Professor: 'Jesus was a Muslim'
Campus Reform ^

Posted on 07/11/2012 2:32:01 PM PDT by oliverdarcy

The head of the religion department at Luther College in Iowa recently argued that Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity, was in fact, a Muslim.

“‘Was Jesus a Muslim?" asks Prof. Robert F. Shedinger in the beginning of a book he published this year entitled Was Jesus a Muslim? " I will answer with a very qualified yes."

In a recent interview Shedinger also defended his controversial thesis explaining that a Muslim undergraduate student had sent him on academic odyssey that culminated with him asking himself "Was Jesus a Muslim?"

"Even as a Christian I have to answer yes to that," said Shedinger, who is the head of the religion department at Luther College in Iowa.

Shedinger also argued that Islam is a better fit for Jesus since it is not a religion but a “social justice movement.”

Luther College as in “Martin Luther”?

Yes, unfortunately....they are ELCA. A professor at an ELCA seminary a few years ago proposed that’s Christ’s death and resurrection is not necessary for our salvation. The ELCA is widely regarded as disgustingly heterodox (to put it mildly) by other Lutherans, who basically cringe whenever they hear those four letters. Luther’s name has absolutely no bearing on their theology...it’s really only a fluke that they are still called Lutheran. Oh, they think that Luther would agree with them, but....then again they think that anything goes.

I’m a Missouri Synod gal. For those of you who don’t know, Matt Harrison who spoke at the congressional hearing for the HHS contraception mandate, is LC-MS as well. The main difference between ELCA and LC-MS is that ELCA doesn’t believe the Word of God to be true, and the LC-MS does.

Check out this Youtube video. :)

Professor of religious studies. Like being an astronomer
cause I know about astronomical studies.

But the Christ, y’know, the Yeshua guy, will forgive the
professor, if he repents from his sin of unbelief.
There is still hope in Gods promises. And God is not
capricious in his willingness to forgive repentants.

And you wonder How America got So Screwed up with people like This being the role model other people PAYING for an education have to suck up to to earn their degree.

These are the people who produce the Morons that enact public policy throughout Every sector of our daily lives.

Was it not amazing? My whole family is Lutheran, and my relatively unemotional dad started crying during that speech (if you ask my mom, anyway), he was so moved. My husband and his supervising pastor (he is on vicarage learning to be a pastor) cheered also. I was stuck at work. :p

(But I later found out how awesome it had been!)

I have to tell you—I respect Catholics far more than I respect ELCAs.

Easy, because he's God. HE can do whatever he likes.

Wait a second. But if he's Muslim, then he's no longer a god, and merely a prophet. Which means he couldn't be part of a 'religion' that was created 600 years later!

Wow, the whole Jesus was a Muslim thing is kind of fruit loopy, but equating Islam with a social justice movement is the kind of idiotic sophistry that only an academic intellectual from our modern P.C. infected University Campus could come come up with and actually believe to be true.

Can anyone come up with facet of Islam that is remotely oriented towards social justice as we understand it (unless, of course, you define ‘Social Justice” as beheading all of the infidels in society who disagree with your particular interpretation of the Koran)

How do you say “my brains were scrabled then sucked out by aliens” because that is apparently what happened to this professor’s. And at a Lutheran College?.. I suggest he go read about what the Bible actually says Jesus purpose was here on earth, and for good measure go read Martin Luthor’s belief about faith through Grace, alone..

Really inconsistent (or stupid..literally, either that or so blind by Satan spirtually/these may be the same thing..).

They don’t want to believe Jesus (in what He actually lived, did and said), therefore they call Him a “liar”, but they also claim that Jesus actually was a good person/prophet or whatever. He doesn’t give us that option, either He told the Truth (and was the Truth and the Way and The Life) or He’s not.. Give ya a clue (to those who don’t believe, not that you personally don’t TS..) HE IS

Bye bye prof....

No, no! They love this crap. From the article:

“The administration is very very comfortable with the proposal, with the book, and with what his statements about this situation are,” said Jerry Johnson, the school’s Director of Public Information. ”[T]he ground he is breaking with this book is not anything exactly earthshaking.”

Johnson added that Shedinger’s thesis had not stirred up on any controversy or opposition on campus where “the members or our religion department are very respecting and have great respect for each other’s work.”

If I were on this faculty, I would write a book saying that Mohamhead was actually a Christian, but he went insane and dreamed up a really warped religion that went against everything Christianity stood for. He just pretended it was the Religion of Peace.

These crackheads, by their own admission, would respect my thesis.

From the Islamic POV, Muhammad was not the first Muslim or founder of Islam as of 1400 years ago; he was the restorer and final, last (not initial) prophet.

They consider Islam (lit "submission") to be the first and natural religion of every person who has ever lived: the first religion of Adam and Eve, and of every human being. Every baby is considered a Muslim, at least incipiently.

Thus Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus, etc. were Muslims: because they (by their definition)"submitted" to God.

The kink comes in when they say that the Jews and the Christians produced perverted Scriptures which actually diverged from the real, divinely commanded truth. Thus the (OT and NT) Scriptural accounts Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus were false, but only because the Jewish and Christian Scriptures covered up the truth about these holy Muslim prophets.

It's all extremely dubious, since there is no archeological, documentary/bibliographic, or historic evidence of what the Muslims say. And as you may notice from their history, they are avid to destroy ancient archaeological sites. But --- aside from lack of evidence!! --- their view is consistent with THEIR Scriptures, and that's enough for them.

It's absolutely worth doing the research. I am pursuing it myself, although not very systematically or comprehensively. But what I do see:

I think that's one reason why Muslims blow up historic sites (Egyptian, Chinese, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Christian) and always have. The external evidence is that Islam in fact did NOT exist before Mohammad. It's very plain that no ancient people anywhere were Muslims before Mohammad.

To this day, Islamic "scholars" sternly forbid Muslims to do serious evidence-based study about the ancient history or "roots" of any culture --- inluding their own!

The claim that Jesus was a Muslim is actually standard, orthodox Islam...something all Muslims believe.

Thanks for the mention.  I wasn't aware of that.  Imagine us labeling all Arabs of the Ishmael line, Jews.  Bet they'd love that.

They lump Jesus, all the OT prophets, David, Moses, and of course Abraham (and ESPECIALLY Ishmael) ALL into the “Muslim” camp... In doing this they try to co-opt all the godly men before Mohammed, and deny the legitimacy of Judaism and Christianity, as they these—and the Bible—are supposedly “corruptions” of true Islam.

And as you mention in a moment here, we ( I also) are guilty of this to a certain degree ourselves, in that Jews didn't exist in name until later.  Where lineage goes back to share origins, it is reasoned to at least mention the connection.  Beyond that, there is a problem.  And of course, taking it to the level Islam does, it's way beyond the pale.

Of course there is no evidence the Tanak (Old Testament) or the New Testament were corrupted...but, facts and real history have never stopped belief in Islam.  Safe to say...  ;^)

It’s not as odd as it may seem, as we tend to think of Abraham as a Jew—though that name only came over 1,000 years later through one tribe named after one of Abraham’s 12 great-grandsons, Judah.

Yes, and I appreciate the mention.  It's easy to get caught up in this if you're not careful and precise.

For a professor though, buying into an explicitly sectarian religious claim, is totally miserable though. I’d expect this from some Imam somewhere...but a professor? Sad.

Yes, you're right on target here.  I will say that there is so much anti-White/anti-Christian thinking out there these days, that almost any tenet of these groups core beliefs, is fair game to certain professors.

It's basically open season on these demographics.

Where tolerance is demanded or else, these folks get away with just about anything.

I am quite strident in my thought that if a college, university, or even K-12 school wants federal dollars, they must be able to show that their staff is diverse. Schools where 85-90% of the staff are card carrying Leftists who hate the United States should not exist.

For as G.K. Chesterton said.

But how can they lay claim to any of that since Islam wasn’t “invented” until AD600 or thereabouts?

(More like about AD 635)

Only because Mohammed said so. That's it.

Another oddity is the relates to the artistic nature of the written Arabic. Orthodox Islam teaches that one cannot possibly understand or even read the Koran (as it's the holy language which God dictated (not inspired, like the Bible) to Mohammed himself)--UNLESS you read it in the original Arabic. Observant Muslims therefore MUST learn Arabic...

This allows Muslim scholars to dismiss most Western critics of Islam--as supposedly misunderstanding, or mistranslating any given Koranic verse. It's actually forbidden for Muslims to read translations...

That would be like expecting ALL Christians to learn Greek--otherwise we could not read the New Testament... Think how stultifying that would be...(and how Greek civilization would therefore become religiously--and culturally-- imperialistic...)This is a reason why Arab culture is so dominant in Islam, as to them God only speaks Arabic (and if you don't...who are you to tell them about God?)

And of course...the most notorious doctrine--agreed on by all four major schools of Islamic law--is that any Muslim (and all you have to do to BE a Muslim is to be born of a Muslim father (see Obama...)) who apostates--stops believing Islam (by becoming a Christian...or Hindu...or atheist...)--SHOULD BE EXECUTED. That's right--even so called moderate Muslims accept this, as it's plainly stated in the Koran--and all varieties of Muslims accept it as dogma.

It's really a very (very) irrational religion, on a very basic level.

One can be a moderate Muslim....but only by being moderately (not fully) Muslim, as there is no real "moderate" Islam.
