With the first heart-breaking headlines out of Colorado, gun-rights advocates just had to know that leftist lecturers in our media would mount their soap boxes and trash this country for its gun culture and trash the National Rifle Association as an "enabler of death -- paranoid, delusional, and as venomous as a scorpion."
But it's additionally sad that the soap box in this case is paid for by taxpayers -- in the form of taxpayer support for every PBS station that spews out this leftist loathing. On his show Moyers & Company, 78-year-old PBS omnipresence Bill Moyers reached back to America's inhumane and vicious Westward expansion, when so many blood-thirsty Americans were killed because of their ineptitude with firearms:
MOYERS: We are after all a country which began with the forced subjugation into slavery of millions of Africans and the reliance on arms against Native Americans for its Westward expansion. In truth, more settlers traveling the Oregon Trail died from accidental, self-inflicted gunshots wounds than Indian attacks - we were not only bloodthirsty but also inept.
Nonetheless, we have become so gun loving, so blasé about home-grown violence that in my lifetime alone, far more Americans have been casualties of domestic gunfire than have died in all our wars combined. In Arizona last year, just days after the Gabby Giffords shooting, sales of the weapon used in the slaughter - a 9 millimeter Glock semi-automatic pistol - doubled.
We are fooling ourselves. That the law could allow even an inflamed lunatic to easily acquire murderous weapons and not expect murderous consequences. Fooling ourselves that the Second Amendment’s guarantee of a "well-regulated militia" be construed as a God-given right to purchase and own just about any weapon of destruction you like. That's a license for murder and mayhem and it's a great fraud that has entered our history.
There's a video of which I'd like to remind you. You can see it on YouTube. In it, Adam Gadahn, an American born member of al Qaeda, the first U.S. citizen charged with treason since 1952, urges terrorists to carry out attacks on the United States. Right before your eyes he says: "America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms. You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely, without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?"
The killer in Colorado waited only for an opportunity, and there you have it - the arsenal of democracy transformed into the arsenal of death and the NRA -- the NRA is the enabler of death -- paranoid, delusional, and as venomous as a scorpion. With the weak-kneed acquiescence of our politicians, the National Rifle Association has turned the Second Amendment of the Constitution into a cruel hoax, a cruel and deadly hoax.
Anyone who thinks PBS is not a left-wing propaganda system supported involuntarily (in part) by conservative Americans has never flipped the remote control past the "public" broadcasting channels. The funders of PBS are enablers of vicious anti-conservative rhetoric, even at times of great national sorrow.
Bet that Oregon Trail statistic is pure fabrication.

And how many people have died from gun-related, domestic violence as compared to how many soldiers were killed in war? Over one million Americans soldiers have died in wars...not all from guns. I doubt Moyers's "facts" like I doubt all "facts" coming from leftists. I call Moyers a huge liar.
Some 10% died from unsanitary water. They had no idea back then that using the same water over and over again at way stations or using stagnant water caused cholera. The cure of merely boiling water was not known then. Next came accidental deaths from drownings at river crossings, wagon accidents and other injuries where infection set in. The number of accidental deaths from firearm’s would be darn small as many of these folks had fought in the War of 1812 and/or then the Civil war,and other’s had hunted since boys. Heck, this PBS station is a joke. Add Juan Williams to it’s lying crew.
I think one last gun law ought to do it. If you’re a liberal then you disqualify for a gun license.

The only difference between people trapped in a theatre facing a killer with a gun and an unwanted unborn trapped in a hostile womb facing a doctor with a knife is...........the people in the theatre have a chance to escape. We are living with their values and standards, when there is murder they blame a gun, not their lack of value for human life.

Allow me to add a couple: More people die under the care of doctors than are killed by firearms. Ban doctors.

I wonder if an assumption is being made that the toll of deadly accidents was largely due to weapons and then the calculated conclusion is being trumpeted, circularly, as truth. I agree this would be unlikely on that rugged and ready trail. Especially as you point out this is before modern sanitation and the advent of the antibiotic, which has rendered many former formidable menaces trivial.
It’s certainly possible for a once fervently believing Christian to fall into a degenerate form of the gospel, as if fallen earth could be engineered into heaven. A theology not too far removed from that is behind the final verse of the popular patriotic hymn “America The Beautiful.” Nope, there won’t be an America as such — though there will be many souls who had lived in America as well as all around the globe — in a place “undimmed by human tears.”
