(AP) Campfires, fireworks and even lit cigarettes can spark wildfires. In the tinder-dry West, there is growing concern about the threat from guns.
This year, officials believe target shooting or other firearms use sparked at least 21 wildfires in Utah and nearly a dozen in Idaho. Shooting is also believed to have caused fires in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.
Those concerns come as states grapple with ways to cut the risk of new fires ahead of the Fourth of July holiday when many people fire their guns to celebrate the nation's independence.

Global warming has guns! Who knew.
Bull Obama.
Skanky, stinky bull Obama.
They need a guns for fireworks trade program to save the tree's.
I hear they cause itchy teeth, constipation and heartburn. They also interfere with The Won’s great plans for the USA....
Our outdoor gun range is in the dry foothills and won’t allow steel core ammo on the rifle ranges.
AP ought to go out there into the 'wilderness' and shoot guns for a few days to see if they can get a spark... not that I'm implying they're suck-ups who buy into any liberal thought thrown at them.
“...many people fire their guns to celebrate the nation’s independence...”

I’ve never done that, and I don’t know anyone who has ever done that.
Am I missing out on something?
Interesting this meme comes just now, when F&F has
failed to work as intended.
They are desperate to disarm us.
Environmentalists are a deceitful and despicable lot, a danger to themselves and others.
What is next?
A turn in your gun to vote. program?
It could come to that.
Democrats, vicious in defeat, more vicious when they win.
Sounds like the teenagers in Little Rock who were firing at a mason jar filled with gasoline with a .22.
So is this why Janet went there?? Never let a Crisis slip by.
If F&F had “succeeded” ...it would have explained The Won’s lack of preparation for the November contest...he hadn’t planned for there to be one!!!
>> there is growing concern
Go to Hell.
Has anybody tried to post comments to the yahoo article? Won’t let me.
I have been target shooting for 50 years and have never seen any of my lead bullets cause a spark.
But...but...but I thought it was President Bush who was going around starting all of the fires.
and their proof is??? feh...
Yet the headline will be in the newspapers tomorrow.
like Mark Twain said, A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.
Let’s see, cars and ATVs start wildfires with the heat of the exhaust system, which is why they are not allowed in a lot of dry grassy areas in CA for example. Smokers and errant cigarettes start fires.
There are a more smokers and drivers than people firing guns on any given day. Shazaam, careful, we can’t let common sense get in the way.
I could put out the fires with my urine before I could get a liberal to use logic and reason.
I had a series of email exchanges regarding liberal race baiting with an Dem uncle today. I quit. I can no longer deal with the mental illness of bigoted liberals (I know, bigoted liberal is redundant, it just bears repeating). I’m just going to remove him from my address book before I get nasty and my wife drops the hammer on me (he’s her uncle).
So, "officials", name names.
Who were these gun nuts who caused fires with their weapons?
Waiting.....waiting.....
Heavy duty industrial grade stupid.
Shooting at targets is extremely unlikely to cause fires.
This is a very old and worn-out saw of gun-grabbers. Back in the '60's a bunch of us (gun owners, ranchers, farmers in NM) decided to try to start a fire with rifles and handguns while shooting at targets. We used dry-as-a-bone fine prairie grass immediately behind the targets, placed on top of various kinds of rocks - purposely looking to create sparks.
After more than two hours of failing to start a grass fire, we finally turned to gasoline poured on top of the grass, and fired point-blank at the grass. Some 60 to 80 rounds later, we finally got a fire going.
Since many people nail their targets to trees, we also tried to set fire to chunks of pine trees that we brought to the trials. After firing hundreds of rounds at targets, we again had to resort to gasoline before we could get a fire going - and again had to fire at near point-blank to make it happen.
Not one of us denied that a spark could cause a fire under exactly the right conditions. But all of us agreed that exactly the right conditions are extremely rare, otherwise we would have seen far more fires in the Black Range than had occurred in our lifetimes.
In most Western states, the most common cause of fires has been lightening - a natural cause - not campfires, not guns, not human activity. Yes human activity has caused accidental fires, but not nearly in number compared to lightening. But, worse than that are forest fires deliberately set by human beings - that happening far more frequently in the recent 10-15 years.
You got that right!
nonsense. maybe tracer or APIT, but not conventional ammo.
this is a witch hunt
You got that right!
For YEARS people have been shooting in the desert, in the summer, and just now suddenly there is a rash of fires started by it?
I call bullshit.
But, I'm guessing - they knew it would 'explode' - but it didn't - it just caused a fire. Am I right?
You’re presuming they thought about what would happen. I make no such assumption.
they only make sparks in Hollywood!
Next thing you know, someone will blame the fires on Muslim terrorists.
In southern Arizona, almost all of the wildfires are human-caused, even though we have a lot of lightning. Either some idiot threw a cigarette butt, or the illegals left a smoldering campfire at one of their overnight stops. I’ve never heard of a fire caused by shooting in the 15 years I’ve lived here.
This is the vaguest, most incendiary blarney, so obviously aimed at dismantling the Second Amendment. “Never let a crisis go to waste.” Like those old scare reports, ‘an SUV ran over three pedestrians’ that Rush used to make fun of./ yawn// rolling eyes.
***I have been target shooting for 50 years and have never seen any of my lead bullets cause a spark.***
In the military we were using tracers and started a few fires but NONE with regular copper jacket lead.
Well, it must be true, then.
</sarcasm>
Right with you.
But leaving dead wood and underbrush creates a situation where just about anything can start a forest fire.
And the environuts will not allow any clearing of dead wood, so as to cause a wildfire that they can then blame on what ever the cause du jour is.
Responsible tree farmers clear dead wood so that fires don’t start in the first place.
Environmental goofs and govt stooges have no clue about responsible forestry.
never let a crisis go to waste.
AMEN
...many people fire their guns to celebrate the nations independence... - Ive never done that, and I dont know anyone who has ever done that. Am I missing out on something?
Mexicans do that. In Santa Ana, CA they shoot in the air in the direction of rival neighborhoods. Third World tribalism at its best.
The usual AP lies. The big fires in Colorado were all started by lightening strikes into forests that are tinder-dry because we’re in the first year of a typical 11-year sun-spot-cycle drought.
Guns cause forest fires in swing states. What an A-hole!
I agree that a significant number of the fires started are arson. Have someone check out how many of the houses that burned were up for sale. That was a pretty common activity in Californicate back in the 70s when whole subdivisions were torched for the insurance money. Another aspect is the common criminal getting even with the government. Target shooting, I doubt it. One article alleged that two target shooters admitted that target shooting caused the fire ... I’m extremely doubtful ... sounds like trying to cover up a fire started through carelessness such as a campfire, cigarettes, etc.
This is an urban phenomenon — NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles — and is an aberration. Responsible shooters do not do this. I think it was imported by Muslims from the Middle East who fire at the sky for no apparent reason other than to ward off demons, celebrate a birth of a goat or camel or human, or a bowel movement.
What crap...try to start a fire by shooting. Yet another insipid attempt to give reasons why people shouldn’t have guns. These anti-2nd-Amendment pinheads won’t give up.
