James Holmes is responsible for one of the largest mass shootings of its kind in US history but it did not result in the largest number of deaths.
...
The police said he appeared to have legally purchased all of the weapons, including a second pistol found in Holmes's car.
...
Shotguns and handguns have always been readily available in Colorado, but until eight years ago Holmes would not have been able to buy the AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle he was carrying quite so easily.
The manufacture and import of AR-15s and similar weapons, such as AK-47s, were banned in the US in 1994. There were also limits on the size of magazines that could be fitted, limiting them to holding no more than 10 bullets.
Those prohibitions fell away 10 years later, and attempts to revive them have failed in the face of objections from the powerful National Rifle Association allowing Holmes not only to purchase the powerful weapon but also to fit it with the magazine drum holding a large number of bullets.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gives Colorado a score of just 15 points out of 100 in assessing adequate gun control laws. It criticises the state for not restricting bulk purchases of weapons, for failing to record identification of weapons so they can be traced, for failing to require any permits to buy a weapon and for permitting large magazines of the kind used by Holmes.
Colorado permits people to carry loaded and concealed weapons with a licence. The NRA is fighting a legal case against the requirement for a permit.

This being the Guaridan I am highly suspect of their reporting.
I think the democrats have finally found their issue for Election 2012. We’ll probably see less Bain and income tax attacks now. They will still talk about Bain/Romney’s Taxes but they are now (smiling inside) that “the Joker” handed them their issue and something to stand for.
I say let’s have a movie theatre where anybody with a CHL can walk in with a loaded rifle of their choice and see how many mass murders that place has.
I’d be packing my M1A, no “bullet-proof vest” short of ceramic plates has a chance of stopping that.
I’m willing to bet my house no way 12 people die from being shot by some little pussy in a “bullet-proof” vest. Especially nobody with faggy flame-red hair, that guy might get clipped just walking in.
Almost as if it is just what the young man wanted......
And you could still use existing grandfathered 10rd+ magazines with them. There were some similar regulations regarding pistols and semi-auto shotguns.
If we don’t hear anything more about his political affiliations I’d say taht is a good possibility. If he was a Republican/Tea Party member we would have heard about it from day one.
My state of Texas has unrestricted features on my AR style semi-auto utility rifles.
I check fence on a ATV an my HBAR in 6.5 Grendel rides on the rack with a redi mag an 10x leupold Mk 4 . Gets covered in mud, works in all environments.
Donating cash to my Texas state rifle association an NRA to keep fighting the liberal socialist bedwetters agenda.
BLOAT an vote with yer dollars between elections ...
My opinion
Oh, goodie!!! Please, please, please, please, please let this be the sole issue of the numbskull D-Rats for the 2012 election. It will sink them for decades.
Thanks. That’s what I though.
Yep.
Anti-gunners may have been surprised to learn that a bayonet lug is really not all that essential to having a so-called "assault weapon".
Here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, they have figured out that it is the evil pistol grip that really makes a so-called "assault weapon" powerful.
So, if you can do without the evil plastic pistol grip, and the evil flash-suppressor, and the evil folding-stock, then you can have a semi-automatic, center-fire, magazine-fed rifle. (For some reason, the state of Kalifornia doesn't outlaw the evil bayonet lugs, as far as I know.)
Kalifornia has outlawed the transfer of magazines holding more than 10 cartridges. Those who had them prior to the law and who didn't lose them in an unfortunate boating accident, can use them.
Just prior to the passage of the federal "assault weapons" ban, manufacturers tooled up for the expected dramatic increase in demand for normal capacity magazines. Any hint of a future ban will send manufacturing into orbit to fill orders.
When I was 16, and took driver's ed class, one of the first things our wise instructor said to us was:
"A car is a weapon".
And they will say, yeah, but drivers don't intend to kill.
Yeah, but the dead guy doesn't care whether he died from a bullet or a car wreck.
He's dead, just the same.
I had a first cousin who died in a car wreck, just before he shipped out for Viet Nam. He was the oldest son. My Aunt and Uncle were devastated, just as bad as if he would have died over there.
That reads like a bleeding heart liberal whine! If the murderer had been limited to only a shotgun, he would likely have been firing slugs and buckshot continually and more than twelve would have died. The AR in close tends to go right through. A 12 or even 20 gauge slug destroys a whole lot more when it hits. With the UN agenda heating up before the Colorado shooting, the media working for the globalist agenda were ready to publish lots of hyperbolic crap about personal defense weaponry. molon labe
I often take it for granted what all we have access to that others don't outside of here. I was checking out every configuration of AR imaginable today. Few legal in several other States (probably none in California unless you get a fixed magazine or one of those stupid modifications to the grip.
OK, great, so take away the rights of the criminal, Holmes, just as he took away the rights of his victims.
I did nothing wrong, neither did my brother, or my neighbor, so don’t even dream of taking away our rights, because that would be just as criminal as what Holmes did, just using a different tool, the pen...
You know, I can’t really see much difference between Holmes and gun grabbers.
Both ARE ABSOLUTE COWARDS who dress themselves with as much power as they can in order to assail victims who have far less power.
In the case of Holmes, he armed himself to the teeth with weaponry and defensive gear in order to murder women, children and babies.
In the case of gun grabbers, they seek to disarm those who empowered them in order to to have their way with us without any fear, which is essentially what Holmes did by attacking such a soft target. The only difference is that the grabbers dress in suits, pant suits and wield pens, but they also want their victims to be incapable of any response of consequence.
COWARDS.
Yep. ... Agree.
I like the utility of the little black rifles.
Mine aren’t going anywhere regardless of politics.
Nite !
Why do they obcess so? A few years ago, a Brit killed a large number of kids in a kndergarten? Despite a strict man on the kind of gun he was carrying.
Hey you europeans...Hilarious you lecture us...
Strictest gun control?
Can you say “NORWAY”? Seven times as many dead!

“Why do they obcess so?”
Because it’s their final means of total at will Extortion.

Are they also going to ban tubular magazines, shotguns, bolt and lever action rifles? My old Marlin .22 semiautomatic I had as a teen/young adult could’ve caused almost as much damage as whatever weapons the alleged suspect might have used. Any pawn shop will sell you one for less than $100 and how much does a brick of .22 LR cost?
Good question!
What they want to do is parade the victims of the shooting to Congress and demand tight gun controls. That’s what they’re saying on twitter.
The Texas tower sniper tragedy took more lives:
Charles Joseph Whitman (June 24, 1941 August 1, 1966) was a student at the University of Texas at Austin and a former Marine who killed 16 people and wounded 32 others (a total of 49 victims including himself) during a shooting rampage on and around the university's campus on August 1, 1966.

What percentage of the legally owned guns in our nation are killing innocent people?
Anybody know?
Both ARE ABSOLUTE COWARDS who dress themselves with as much power as they can in order to assail victims who have far less power.
Good Point!
William Bonin, John Wayne Gacy and Jeff Dahmer (google around for many, many more) killed lots of people. Let’s outlaw homosexuality.
Whitman was kept pinned down by the erratic return fire of citizens with deer rifles. If it hadn’t been for the citizens, Whitman’s number would have been much higher. I watched the incident on live TV from the Austin feed.
Just wondering about the UN vote for our guns...has it already happened? There are conspiracy theories out there because of the surrender not being psychologically consistent...

Just the messenger.
Fuel for thier agenda. If there ever was a coinsidence we may never know. The fact that we are not drilled every second on him being a teapartier or right leaning bible thumping gun loving rightwing nut we can all assume he is a liberal progressive left leaning drug user.
You are correct and in the People’s Republic of new Jersey that is how the AR STILL has to be fitted in order to purchase it.Otherwise it looks EVIL! Also can’t have bayonet lug and flash supressor.
Isn't it amazing how the timing of this and similar gun abuse tragedies often seem to take place at convenient times and work to the benefit of democrats?
Could this be another "False Flag" operation rather than just a lone crazed gunman episode?
You can bet that the major media won't do any serious investigation.
They are already fully vested in using the tragedy as a springboard to push their anti-gun, anti-conservative agendas.
The perfect arsenal to attack, to effect more gun control. One from column A,one from column B and upon entering the Presidency,i remember Obama, wanting to re-classify pump action shotguns as assault rifles. What a coincidence. All the major weapons groups they want banned are involved,While the Glaring lack of a revolver, would allow a politician,to feign Second Ammendment support,by saying you can keep your revolvers ( Knowing Americans need to have a Handgun ) and your over and under and side by side shotguns. If Obama signs an Executive Order, banning just the classifications of Firearms involved in this massacre, while exempting revolvers and over and under and side by side shot guns, you’ll know Obama’s thugs were involved as a pre-text to get Firearms banned.

Guns don't kill people.
I live in the people’s republic of Mass. The ‘94 AWB is still in force here. 10 round magazines. Unless you are willing to pay for pre-ban 30 round mags if your style of rifle is pre-ban. I live near the smith and Wesson factory, and there are models built there that are available in CT, but they have to go through a year long approval process to become available here.
It really sucks.
“...but until eight years ago Holmes would not have been able to buy the AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle...”
Welllllll...not quite.
AR-15’s already in the US were still available. The only thing AWB actually did was push up the retail prices of a specific class of firearms, and push some cosmetic changes.
The confusion is understandable, sadly, because the UK is already effectively disarmed and has been for some time.
.. there's something else at work and its origin stems from radical leftist stinking, especially the 1960s Marxist-Alinsky campus radicals and their ideological issue.. all psycho spoiled brats actually.
I’m not a gun enthusiast, never fired a firearm and do not support gun control. That being said, why would the average citizen need more fire power than a hand gun, for personal protection or a rifle for hunting? Please enlighten.
Brit newspapers looking for “insight.”
Need is not the issue. Remember, the phrase "too many guns" should never be uttered. It is a falsehood, an outright travesty.
“Remember, the phrase “too many guns” should never be uttered”
Didn’t mean to imply one of each, I was referring to the type of firearm.
I have one of those NJ models. I have fixed stock instead of folding, big deal. I have no flash suppresor, it is louder. No bayonet lug, so what. Ten round magazine, just bring more magazines(allowed 15 round ones, but nobody makes them). Also cannot say Colt AR-15 on the gun, any other combination of letters is OK. Same with AK-47, WASR-10 is OK.
I’m just grateful the libs no nothing about guns. If they did, I would be really screwed here in NJ.
Society cannot stop crazy people from causing murder & mayhem.
This loon could have just as easily used a can of gasoline & matches to do just as much carnage, maybe more. Too, he could have driven a car into a crowd of people with similar results. There are infinite ways to commit mass murder without a gun.
It is not possible to remove all potential weapons from society without creating prison like conditions in public, & even in prison, murders occur all the time.
But, if every adult in the theater had been armed with a gun, the joke may have been on the Joker. It is likely far fewer people would have been killed & injured.
It is high time this country returns to the common sense that every law abiding adult has a responsibility to defend themselves & those around them. Police will never be able to stop this type of attack, but ONE person with a gun could have.
Your answer is in your statement. Your average hunting rifle is way more firepower than the so called assault rifle. If you can, take a 5.56 round(AR-15) place it next to a popular deer hunting round, say 30-06, and compare the size.
Ask yourself, Hobson’s choice, which one you would rather get hit with. Since hunting rifles are more powerful, what would would be the point in banning rifles less powerful. No matter how they look, they all work the same. Firing pin hits primer on cartridge, gun goes bang. Today’s military rifles are designed to be less powerful than yesterday’s bolt action rifles(equivalent to hunting rifles, their the same). Less hurt on shoulder, more ammo with smaller rounds, etc.
AR-15s are not high-powered rifles, but they are magazine fed, which can give them high-capacity. Most hunting rifles are chambered for cartridges that are much more powerful than the .223 Rem (5.56mm NATO).
The error committed by gun control advocates is they don’t understand where the focus should be.
It doesn’t matter if law abiding citizens have AR 15s with 30 round capacity or 30-06 with a five round capacity. They’re not going to use it for murdering people
The focus should be on behavior. Murderous behavior is the problem.
