Comptroller Susan Combs on Thursday added her name to the long list of Texas elected officials who are backing Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in his bid for the U.S. Senate.
Dewhurst has been “relentless and focused on conservative principles,” said Combs, who credited the lieutenant governor for putting Texas in a strong economic position.
“Fighting for principle is not always easy and it is not always visible,” Combs said at an Austin news conference. “I will tell you that actions speak a lot louder than words.”
The low-key news conference at Run-Tex on Riverside Drive stands in stark contrast to the big-crowd events that Dewhurst’s runoff opponent, Ted Cruz, will attend today and tomorrow. Tonight, thousands of activists will pile into the American Airlines Center in Dallas to hear Cruz along with radio commentator Glenn Beck, U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint and other tea party leaders. On Friday, Sarah Palin will headline a Cruz rally in The Woodlands in advance of Tuesday’s vote.

Earlier on Thursday, state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston posted on his Facebook page that he would vote for Dewhurst. A conservative radio host, Patrick had declined to endorse in the race but did speak up several times to defend Dewhurst’s conservative record in the Texas Senate.........
Patrick added: “Cruz is a bright and talented lawyer who is also a fiery orator. I respect those who see it differently. I’m not going to be critical of Cruz. He may well win and if he does we will rally around him in November. Since both Cruz and Dewhurst have said they differ only slightly on the issues in the end it’s a matter of style and background.”

Voted for Cruz. Time for Dewhurst to leave politics. But I bet his ego will require a run to succeed Rick Perry. Will be interesting to see if the RINOs try to undermine Cruz in the general election.

My sense (as a non-Texan, mind) is that Dewhurst probably came into office long ago with generally conservative views and still has many ... but that, over decades in public service and “logrolling,” he has become beholden to too many people and views to really support MAJOR changes in the very system that made him powerful.
Ted Cruz is younger, fresher and doesn’t owe any favors (except to all the RIGHT kinds of people, like Jim DeMint).
Cruz over Dewhurst is a huge opportunity for Texas conservatives.
I think Patrick just wants Dewhurst out of Austin, to make life easier on the state level to get things accomplished for conservatives, but he has not been honest about his subtle endorsements of Dewhurst.
I voted for Cruz today.
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't your hero Rick Perry also endorse Dewhurst?

Overall, 32,676 people have now voted early in person, 27,311 of them Republicans and 5,365 of them Democrats.
Mail ballots also are coming in at a good clip: 22,849 were returned as of the close of business Wednesday (15,956 by Republicans and 6,893 by Democrats), with another roughly 17,00 mail ballots still outstanding.

My primary candidate, Rick Perry, did endorse Dewhurst but I voted for Cruz.
How I wish Perry could have simply stayed out of it, at least.
I am not surprised about local Texas politicians endorsing Dewhursrt, I expect many of them have their nose on each other’s butts for some reason or another and there will be loyalty paybacks later in compensation. Dewhurst is still Lt. Governor, more powerful position than even the Governor, and he is wealthy. What is really disturbing is the outside endorsements of Dewhurst, especially the ones of late that came in after Dewhurst has exposed himself as such a slimeball by his dirty campaign. Very disappointing to see Huckabee, Michael Reagan, and now James Inhoffe endorse Dewhurst.
But that's the way isn't it "kick them upstairs" where they end up causing more headaches?
We need someone who can stand tall in the U.S. Senate, holding their own in a small body and sway it to conservative thinking.

Oh, no! Susan Combs (!!) has endorsed Dewhurst! I guess that will erase any influence of the Palin endorsement for Cruz!
I believe this is why no politician who wants any kind of career in Texas can dare endorse Ted Cruz. However, I've also heard that Dewhurst has made his share of enemies so I'm optimistic about Cruz's chances. I still can't believe how dirty the Dewhurst campaign has become and I have to think there will be a backlash.
Perry endorsed Dewhurst to the disappoint of many, including me. Dan Patrick and others have wanted it both ways but have had to come forward and state their choice. I do not intend to re-fight my support of Gov. Perry in the primary with you.
Someone correct me, but wasn’t Dewhurst a big supporter of in-state tuition for illegals who aren’t supposed to be here in the first place? He’s got to be beat.!!

But thanks for saying he has disappointed you. Admitting you have a problem is the first step in correcting it, assuming you want to, that is. My guess is you support Perry still and will in the future. So be it. He's still a liberal and proves it each day.
