Michael Tomasky on the (Possible) Coming Obama Landslide
The Daily Beast ^ | Aug 4, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Liberals don't want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney's path to victory is getting harder every day.

There's a secret lurking behind everything you're reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you've never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn't really up for grabs. Romney's paths to 270 are few.

I am sure that some here will be very happy if Romney gets defeated.... and by the time they realize that this REALLY means that Obama is reelected, it will be too late.

Romney sucks. Too bad the RNC can’t find it in themselves to support an actual Conservative.

Yes he does but compared to Obama, he is a Saint! Can’t believe that the country will elect this simpleton again!

If that happens, we are doomed as a Country! Surely most people on this planet Earth are not so ignorant as to re-elect this poser.

If they do, I will have lost all hope!

Reminds me of a famous columnist in NYCity who couldn’t understand why Nixon had won, when everyone she knew had voted for McGovern.

Numerous people stated before the primaries that they would not support Romney. Warning signs were abundant... and ignored. He has left such a trail of contradictory statements behind that the Obama PACs will have a field day withering his support with his own words.

I predict that if Romney is elected, he will immediately embrace every “moderate” position and will basically act like a Democrat. The result will be a Democrat Prez in 2016 and the complete marginalization of Conservative and Tea Party voters.

Obama is no simpleton — he and the people behind him have an agenda: the destruction of the US as we know it.

“Surely most people on this planet Earth are not so ignorant as to re-elect this poser.”

We don’t need to go very far, just look at a number of people right here on this website, who will contribute to Obama’s reelection. Every conservative vote not cast or cast for anyone other than Romney IS a vote for Obama.

Then what do you expect of the rest of the people?

Yeah, nobody but you is smart enough to figure any of this stuff out huh. /s

What I’d like to ask jokers like you is this. After Dole, Bush, Bush, McCain, and now Romney, just how many decades did you expect Conservatives to wait for a reasoned Conservative candidate before telling the party to F O? Three, four, sixteen? Give me a number.

At this point the earliest chance we have to install a Conservative is January 2017, and we all know that isn’t going to happen unless Romney does lose now.

I happen to expect him to win. That means the next real chance we have is January 2021, and that’s only if Romney doesn’t pull a George Bush on us before then. In that case we’re looking at January 2025 or even 2029 at the earliest. Ain’t that just swell! 36 to 40 fricken years after Reagan.

That’s three and a half to four decades with Leftist Republicans and far Left Democrats holding power.

And here you are dancing to the tune of, “Love me, Love me, One more time...” as sung by the GOPe.

Tell us, do you want this nation back or what? If not, just be up front about it and quit this pretend stuff.

Well, you sure are presenting a pessimistic view - really, so many people here supporting Obama? Can’t believe that!

I do worry about those that think that because we have to vote for either Obama or Romney that they will stay home. That does scare me! I find it so hard to believe that Conservatives would actually NOT vote rather than vote for Romney and allow the continued destruction of America! What a grand idea.

I would say the international situation is too unstable for anyone to be making very confident predictions of how this election might go. If war breaks out in the Middle East, as appears quite possible, then it will drive the economy off the stage or at least become a second major issue (for many voters, of course for conservatives there are already other major issues).

YES, he might just do that and how does that compare to the destruction that Obama will do? Surely you can see the outcome of either not voting or not caring about this election.

I see this as a chance to continue surviving and a chance to correct things in the future or giving up and allowing the reelection of Obama - thus the further destruction of America!

Terrible as it sounds, just read some of the posts around here, there seem to be quite a few advocating to vote third party or not vote for president — which might be just the exact margin Obama needs to get reelected.

There seem to be many more posts bashing and hating Romney, than posts advocating defeating Obama. A sad state of affairs, the conservatives might be the ones who tilt the scale to Obama.

Even in this thread, you can see people expressing preference for an Obama win.

Just look at DoughtyOne’s post (#12):

“At this point the earliest chance we have to install a Conservative is January 2017, and we all know that isn’t going to happen unless Romney does lose now.”

That’s what I thought. You’ve got nothin.

All you could do is tell us Obama is Satan.

Sorry, I don’t give a damn if he is Satan, I’m not voting for Satan’s first lieutenant. Just get that out of your mind right now.

We said the same thing when Clinton was in office. And then we had eight years of Republican bloat and got nowhere. Oh wait, we got a Supreme Court Chief Justice that knew how to toss a ruling on Obamacare to Barack Obama.

When it comes time for me to die, I want to die quickly, not by a thousand cuts.

If the Republican party is going to collude with the Democrats, then it’s best to let Obama take the nation down, and then we can get on with rebuilding.

F BO. F MR. F the GOPe.

You’re whizzing into the wind here.

The thing that makes me afraid the most is that Cloward - Piven is strong with Obama.

The economy collapsing to the point where a re-elected Obama can rebuild on a soft Marxist infrastructure frightens me to death.

YMMV

You have nothing to add here. All you can tell us, is that Obama is terrible.

Nevermind that Romney is terrible. It only matters if the (D) is terrible. Who cares if the (R) is terrible too. You’re nuts!

That worked for me for over twenty years since Reagan. No more!

Sure Obama is a prick. We talk about it every damned day. And until six months ago, we talked about another prick. Well guess what, he’s your knight in shining armor now. Well, he’s not mine. Go back to your supervisor at the RNC and tell them I said to F O.

Listen long and hard. In the spring of 2016, listen to those of us who say we aren’t going to vote for a Leftist anymore. Unlike 2012, you better damn well believe us.

Mitt appointed the vast majority of his judges, as Leftists. What makes you think he’s going Conservative with his picks for the SCOTUS? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Throw away your principles if you like, but don’t expect everyone else to do the same and support your pathetic candidate.

That’s what you folks say every four years. Guys, it’s over. Stick a fork in it. That scare tactic is dead. Bury the damned thing and put a pretty marker on it.

We get a puddin brain that well tell you is going to screw us over, and then he does just what we said by handing off a nation in full meltdown.

And now you’re asking us to approve of one that is even worse going in, and you have to audacity to tell us the other team may destroy the nation. But for the grace of God, George Bush didn’t destroy the nation.

What part of that are you missing?

NO MORE RINO LEFTISTS! THEN END! IT’S OVER!

You HAVE TO come to grips with this.

I truest NO politicians - neither party and neither should you! It is up to the people to persuade those in office to do the right thing. That does mean that it matters little who we elect (yes, they all seem corrupt and probably are at some point), but if left up to the people, we can and will transform them!

Therefore, when the far left is pushing the buttons and getting results, you ought to revolt and bring in others that can be pushed in another direction - NOT give up and let things go to hell in a hand basket!

So... get off you high horse and get with the program! We have to do what is necessary to prevent the country from becoming a Socialist republic. If that does not bother you, then you should not be voting anyway!

If I sound mad, It is because of silly people like you!

FDR’s policies prolonged Depression by 7 years, UCLA economists calculate

http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/FDR-s-Policies-Prolonged-Depression-5409.aspx

Two UCLA economists say they have figured out why the Great Depression dragged on for almost 15 years, and they blame a suspect previously thought to be beyond reproach: President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After scrutinizing Roosevelt’s record for four years, Harold L. Cole and Lee E. Ohanian conclude in a new study that New Deal policies signed into law 71 years ago thwarted economic recovery for seven long years.

“Why the Great Depression lasted so long has always been a great mystery, and because we never really knew the reason, we have always worried whether we would have another 10- to 15-year economic slump,” said Ohanian, vice chair of UCLA’s Department of Economics. “We found that a relapse isn’t likely unless lawmakers gum up a recovery with ill-conceived stimulus policies.”

“The fact that the Depression dragged on for years convinced generations of economists and policy-makers that capitalism could not be trusted to recover from depressions and that significant government intervention was required to achieve good outcomes,” Cole said. “Ironically, our work shows that the recovery would have been very rapid had the government not intervened.”

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

I gave up on Bush, too, to the point where I left the party in 2007. However, Bush tried at least 18 times during his two terms to get the attention of the Congress to reform those two entities.

Barney Frank, et al said that they were doing a good job! Right up until six weeks before the housing collapse, and less than three months before the election.

It’s almost like it was planned. /s

Are you aware that Medicare Part D was passed with a Republican majority in the House and the Senate?

Romney himself says he needs to strike down Obamacare so he can replace it.

Am I telling you things you don’t know here?

You know as well as I do, that Bush nearly destroyed this nation. He had six years to fix the problems with the lending industry, with Republican majority rule. Did he?

What am I missing here? Is it okay if our side is the one that destroys the nation? That’s exactly what we nearly had happen. We’re on shaky ground right now. I’m not buying that rot any longer.

Neither should you.
