Michael Tomasky on the (Possible) Coming Obama Landslide
The Daily Beast ^ | Aug 4, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Liberals don't want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney's path to victory is getting harder every day.

There's a secret lurking behind everything you're reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you've never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn't really up for grabs. Romney's paths to 270 are few.

I am fully cognizant of open primaries and the havoc they cause. But...

You already had it right. There is no but.

Quit trying to make excuses. The GOPe needs to take a leadership role against this. Sometimes the rank and file cannot do things on their own. What's the point of being a member of a group who won't lift a finger to help you?

When open primaries showed up on the ballot in California, neither the state Republican leadership or the national leadership uttered a word or lifted a finger. Don't you think the GOPe has a vested interest in this? Not a peep!

We had the whole Left thinking it was a swell idea, and a lot of Republicans wondering, because there wasn't so much as a hint that the party leadership saw anything wrong with it.

I think you can press yourself and give me a better adult response than that. When you do, I’ll respond.

You may be proven right. I don’t think it’s as bad as you do. If it turns out Romney doesn’t get the votes, what do you think the reason would be? Lousy candidate? Changing electorate? The fact that he has operated as so much of a statist Leftist in the past?

My take would be the third.

We will see. I expect to see him win by a wide margin.

Let’s see, he has supported abortion, passed his own version of government health care, and sat on a platform with a smiling Ted Kennedy and a bunch of other crusty die-hard Democrats looking over his shoulder as he signed that bill.

He governed as a Lefty, and has never governed as anything else.

So you get upset that I tell it like it is, and tell me I’m the one who belongs on D. U., because I won’t support him.

LOL

Please open your own eyes, and take a look at what Romney governed like as a governor.

Romneycare...
Supported abortion...
Appointed Liberal judges (the vast majority)...

What the hell is wrong with you folks.

Did Jim sell the forum to D. U. without telling me?

This guy is a full blown Democrat(R).

Oh maybe I got that wrong.

He’s just a Republican(D).

NO!

No, you read wrong - your mypopia is evident.

What I posted was that our chance to do something about the quality of our nominee has passed. The primary is over and you failed to get a decent candidate nominated. So quit yer bitchin’ and get our nominee elected because he is waaaay less bad than 0bama. Way.

You responded to my post by not addressing the issue WHATSOEVER. Yes, that’s a leftist approach.

The issue is that you did not do what was necessary to get a better nominee and now you’re whining and bitching about it. Well, sux to be you. It’s your fault. Cut your losses and avoid an 0bama 2nd term, its supreme court appointments, its unilateral disarmament, its job killing, marxist policies, its war on small business, its growth of fed government, its marxist executive orders, and its unbounded spending.

We’re not idiots - there are differences between 0bama and our nominee. Go whine and cry in the back yard, get over it, and get our nominee elected. Then, to avoid the problem next time, do better in the primary.

Is it too much to ask for the GOPe to start supporting Conservative candidates?

Is it too much to ask to have them send out talking heads that don’t support McCain or Romney type candidates?

Is it too much to ask to have them support Conservative candidates instead?

How about them sending out talking heads that actually hawk Conservative values like Reagan did?

Is it too much to ask them to support decent legislation and quite trying to foist off more big government programs, or make illegal and criminal aliens among us legal residents, headed toward citizenship?

How about sending out leaders who inform state party leaders and members that open primaries are hurting us, and that the state membership should work to get those abolished, or a the very least make a lot of noise when these ballots come up in new states?

How about the GOPe starting a movement to get all open primaries abolished?

Do you see any of that now?

The answer is no.

That would at minimum, be the places I’d start.

Fine! Vote for some third party....you might get them up to 6% and cause Romney to lose. That would be success in mind...right!!!

That sounds pretty good until you think of the dead people on Weaver’s farm, the dead people at Waco, the dead border agent, and folks who have to fly these days. And now drones are flying over our nation, and we have a division of our military assigned to operate on U. S. soil.

Is this evidence of Conservative presidents working their magic, or evidence of Leftist presidents working theirs?

We simply cannot continue to elect Leftists from the Republican party.

Oh that’s such a powerful argument... /s

He supports government health care...
He appointed mostly Leftist judges...
He supported abortion...

I call him on it, and you want me to go to D. U. so you can support him in peace.

Do I have that about right? No. I got it exactly right and you know it.

Polls are worthless before Labor Day, and weak until October. Nobody's leading jack right now.

That said, this article is campaign obvious. Certain states decide the election. Gore and Kerry had to try and run the table in 2000/2004 (nearly did). McCain had one path to win and choked. Either Obama or Romney will have to run the table this year depending how things look.

“Rain

“I’d feel better if WE ALL UNITE to support Mitt Romney”.

Ditto.

Were you reading over at the Free Republic, also, this morning? It was near enough to drive me to drink!

As it is I’m left thoroughly amazed by the reasoning of some who think it would be best to sit this one out or vote for Obama again, allowing him to completely destroy what’s left of this once great Republic so that come 2016, it might be rebuilt again.

The mere thought of that shakes me to the marrow, believing as I do that Obama would not only be President for another 4 more years, but KING, or at least a lifelong Dictator who’d obliterate any chance we had of voting him out of office at any point in the future. If that were to happen what would our children, our future generations, ever know about what it was to live free?”

We are tearing each other to shreds. People are noticing.

the writer of this piece is a proud Red Diaper baby

who writes for Newsweek, Daily Beast, and The Guardian

why does anyone here care what he says?

if Obama wins there will be time to gloat then

if Romney wins there will be plenty of time to bitch about him the next 4 years too

there will likely be less to bitch about than if Obama wins

but it will sting more

like Bush

Did you give any thought to what happens if Obama is reelected?

I think Americans would be forced to fight for their freedom or surrender. Might be the best thing to ever happen to us.

Whereas with Romney, our freedom would continue to be stolen silently while we barely paid attention.

The GOPe is as progressive as the democrat party and will take us to the same big government tyranny the democrats will, but the rinos still understand how money works, so it won't be quite as painful with Romney as it would be with obama.

They both jumped the shark with their two party, progressive war against the Constitution and we, the people. It's time for something new.

The progressives, be they democrat or GOPe rino, are NOT the answer, but the pain they cause might lead us to it.

And so, here we are...doing the same thing over and over again, while ignoring the feedback and expecting a different result.

That's the reality behind your Romney sales pitch. We're either admiring the view from the slippery slope or skiing to the bottom.

You're right about polls but it is a slight edge for Obama whereas McCain had a slight edge this time in 2008.

and even though I do actually think polls are more often accurate than not I am noticing that most polls are weighing their polls per 2008 Democrat averages which are 9-15 points more sampling for Dems than GOP

in 2010 GOP out sampled Dems turnout wise

hence I don't see current sampling as accurate but rather tilting at least 4 points Democrat based on record Dem tunrout which given 2010 ain't gonna happen

black man has already run once...

samplings will likely tighten up by late September as will the polls baring a gaffe

Obama stays under 50 percent everywhere and for an incumbent he is low in polls...too tight in the aggregate

all 3 losers in the past 40 years seeking a second term were under 50%..Carter...Ford...GHW Bush

however...Romney is so far proving to be a poor candidate

playing it safe loses races...and the media has succeeded framing him as a rich out of touch guy

but most folks right of center absolutely loathe Obama and will hold their noses

I see Romney winning by 3-4% in a tight electoral race given the left and minorities control so much urban blue turf

it will be based on high turnout by angry white self identified Christian voters

the CFA brigade was a harbinger
