Drudge tips Condi Rice for Mitt Romney veep pick. But is she too moderate and too tied to Bush?
The Telegraph ^ | 7/13/12 | Tim Stanley

On Thursday night, Mitt Romney sent out an email to supporters promising news on his Vice President selection “sometime soon.” A few hours later, the Drudge Report announced that Condi Rice – the former Secretary of State under George W Bush – was “near the top of the list.” I quote: “It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.” That’s it. But from small acorns are great headlines made.

Condi Rice would be a risky veep pick for Romney. It’s true that she’s experienced, respected and liked by establishment Republicans. But she has never won an election and she is associated with George W Bush – a man mildly less popular than arthritis. Her selection would widely be regarded as a desperate bid to reach out to both women and African-American voters, while probably not making an impact upon either.

Worst of all, Rice might split the base. There was some speculation in 2008 that she voted for Obama, and she can be best described as a libertarian on the moral issues that matter to religious conservatives. On abortion: “I don't like the government involved in these really hard moral decisions … While I don't think the country is ready for legislation to overturn Roe v. Wade, certainly I cannot imagine why one would be in favor of partial-birth abortion. I also can't imagine why one would take these decisions out of the hands of the family.” On gay marriage: “I don't ever want anybody to be denied rights within our country.” Selecting a woman with these views would only confirm the suspicion that Mitt is himself a Massachusetts moderate. He doesn’t need that kind of bad publicity.

She is a brilliant person who could verbally destroy Barack Obama and show him for the intellectual midget he his.

She is the real thing, a black woman who lived the true life of a poor southern black person and who surmounted the difficulties to rise to the top. She is the real thing.....

The demand for super conservative values is trumped by super brilliance and shear ability. Condi could be a great supplement to the Romney effort.

My fear is that Mitt is going to go for the race/gender card and sell out everything to be able to play that.

Has "identity politics" written all over it. The "stupid" party's attempt to play a game that the left has written the rules for is a recipe for disaster.

Liberal Condi would be absolutely no help to Romney. He needs a name bigger than his to win decisively! We need someone who is against LOST and sees the UN for what it is: an America hating organization of little empires like Zimbobyou seeking to take over the Hoover Dam and all of America’s federal land.

Condi was a piss poor SOS serving a RINO, who learned her ‘craft’ where Albright learned hers.

If he’s going to pick a relatively new senator he should look no further than Rand Paul!

He’s one of the few genuine articles.

This is the Harriet Miers moment we’ve all been dreading. Pretty freaking early. Pretty freaking bad.

Rand would be a great choice, but I'm thinking right now he's needed in the Senate, to counterbalance the weak, withered, wimpy Mitch McConnell.

Relax. It's not going to happen.

Like I said earlier, it's a feint, which accomplishes two objectives: 1) Throwing the media off the Bain goosechase (worked, didn't it?), and 2) Letting Condi catch all the buzz while Mitt continues to vet other possibilities.

Everyone knows she's too intricately tied to the Bush Administration.... it isn't going to be her.

Condoleeza Rice is a "conservative" like Colon Bowel is a "conservative."

Condi Rice Lovers

Please list her top five acomplishments as Secretary of State.

(Brokering a cease fire in the 2006 Israeli/Hexbollah war to save Hezbollah from utter destruction and to allow them to rearm and regain control of Lebanon doesn't count)

"She is pro nation building (as an RP supporter, you ought to be very, very opposed to that)"

I was with you up until you said this...and this...

"She buys into the AGW fraud "

Most RP supporter I know (and I know a lot of them) buy into 911 conspiracies too.

If I had to contrast the two conspiracies, it would be easy to see that the wrong-paul 911 conspiracy kooks greatly out-kook the AGW kooks.

Rice is an utterly stupid selection and whoever is advising Rummy had better decide which side of the centerline this candidate is on!

Rice is a globalist pure and simple and is as far from being conservative as Nutsy Pelousy.
