An AR-15 rifle and Glock handguns: the legal weapons of James Holmes(al-Guardian)
The Guardian ^

Posted on 07/21/2012 11:40:47 PM PDT by matt04

James Holmes is responsible for one of the largest mass shootings of its kind in US history – but it did not result in the largest number of deaths.

...

The police said he appeared to have legally purchased all of the weapons, including a second pistol found in Holmes's car.

...

Shotguns and handguns have always been readily available in Colorado, but until eight years ago Holmes would not have been able to buy the AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle he was carrying quite so easily.

The manufacture and import of AR-15s and similar weapons, such as AK-47s, were banned in the US in 1994. There were also limits on the size of magazines that could be fitted, limiting them to holding no more than 10 bullets.

Those prohibitions fell away 10 years later, and attempts to revive them have failed in the face of objections from the powerful National Rifle Association allowing Holmes not only to purchase the powerful weapon but also to fit it with the magazine drum holding a large number of bullets.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gives Colorado a score of just 15 points out of 100 in assessing adequate gun control laws. It criticises the state for not restricting bulk purchases of weapons, for failing to record identification of weapons so they can be traced, for failing to require any permits to buy a weapon and for permitting large magazines of the kind used by Holmes.

Colorado permits people to carry loaded and concealed weapons with a licence. The NRA is fighting a legal case against the requirement for a permit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the AWB signed allow the AR-15 and other weapons to still be manufactured and sold, just without certain features, such as a collapsible stock while retaining the actual functionality of the gun?

This being the Guaridan I am highly suspect of their reporting.

I think the democrats have finally found their issue for Election 2012. We’ll probably see less Bain and income tax attacks now. They will still talk about Bain/Romney’s Taxes but they are now (smiling inside) that “the Joker” handed them their issue and something to stand for.

I say let’s have a movie theatre where anybody with a CHL can walk in with a loaded rifle of their choice and see how many mass murders that place has.

I’d be packing my M1A, no “bullet-proof vest” short of ceramic plates has a chance of stopping that.

I’m willing to bet my house no way 12 people die from being shot by some little pussy in a “bullet-proof” vest. Especially nobody with faggy flame-red hair, that guy might get clipped just walking in.

Ye, it generally banned US production of semi-auto detachable mag rifles with more than one "evil feature:" ie. flash hider (but not muzzle brake or compensator), threaded barrel, bayonet lug(?!), collapsable/folding buttstock, and pistol grip. For an AR15, most people kept the pistol grip.

And you could still use existing grandfathered 10rd+ magazines with them. There were some similar regulations regarding pistols and semi-auto shotguns.

If we don’t hear anything more about his political affiliations I’d say taht is a good possibility. If he was a Republican/Tea Party member we would have heard about it from day one.

My state of Texas has unrestricted features on my AR style semi-auto utility rifles.

I check fence on a ATV an my HBAR in 6.5 Grendel rides on the rack with a redi mag an 10x leupold Mk 4 . Gets covered in mud, works in all environments.

Donating cash to my Texas state rifle association an NRA to keep fighting the liberal socialist bedwetters agenda.

BLOAT an vote with yer dollars between elections ...

Oh, goodie!!! Please, please, please, please, please let this be the sole issue of the numbskull D-Rats for the 2012 election. It will sink them for decades.

Yep.

Anti-gunners may have been surprised to learn that a bayonet lug is really not all that essential to having a so-called "assault weapon".

Here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, they have figured out that it is the evil pistol grip that really makes a so-called "assault weapon" powerful.

So, if you can do without the evil plastic pistol grip, and the evil flash-suppressor, and the evil folding-stock, then you can have a semi-automatic, center-fire, magazine-fed rifle. (For some reason, the state of Kalifornia doesn't outlaw the evil bayonet lugs, as far as I know.)

Kalifornia has outlawed the transfer of magazines holding more than 10 cartridges. Those who had them prior to the law and who didn't lose them in an unfortunate boating accident, can use them.

Just prior to the passage of the federal "assault weapons" ban, manufacturers tooled up for the expected dramatic increase in demand for normal capacity magazines. Any hint of a future ban will send manufacturing into orbit to fill orders.

They don't call for the banning of cars, even though 30,000 per year die at the hands of cars. That would interfere with their conveniences.

When I was 16, and took driver's ed class, one of the first things our wise instructor said to us was:

"A car is a weapon".

And they will say, yeah, but drivers don't intend to kill.

Yeah, but the dead guy doesn't care whether he died from a bullet or a car wreck.

He's dead, just the same.

I had a first cousin who died in a car wreck, just before he shipped out for Viet Nam. He was the oldest son. My Aunt and Uncle were devastated, just as bad as if he would have died over there.

That reads like a bleeding heart liberal whine! If the murderer had been limited to only a shotgun, he would likely have been firing slugs and buckshot continually and more than twelve would have died. The AR in close tends to go right through. A 12 or even 20 gauge slug destroys a whole lot more when it hits. With the UN agenda heating up before the Colorado shooting, the media working for the globalist agenda were ready to publish lots of hyperbolic crap about personal defense weaponry. molon labe

I often take it for granted what all we have access to that others don't outside of here. I was checking out every configuration of AR imaginable today. Few legal in several other States (probably none in California unless you get a fixed magazine or one of those stupid modifications to the grip.

OK, great, so take away the rights of the criminal, Holmes, just as he took away the rights of his victims.

I did nothing wrong, neither did my brother, or my neighbor, so don’t even dream of taking away our rights, because that would be just as criminal as what Holmes did, just using a different tool, the pen...

You know, I can’t really see much difference between Holmes and gun grabbers.

Both ARE ABSOLUTE COWARDS who dress themselves with as much power as they can in order to assail victims who have far less power.

In the case of Holmes, he armed himself to the teeth with weaponry and defensive gear in order to murder women, children and babies.

In the case of gun grabbers, they seek to disarm those who empowered them in order to to have their way with us without any fear, which is essentially what Holmes did by attacking such a soft target. The only difference is that the grabbers dress in suits, pant suits and wield pens, but they also want their victims to be incapable of any response of consequence.

COWARDS.

Yep. ... Agree.

I like the utility of the little black rifles.

Mine aren’t going anywhere regardless of politics.

Why do they obcess so? A few years ago, a Brit killed a large number of kids in a kndergarten? Despite a strict man on the kind of gun he was carrying.

I'm gonna turn in my G19 & AR15 because I'll be so much safer with my mobile phone & the ability to call 9-1-1. Hopefully I wouldn't have to wait too long; maybe the bad guy would have a change of heart seeing how I was prepared to call the police.

Yeah, my mobile phone is the great equalizer. When an armed assailant (or anyone stronger than me) attacks, I'm gonna feel so good about packin' my mobile phone!

My mobile phone has a Safety Off feature - when the battery runs out of juice, the safety of dialing 9-1-1 would off... of my list of options.

A mobile phone society is a polite society.

When seconds count... I better have 9-1-1 on SPEED DIAL!

“Why do they obcess so?”

Because it’s their final means of total at will Extortion.

(To steal others assets through the use of threats and /or duress. The plan of the Mandate)
