EDITORIAL: Boy Scouts stay straight

Freedom not to associate is an important American right

In the Boy Scout oath, a young man promises to keep himself morally straight. Despite pressure from homosexual activists, that pledge will continue to mean something.

On Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced that they would retain their policy excluding homosexuals from membership and leadership positions. The announcement followed a two-year review by a select committee, which came to the unanimous conclusion that it was “absolutely the best policy for the Boy Scouts.”

The rule had come under fire from homosexual groups recently after Jennifer Tyrrell was forced out of the leadership of her son’s Tiger Scout den because she is a lesbian. Also, last weekend, Eric Jones, a 19-year-old Eagle Scout, was fired from being a counselor at a Boy Scout camp in Missouri after revealing his homosexual preference.

Homosexual activists claim this is discrimination, but the dispute is actually over the freedom to associate. This was made plain in the 2000 Supreme Court case, Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, which directly addressed the scouts’ policy. The high court held that a New Jersey public-accommodations law did not require BSA to reinstate a homosexual assistant scoutmaster since that application of the law conflicted with the First Amendment right of freedom of association.

There is a reason the Boy Scouts of America turns out straight arrows.

I guess the BSA won’t be presenting the flag next month at the Democratic Convention.

On my Honor
I will do my best
To do my Duty
For my God and Country,
To obey the Scout Law.
To help other people at all times,
And to keep myself
Physically strong,
MENTALLY AWAKE and
MORALLY STRAIGHT

That’s the Scout Oath. Not much room for buggering reprobates in those lines.

The only solution to this “ tourde” that keeps popping up in the punch bowl is......Scouts out of the United Way; United Way OUT OF THE SCOUTS!

It’s nice to read that some institutions cannot be railroaded into doing what is politically correct, but basically wrong.

Same here; didn't know about the popcorn, though.
Sure would like to find ways to show support for BSA

Great news. Now if we could only purge the BSA of the feminazis who have infiltrated it to an alarming degree. BSA should be men and boys....like it was for me in the 50’s. I went to my nephew’s Eagle ceremony recently and I was shocked to see the staff was half women. Unbelievable. Lord BP would have puked. I’ll bet the Girl Scout leaders aren’t half men!

I’m sure your local troop would be happy to take a donation from you.

As for the popcorn, though, I bought some last year, but I almost fainted when they told me what I owed them. Way overpriced, IMO.

I agree with you that it should be just men — and I am a woman. But perhaps the problem is that there are not enough men stepping up.

It took two years to reaffirm that it's not a good idea for homosexuals to take little boys off into the woods? Well, at least they got it right. And unanimously, too. Good for the Boy Scouts.

Find your local Council in the phone book or online, and tell them you want to contribute to Friends of Scouting. Or watch for Cub Scouts, in September and October, selling popcorn in front of a grocery store or at your church.

Great piece, thanks for posting it. BSA has shown integrity and bravery in the face of a politically correct tidal wave of trendiness.

Eric Jones, a 19-year-old Eagle Scout, was fired from being a counselor at a Boy Scout camp in Missouri

Meanwhile, another Council is being sued because a young man with years in Scout was found to be molesting younger boys.

There can be no exceptions. They must keep homosexuals away from the boys, period ... and, unfortunately, train even the youngest Boy Scouts to recognize, report, shout to high heaven about any sexual activity.
