“I’m just a citizen trying to help an officer out. That’s what I was tryin’ to do.” That’s what Vic Stacy had to say while deflecting attempts to call him a hero. Stacy came to the aid of Sgt. Steven Means of the Early, TX PD who came under fire from Charles Conner. According to ktxs.com, Conner had already murdered two neighbors and their dogs before opening fire on the officer as he arrived on the scene. When Stacy saw Sgt. Means couldn’t get a good shot at Conner, he feared the cop would be the third (well, fifth) victim of the afternoon. So Stacy opened up with his own gun, hitting him in the thigh and knocking him down. Conner’s now in a morgue somewhere after Means and Stacy ventilated him sufficiently to end the threat. We know at least one cop who’s glad firearms aren’t restricted to police and the military. [h/t Eric Nelson]
In the video, he says that he was about 165 yards from the perpetrator, so I suspect that Vic Stacy (the citizen aiding the under fire policeman) was using a rifle.
The civilian engaged the bad guy at a range of over 65 yards. With a pistol. And connected with five out of six.
Good shooting.
It’s more like 65. He was using a pistol at a distance, as confirmed from multiple sources, and the interview (to me) it sounds like he was guesstimating one hundred then decided that 65 was more like it.
No independent confirmation on distance yet, but reports indicate he was firing from the other side of a sort of ‘courtyard’ or central square in the RV Park, so some distance.
He deserves free range time for life at police range.

A man size target at one hundred yards should not be an issue to hit.

True, what you say, but at 100 yards, I would not be able to tell exactly who I was shooting at or see much more than a blur. Good shooting is what it was. Incredible shooting, if I was the one coming to the cop’s rescue. ;-)

I regularly hit a sillouette at 50 yards with my Glock 21, .45 acp. In fact, it’s rare for me to miss at that distance. I might not be making head shots but a fully exposed torso? No problem.
That's doable. I can nail a five gallon bucket at 100 yards with a S &W .357 686+, 6 " barrel, of course the bucket ain't shooting back.

Yeah, doing it in combat and ‘for real’ when the target is shooting back with a rifle is another story entirely. And this guy managed to do it.
No, Mr Stacy was using a. 357 revolver.
He also hit the perp at least three times.
If his claim is verified he should be teaching defensive shooting classes. My hat is off to him regardless.

Fine by me, Browning HP, I use a 12” target at one hundred yards.
Really not that difficult if one AIMS using the sights.
No rule against steadying your aim with whatever object may be available.
Cover can also provide a rest.
One reason my gun is not a show-piece, resting it on tree branches, logs, rocks, fence post, as might happen in the real world.
This guy in Texas had it easier, only sixty-five yards.
Having actually been shot at I know my reaction, cold calm.
So far no one has put me to the point of actually having to shoot them, a couple have come close.
Moved out of the Kalifornia thugocracy to decrease the chance I would have to shoot a thug, not moving again.

skytyr, cops ARE civilians. But, I agree the private citizen did exactly the right thing.
65 yards with a pistol? Wow. That is some outstanding shooting.
