Syria Says Will Use Chemical Weapons If Attacked

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — The Syrian regime threatened Monday to use its chemical and biological weapons in case of a foreign attack, in its first ever acknowledgement that it possesses weapons of mass destruction.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi vowed, however, that Damascus would not use its unconventional arms against its own citizens. The announcement comes as Syria faces international isolation, a tenacious rebellion that has left at least 19,000 people dead and threats by Israel to invade to prevent such weapons from falling into rebel hands.

"No chemical or biological weapons will ever be used, and I repeat, will never be used, during the crisis in Syria no matter what the developments inside Syria," Makdissi said in news conference broadcast on Syrian state TV. "All of these types of weapons are in storage and under security and the direct supervision of the Syrian armed forces and will never be used unless Syria is exposed to external aggression."

While the statement Makdissi read out promised not to use the weapons against the Syrian people, he later noted that Syria is not facing an internal enemy in the rebellion, which the regime has described as being funded from abroad and driven by foreign extremists.

Well, there's his qualifier. The internal problem is due to external aggressors. Stay tuned.

My understanding is that the rebels are being supplied by Saudi Arabia and by Qatar.

But when Syria says it will use WMD against foreign aggressors, they are probably htinking of Israel.

That'll be great when the Muslim Brotherhood takes over Syria!

I see the potential manifestation of Isaiah 17, referring to the destruction of Damascus. Israel takes preemptive action to prevent Syrian WMDs from ending up in the hands of Hezbollah, al Qaeda or any of those terrorist groups, Syria retaliates with chemical weapons against Israel, Israel nukes Damascus.

WMDs were moved from Iraq to Syria. Some of us here remember seeing a piece on the History Channel which showed night vision cameras recording the movement of trucks. Never could locate a link to that footage.

So there were WMDs in Iraq? They were just moved right before the invasion.

...when the smartest people in the room are constantly proven to be wrong, why are they still considered the smartest people in the room?

They left Iraq in a Russian convoy right before the war started. If you do a search you might even find some of the many freerepublic threads that were following that convoy as it was leaving Iraq.

It depends on who you ask. All of Saddam's pre-1991 munitions were considered "degraded" by MSM types. However, our chemical stockpiles at Redstone Arsenal and other locations are still monitored and considered extremely dangerous. They're a century old.

If Syria possesses binary chemical munitions, the ingredients are kept separate until the weapon is deployed. Under proper storage conditions, the shelf life would be significant, if not indefinite.

Assad has to know that he is dog meat.

Pictures of his bloody and broken body being used as a ventriloquist doll are going to be plastered all over the internet in a little while.

If he doesn't quit, buy himself a little house on the beach somewhere, keep his mouth shut and live happily everafter, he is stupider than he looks.

Only the most hard core al Qaeda will be willing to endanger the Hajj as they, in fact, did. As a result, the Saudi have the ability to export their fundamentalism and at the same time, profit through their relationship with the West.

What he appears to be saying is that he's not going to use his chem/bio weapons inside Syria, he will use them against the foreign states who are providing support for the rebels.
