Mourners remember Rodney King at Hollywood hills funeral

(Reuters) - Hundreds of mourners remembered Rodney King, a symbol of racial tension in Los Angeles and catalyst for sweeping law-enforcement reforms after his 1991 beating by police officers, at a public memorial ahead of his burial on Saturday.

"He tried to use his scars to heal a nation," the Reverend Al Sharpton told a news conference outside the Forest Lawn Hall of Liberty in the Hollywood Hills, where the remembrance service was held.

Results of toxicology and tissue studies were still pending, authorities said, and there were questions about how King, who by all accounts was an avid swimmer, ended up drowning in his own pool.

"You rise above your scars to heal. Rodney King was a healer. He turned his scars into stars," Sharpton said.

The service was held in the auditorium which was also used for the private 2009 funeral of Michael Jackson before the pop star's public memorial service at the Staples Center.

With any luck, everyone is “getting along” where Rodney has been sent.

CALIFORNIA v. RODNEY KING

In November 1989, Rodney Glen King attempted to rob a Korean grocery store, but failed. Rodney King first purchased a pack of gum, but then pulled out a tire iron and demanded that the owner, Tae Suk Baik, open the cash register.

The Korean instead grabbed King, and began beating him with a wood pole. King fled. Rodney King was arrested ten days later, and quickly plea bargained to a two year prison sentence. King was paroled on December 27, 1990.

King actually had a long arrest record:

http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/lapd/kingarrests.html

Beat his wife in 1987, tried to rob the store in 1989.

Lets not forget that his beating occured after a 115 mph chase, in 1991.

Picked up a transvestite prostitute in 1991....well, alrighty.

Hit his second wife in 1992.

A trio od DUI’s and associted crashes.

Inured his 16 y/o daughter in 1999...classy.

In 2001, indecent exposure and using PCP....wasn’t PCP the whole reason the cops couldn’t get him subdued, 10 years prior.

He has a long arrest list, for sure. He was a deeply damaged man...I hope that somewhere along the way, he found meaning in his life, beyond drugs and violence.

Snif snif.... The way he could do PCP, and drive a car was truly amazing.

He will be missed. ... by the LEO's that were too far away to make contact!
