Romney 'Looking Forward to the Bust of Winston Churchill Being in the Oval Office Again'

At an event in London, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, "I'm looking forward to the bust of Winston Churchill being in the Oval Office again."

President Obama famously sent Churchill's bust back to Britain soon after coming into office. As the Telegraph reported then:

A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government's art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.

The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush's tenure.

But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: "Thanks, but no thanks."

The National Health Service in England was created by the National Health Service Act of 1946. Churchill was voted out of office in 1945, just weeks after VE Day.

He did not regain the Prime Minister's Office again until 1951.

Churchill did push through some temporary measures to deal with health care during the war, but it was Attlee's Administration which made them permanent and turned them into socialized medicine with the NHS.

However, it was the Beveridge Report, commissioned in 1941 by the Labour Minister Without Portfolio Arthur Greenwood, which set the stage for the NHS in 1946. Churchill did not act on the report during the war.

It should be remembered that Churchill did not head a Conservative government during World War II. He headed a national coalition government which was succeeded by Clement Attlee in 1945.

Though few seem to remember it, Churchill was the father of socialized medicine in Great Britain.

The National Health Service was fully implemented in the UK in 1948. The Conservatives had been out of power for three years then.

It was actually Health Minister Aneurin Bevan who was it's architect.

No doubt about it, in most respects Romney is much more like Chamberlain than he is like Churchill.

That's about right. Still, even Chamberlain is a huge step up from what we have today. Obama is by a huge margin the biggest threat to American freedom in our country's history.

Not only did Obama give the Queen an iPod but it was an iPod loaded with Obama speeches which is about as narcissistic as you can get. He also gave Gordon Brown (Prime Minister at the time) a DVD collection of classic American movies that could not be played on British DVD players (different DVD format).

The guy is an absolute clown and way out of his depth. Had Bush made the above faux paux, the media would never let him live it down.

Returning the Churchill bust is yet another un-classy move. Churchill is one of the few people in history who can be claimed to have singlehandedly changed the course of world history.

Here's an excerpt from one of his best speeches (when he assumed the office of prime minister in May of 1940 after France had fallen):

...We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival...

Obama dislikes America's allies and likes America's enemies. It is really that simple. That is why Chavez supports him, the Israelis can't stand him, and why he wants to give Putin “more flexibility”. And that is a VERY partial list of examples.

If YOU support Mr. ROMNEYCARE, then you were behind
Obama becoming pRes_ _ent, and helped protect Obama
and his sick policies (like the endlessly meek, silent, Mr. RomneyCARE).

How about YOU taking some responsibility, RomneyBOT?

FLASHBACK:

The McCain/Palin ticket was up ++4 to 10 pts
in some polls, days prior to Election 2008.
So rather than helping the GOP, Romney and
TeamROMNEY and the RNME (Republican National Media Establishment)
decided …to attack Gov. Palin to throw Election2008.

Romney, and the Van der Sloot RNME RINOs for Obama in 2008

Late in October, The American Spectator's The Prowler revealed:
"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers…
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide…
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
"Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."

The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"I’m told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palin’s people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romney’s former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
… aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.

"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off ….hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."

"Who's the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign?
National Review Online The publication of a Vanity Fair profile of Sarah Palin
appears to have opened old wounds in the McCain campaign.
... the source of the “Diva” leak was Nicolle Wallace’s husband."

"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

Churchill may have been a great man, but he was also a politician. The pressure for an NHS came largely from the Labour Party with power was shared in the national government during WWII.
You don’t get into high office without having a certain sense of pragmatism. Apart from having to make concessions to his Labour colleagues, he knew very well that the public mood at that time supported universal healthcare, and resisting it would have been political suicide in a post war world.
As it happened, even that wasn’t enough for Churchill, and he was voted out in 1945 by a public who didn’t generally share his Conservative convictions.

They were also ready to shuck the British Empire, which Churchill steadfastly refused to do.

Hey?

Dislike Mitt, but please don’t besmirch Churchill, socialized healthcare came in after he was out of power and was inspired by the Labour Party.
