Mitt Romney's tax returns had nothing to do with Sen. John McCain's decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, according to the Arizona Republican, saying he chose the former Alaska governor because she was a "better candidate."
McCain received more than two decades worth of Romney's tax returns as the former Massachusetts governor was undergoing the vetting process four years ago, far more than Romney has released publicly in the 2012 campaign. Democrats have questioned whether McCain saw something untoward in those tax returns and decided to choose Palin instead.
But on Tuesday, McCain flatly rejected that assertion and grew angry at questions over his decision to choose Palin over Romney.
Asked why he chose not to go with Romney, McCain said: "Oh come on, because we thought that Sarah Palin was the better candidate. Why did we not take [Tim] Pawlenty, why did we not take any of the other 10 other people. Why didnt I? Because we had a better candidate, the same way with all the others. ... Come on, why? Thats a stupid question."

I think a rousing “no kidding” fits right about here.
Palin was a better candidate than Mclaim!
Which goes to prove that even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Gov. Sarah Palin would be a better candidate than McCain and Romney combined!
Sorry, Sen McCain, in all fairness Sarah Palin was not prepared for a national candidacy in 2008. In 2012 she is showing much better grasp of national issues and Romney would be smart to pick her on the ticket. There would be none of the fumbling when asked about the Bush doctrine, anymore. She is now fit and ready to be very effective against Obama-Biden.
Freedom of speech makes it easier to spot the Idiots
Thank you Senator John McCain for standing up for your running mate.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!
STFU John.
Bingo! Much,much,much,much better!
Ya sure don’t see him being labeled a “maverick” any more, do ya.
Shut up Mccain.
Just shut up.
And go dig your fat daughter out of the mud and herd her back to the hog house.
And, by the way, thanks for purposefully throwing the election. You own much of what ails America today.
I have always thought that McClown was nothing but a closet dhimmicrat.
How the people of AZ could vote for that guy again, after his 2008 defeat, is a total mystery considering that, at one time the state produced a Goldwater.
I have found something about Sen. McCain with which I agree.
John, let’s see if Romney has any more fight in him than you do. I think he may already have you beat. I used to scream at the TV during those pitiful debates and wonder what you were on that made you smile and ignore every attack obama aimed at you. And when he said something that was wrong, you just smiled and ignored it.
Romney will not win this election unless he teams up with Palin.
None of the conservatives want Romney, he has to pick Sarah if he expects any of them to vote for him.
No REALLY!?!?
An Honest to G-D Conservative VS A Milquetoast Democrat-Lite Progressive who has about as much bang as a Baking Soda Volcano.
Yeah I can see why they didn't go with "Unpopular" Sarah too!

....but you took care of that right Juan?
McCain once again made me laugh, but I don’t think that’s what he was trying to do. I like that McCain stood up for Sarah....but sheesh, do you want to back up that bus and run over Willard a few more times??
Hey...no fan of Willard. But he sure enough doesn’t need old cranky pants to imply that Willard wasn’t up to the task of being VP.
Well, actually, we all knew that part already. It’s just that McCain did NOT need to say it right now.
Sheesh John....
Even to this day I see that and go, “WTF?”
Sarah is not his only out, there is West.
worldwide!
Big Tiger, I agree...
McCain was a crappy midshipman...he got in because his daddy was an admiral.
McCain was a crappy pilot...he ejected, got shotdown...He served, though which is more than I can say for Clinton and Obama. Even W was a jet jockey which takes a lot of balls, I don’t care what people say...W didn’t crash any planes or lose any, like McCain did...
McCain was a crappy senator...what did he do as a senator besides nothing except for McCain Feingold which got shot down...do I see a pattern?
McCain absolutely sucked as a presidential candidate bordering on being senile...remember him suspending his run to go to Washington and be absolutely worthless during the financial crisis that started when the business community realized that Obama was going to be president after he dry gulched Hillary...when I think that I voted for him on the hope that he would defeat Obama, I just want to puke...
Now McCain is stabbing Romney in the back...
The country is going down in the next four years, irregardless. I am starting to hope that Obama wins so he gets the blame...which he will.
I am starting to regret that I gave my country six years of my life...
Thank you. Bravo. Well said.
Palin is the reason McCain did as well as he did. Definitely not a fan of McCain, but he did bring Palin to the national scene. I wish McCain and company had backed her up during the campaign though.
Sometimes I think that too, but I don't know if we can count on the terminally stupid figuring it out. He has about destroyed our country and look at how many people support him after all that he has done. Maybe some will figure it out when they have no food to eat, but it will be too late then.
McCain had to secure his base to avoid a rout. Palin helped him do that. Romney wouldn't have helped him as much.
But the idea that McCain could have won after the October economic mess or that Palin could have won it for him is going too far. She helped prevent the election from being a rout, but she wasn't going to pick up the three percent that would have made a victory.
Romney wouldn't have done that for McCain either. Probably, with some solid Republican voters staying home on election day, the result would have been worse than it was.
I should have said 5 percent. Same difference.
McCain knew from the start that he was just a stalking horse for the “Progressives” and was not meant to actually win. IMHO he chose Palin ‘cause she had nice legs and a great rack and would be better to look at during the campaign than the Mittens. /sarc She surprised him and the whole RNC and scared them so much that they thought they might win. Not knowing what to do then they figured out a way to blow the election by shooting their own candidate in the foot at every opportunity.
What votes that motard got was because of her to begin with.
My dog is a better candidate than McLousy.
STF up, loser.
From the Congressional Record:
Senator McCain on the GAO Report
On Sept. 19, 2000, Sen. McCain, speaking in opposition to the Conference Report on the 2001 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill advised the Senate of details from the GAOs report. As recorded in the Congressional Record, Sen. McCain stated,
The GAO now determines that $1.3 billionand some of those I will read: $974,000 for the Utah State Olympic Public Safety Command; $5 million for the Utah Communications Agency Network; $3 million to Olympic Regional Development Authority, upgrades at Mt. Van Hoevenberg Sports Complex; $2.5 million, Salt Lake City Olympics bus facilities; $2.5 million, Salt Lake City Olympics regional park-and-ride lots; $500,000, Salt Lake City Olympics transit bus loan, and on and on; $925,000 to allow the Utah State Olympic Public Safety Command to continue to develop and support a public safety program for the 2002 Winter Olympics; $1 million for the 2002 Winter Olympics security training; $2.2 million for the Charleston Water Conservancy District, UT, to meet sewer infrastructure needs associated with the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. What the Olympic games supposedly hosted and funded by Salt Lake City, which began in corruption and bribery, has now turned into is an incredible pork-barrel project for Salt Lake City and its environs. Sen. John McCain in the United States Senate, Sept. 19, 2000 - [Page S8731-S8748 - Congressional Record.]
Palin didn’t fumble the Bush Doctrine question. Even C. Krauthammer, no fan of Palin and the person who defined the various Bush Doctrines, said her answer was appropriate to the question. Gibson, in his smug manner, got the doctrine wrong. That interview was heavily edited to make it appear Palin was less informed than she was on the interview subjects. There are transcripts out there of her full answers and the edited version of what was seen. It was another example of the incompetence of the McCain campaign. I will agree though, that she is better prepared for the onslaught today than she was in 2008. More experience in that atmosphere will do that.
WOW n00bie
Dontcha think a woman would be a great top of the ticket ???
“W didnt crash any planes or lose any, like McCain did...”
To be fair, nobody was shooting at W either.
I’am inclined to agree with you but Michael Savage claims that if he did that he would lose like McCain did. He claims that even conservative women don’t like.
Just as many as it takes to stop the Willard, same as any other rat.
When we went to a McCain/Palin rally in Albuquerque, it was strikingly clear who the crowd was there to see - and it wasn’t Juan!
The rats are jumping ship.
Two faced Mittens was and still is a loser candidate. Economic sociaism/fascism combined with Marxist social ideology is a loser for everything that is free and breathing. Look at history!
Last I heard the mental giants in the Republican party aren’t even considering her to speak at the convention. So typical. Think maybe they’re afraid she’ll show up their candidate? Who knows with that bunch of schmucks!
I can only stomach so much of Savage’s egotistical nature. He calls Sarah, “Mush, Mush,” and has a solid hatred for her. Which makes me dislike him very much. He isn’t the sharp tack he thinks he is.
You are probably correct on substance, but as you said, the heavily edited interview gave the distinct impression that she was confused at best. General public seldom knows the detailed facts.
Palin certainly had more experience than the moron who was elected.
Sarah should have declined to be McCains’ VP. Hind sight is 20-20. She was worthy, but not ready. We lost a good one (Sarah not McCain) in a futile fight. It is all Bushs’ fault.
Not even a question, as a governor she had better executive experience. But remember 95% of voters are ignorant of details. What impressions they gather from watching MSM is what they know.
Aww, Johnny finally sticks up for the girl.
That I completely agree with. I can only take so much of him myself.
lol more experience than zerobama ain’t much to brag about.
Repeating, she was not ready for national contest in 2008. Now in 2012 she is quite ready.
“WOW n00bie Dontcha think a woman would be a great top of the ticket ???”
n00bie? In the “member since” only...
Absolutely I do - I would looove to see Sara on the ticket!!!
As for my comment about a “woman scorned”...I was referring to John McCain :)))
Carry on my friend!
