Proposal: Force Citizens to Own Guns
The New American ^ | 01 August 2012 | Selwyn Duke

When people such as Little Big Gulp Bloomberg propose some new nanny-state law, they often express the hope that “it will become a model for the nation.” But forget about aping sprawling metropolises such as the Big Apple or San Francisco if you want to increase public well-being. There is a better locality to copy: Kennesaw, Georgia.

I propose that we take one of its laws nationwide and require every law-abiding citizen to own a gun. After all, studies have shown that the deterrent criminals fear most is that of an armed prospective victim. And as the apocryphal saying goes, “The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference.”

Yet I’ll go even further and propose that we also eliminate many of the gun-control laws in existence. And since they number in the thousands, it shouldn’t be hard to pare them down by at least 50 percent. Isn’t this the least we could do in the name of increasing freedom and people’s capacity to defend themselves?

Of course, I wouldn’t expect the above to garner much support from the Left; in fact, I’m sure they’d howl. So I’ll tell you what, my liberal friends.

It works, on two levels. Swiss men are all expected to have a rifle, with the younger men issued automatic weapons from the military.

1. Violent crime is extremely low in Switzerland. Who wants to come up against a military weapon?

2. Switzerland hasn't been invaded for centuries, even though it sits in the middle of Europe. Not even Hitler wanted to mess with a nation of well-armed citizens.

Well, since we can now force people to buy health insurance, we can force people to buy guns and ammo.

Point of the verbose article: conservatives need to use the Left’s game against them, making outlandish demands so that we may get them to settle for what we want. Demand compelling everyone to own a gun, then settle for not expanding current gun laws.

The one problem with this: we want _liberty_. The Left’s technique is to demand lots of control so we’ll settle for some oppression. You don’t achieve liberty by negotiating subjugation.

Reacting to the lead proposal (and not the actual point of the article):
Restore the Militia Act of 1792.

Kennesaw, Georgia passed a law requiring gun ownership in 1982.

The overall crime rate dropped 50% and Kennesaw has the lowest crime rate in the county (Cobb—a heavily populated county right next to the city of Atlanta).

Switzerland is too mountainous to invade. That’s why even the Germans left it alone—too much cost in men and machinery for too little gain.

How this bodes for liberty should be obvious. Since a law, regulation, or mandate is by definition the removal of a freedom, and since we continually agree to the creation of more such measures but hardly ever rescind any, every year we are less and less free. It’s called compromising our way to tyranny.

One glaring exception has been the change to concealed carry laws across the country in the past decade.

Even before Heller, 38 states were converted from may issue to shall issue states.

I think that was a big blow against tyranny.

I think it is a great idea. Plus, we can truthfully use their arguments against them. “We have tried gun control and it did not work.” Trying it again makes no sense when statistics show that it does not accomplish the objective. Since insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting different results, lets try something sane. I.e. less gun control than we have now and a gun in every home.

The criminals will be stymied until they figure out that anyone supporting gay marriage, enviro nonsense and all the other Lib insanities are who they can safely target. A real TWOFER if you ask me : )

I think it was Daniel Webster who said, “An armed society is a polite society.”

Actually, the point of the article is found in the last four paragraphs. It’s not really what you say it is.

Kennesaw, Georgia enacted a law in the 70s IIRC that required the head of household to own a gun....the model for many others to follow.....

Using the left’s techniques against them, we need our representatives to demand the repeal of all gun laws immediately. Then request compromise.

The government should not force us to own anything. I am stunned that any conservative would support this ... gun or not.

I think school should have firearms safety as part of the curriculum. A few of my classmates were killed by fellow students who were ignorant of basic firearms safety. Take a week each year and divert the "PE" classes to the indoor range for some practical "hands on". It is every bit as relevant as driver's safety training.

I don't see a need to require everyone to own a gun. Do with your earnings as you see fit. If a firearm makes you happy, buy it.

I see there’s someone else who didn’t read the article.

Hint: he doesn’t support it. It needs to actually be read to be understood.

I wouldn’t post a piece that was in favor of statism.

Example of the absurdity is good for the argument though.

Libs have been using that tactic on us for decades now. WE are all racist, sexist, homophobic, and thus have to spend all our time and energy trying to prove we aren’t instead of teaching and preaching conservatism. It changes the discussion from conservatism to “no we aren’t those guys”.

That is how Obama got elected; The political swing middle wanted to prove to the world we weren’t racist.

We have to start with the assumption we are not racist (sexist, homophobic, whatever), and prove they (libs) are idiots which is otherwise easy to do. Just look at their results.
