White House expands Title IX support to science, tech

Posted on 07/14/2012 7:22:56 AM PDT by TigerClaws

WASHINGTON, June 20 (Reuters) - The White House announced new measures Wednesday to help increase the number of women in the science, math and technology fields as part of a celebration for the 40-year anniversary of a law prohibiting discrimination in education based on gender.

The new guidelines are reinforcements to the law, known as Title IX.

** n 1972, when Title IX was passed, 43 percent of students enrolling in degree-granting institutions were women, compared to 57 percent of new students in 2010

NOte for later.

Phi Beta Cons on National Review Online had mentioned this possibility.

I truly thought it was a joke.

that would destroy science and engineering
at US universities and colleges, still #1 in the world.

Re-electing Obama is getting expensive.

It’s costing taxpayers a ton of money to re-elect this Piece of dirt.

Why does he need campaign funds when he has the key to the treasury and is using it. being an incumbent sure has it’s advantages. Wonder who he will try to buy next.

In 1972, when Title IX was passed, 43 percent of students enrolling in degree-granting institutions were women, compared to 57 percent of new students in 2010.

I believe it is correct that significantly more minority women are attending college than minority men. Has anyone seen stats that breakdown the current percentage of women and men attending college down by race?

I wonder how much of this increase in women is common to all races, and how much of it might be a reflection of the percentages of minority women and men attending college?

There are two middle schools in my District. One school received a grant for a “Girl’s Only” Engineering/Robotics club. Imagine the uproar if there was a Boy’s only club.

The Academic Awards assembly in my school at the end of the year demonstrated the issue. Over 90% of the recipients were girls. Honor Society? - 80% girls and most of the boys were in to make it look “fair”. I live in a fairly conservative area.

Here's a partial answer to my question:

The gaps between women and men are especially stark in certain minority populations. Among black students, women earned 69 percent of associate, 66 percent of bachelor's, 72 percent of master's, and 66 percent of doctoral degrees in 2007-8.

More Black Women than Black Men Continue to Enroll in 4-Year Colleges

I think most or all of this current gap is being caused by the big disparities in the number of minority women and men who are attending college, but the article writers don't bother to give a breakdown by race, though we get minute breakdowns by race concerning many other issues.

When you want to make changes to a law...
...doesn't it require another law get passed...
           ...you know, by...
...what was that group called again....
                     "Congress"?!?

It is also a sign of desparation! He is fighting to get the single women vote. This is good news, in a small way. In the larger sense, this is a disaster.

What an effing joke. Men and women have the same IQ in general but they get it in different ways. Women’s IQs have a much narrower Bell Curve. Most are clustered near the norm with far fewer under the extremes. There are more very bright men and more woefully stupid men than women. The plain un-PC truth is few women gravitate to math, physics, and the physical sciences because few women’s brains are wired to excel at those disciplines.

Just place a 25-year moratorium on men being allowed to do anything other than work at fast-food joints.

That's fair.

43% of degree-seeking students being women = bad
