GOP critics attack Romney's safe approach

A chorus of prominent conservative voices is worrying aloud that Republican candidate Mitt Romney's play-it-safe strategy is jeopardizing his chance to win the presidency.

As President Barack Obama's campaign intensifies criticism of Romney's background, influential Republicans — right-leaning leaders in business and the media — charge that Romney's message on the economy and other issues is short on detail and muddled at best.

In an editorial Thursday, The Wall Street Journal said the Romney campaign is "slowly squandering an historic opportunity."

"The Romney campaign thinks it can play it safe and coast to the White House by saying the economy stinks and it's Mr. Obama's fault," the newspaper said. "We're on its email list and the main daily message from the campaign is that 'Obama isn't working.' Thanks, guys, but Americans already know that. What they want to hear from the challenger is some understanding of why the president's policies aren't working and how Mr. Romney's policies will do better."

The harsh critique comes as Romney nears the end of a weeklong vacation at his New Hampshire lakeside home, where he has been almost totally out of the public eye, except for a brief Fourth of July appearance. Polls show Obama slightly leading Romney nationally and in several states that are critical in the hunt to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the Nov. 6 election.

Palin/West is looking really good right now. As a very successful businessman Romney is/was 100% risk adverse and that, I'm afraid may cost us the election!

Well, be thankful it isn’t a yacht, it’s a mid-range (about 26’) production boat, perfect for a very large family. A small Riva of the same size would cost 3-4 times as much.

People are reading way too much into these vacation images. At least Romney`s boat is purchased with his own $, vs. the countless taxpayer-funded million$ spent on vacations by Obama. By contrast, taking a day to unwind shouldn`t an issue.

Do you also complain when your favorite NASCAR driver makes a pitstop?

People are reading way too much into these vacation images.

Sigh. When the economy is in shambles with millions out of work and only dreaming about their own humble vacations, and you are a presumptive nominee politician running for the Presidency, then you do NOT go on a lush lakeside vacation at a million dollar mansion and then allow yourself to be photographed cruising around in a fancy boat or jet ski. It's Politics 101.

We (rightfully) gave John Kerry hell for doing the same thing, but now you're suggesting that Mitt should get a pass?

I agree there is a chance. A damned slim one.

I never supported Romney except as an alternative to our would be Kenyan Dick tator.

During the primary’s when Gingrich was under attack, and then when Santorum was under attack, and ruined Gingrich’s chances, the Democrats quietly let Romney slide. We all knew the Democrats were setting us up, and the leadership of the Republican party fell for it hook, line , and sinker.
Many Democrats even stated that Romney would be their choice, but still many Republicans fell for it, and voted in this mealy mouthed mushy rich boy, with the liberal record.

I would dance with glee if Allan West, Sarah Palin,Paul Ryan, or any Conservative not mentioned could be drafted, but we both know it isn’t going to happen.

The leadership of the Republican party is not Conservative, in fact they are barely escaping being called as progressive as a moderate Democrat. If there is such a thing.

Perhaps when the last chance at the Convention is over and we KNOW we are stuck with eating this s**t sandwich more of the anti-Romney force will realize it’s him or the Kenyan.

It is almost beyond belief that Democrats can look at the damage to our country that the Kenyan has done and still vote for him. This isn’t the country our founders set up, That’s for sure.

Romney has raised hundreds of millions and leads Obama in the swing states. Why (dedacted) does he need to listen to the circle firing-squad gang? Because they now feel left out?

Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. It is approximately 21 miles (34 km) long (northwest-southeast with a 14 miles open fetch) and from 1 to 9 miles wide...

A 26’ boat is logical!

That's a very good possibility. The not so grand old party shut Palin up because she was gun ho and now they're complaining about Mitt being too safe. Makes no sense other than they want to hand it all over to the dark side once again.

Actually, we gave it to Kerry because he claimed he wasn’t rich when he was. Mitt Rhino can vacation where he wants but needs to attack Obama like he was a Republican candidate.

Pray for America

I don’t get your point. I’m no fan of Romney’s but so what if he is enjoying his boat over the holidays? What does that have to do with anything? I wish I had one to enjoy myself.

So appearances don't matter in politics?

I also find the double standard here somewhat amusing.

The Romneyites and neo-Romneyites around here hell seem bent on doing this:

Well then they can write him a letter or go visit him?

Nope, they go to the nearest medium the MSM is monitoring and let fly knowing that they would pick up on it and splash it all over?

And they STILL want Romney to follow their advice?
