will show up. Bad things often happen in threes.
Haven’t we suffered enough in Colorado?
What? You mean there isn’t already enough hot air in the region?
